#Buying used 7900xtx. What to look out for?

I decided that its a good time to update my GPU. After considering lots of things, i decided to get 7900xtx.
My options are to either get a new one from retail for 1300$, or used one for 850-1000$.

As with any second hand hardware, i will be testing it at the seller's place before buying it.
But its not like we can sit there all day running benchmarks, so what tests are the quick surefire way to see if theres something wrong with the card?
What temps should i be seeing for 7900xtx?
Anything i should watch out for?

3dmark for benchmarking and furmark for stress testing are my go to

thanks

its "bought half a year ago" 7900 xtx asrock phantom gaming oc

gusty quiver
#

and i see conflicting info on what PSU i would need

#

as some posts on reddit say that 750-850W is enough (my PSU is 850)

#

but the retailers recommend a 1000W one

#

(my cpu is 7600X, so not the most power hungry one)

But it'll be fixed by replacing the thermal paste

ik, out of options available at the time this one was the best according to the spreadsheet

It's a stress test

Ain't no one using it for that

Right right

gusty quiver

nah id look at furmark to see that it hits the promised clocks and see the temps under load

yep

#

just wish it was easier to find what to compare the numbers with

gusty quiver
#

ig i will try occt

#

am kinda worried now, since ill be also bringing my GPU for tradein

#

what if there are issues with my gpu found during testing

#

cant even test it now cuz already removed both card and drivers, and will drive with it there right after work😔

#

worst case im just not gonna tradein ig and keep it for my home server

never serviced

#

bought it second hand in 2022 i think and it was in my pc since

Alot of people sold XTXs in the UK second hand. Nothing wrong with them, they panic bought and realised they never really fully utilised the GPU so cashed in and down sized. Imagine its the same elsewhere

gusty quiver
#

lots of people downsizing doesnt always mean this particular one isnt a bad actor

quick gate
#

Most people not utilising it fully, unlikely to get something that’s gone bad or wrong. An XTx atleast in the Uk, never heard of someone buying faulty.

#

well i bought it

#

didnt sit through entire hour of occt

#

but first 10 minutes looked good enough

#

not sure if 102C hotspot after continuous max load is good or bad

#

unlikely to ever reach that during my normal use

#

but i might just undervolt it or set some limits instead so it doesnt reach so high

quick gate
#

XTX does run hot yes. Around 100c isn’t unusual on hotspot

coarse jackal
quick gate
#

That’s gre . Not an XTX.

#

That’s like me telling him my hotspot on my 7800xt at 100% gpu utilisation with RT is 84c. It’s not the same card.

#

100c is normal for the XTX hotspot. it’s running close to its power limit as a card.

after some testing at home, the fan noise is uneven

#

so slightly annoying under load

#

couldnt find a separate control for fans in amd's app

#

will check out if asrock has anything today after work

gusty quiver

im debating if i want to do fan replacement or just straight up remove shroud and slap some 120mm fans there

gusty quiver
#

until then just thoughts and research

just excessive risk

#

and in general its easier to resell the card later if it has all the stickers in place

# coarse jackal FanControl work for my gpu

used that to manually change fan speeds.
result:
annoying noise starts after 35% and becomes almost indistinguishable after 80%

the noise itself leads me to believe that one of the fans might be off balance, as instead of a consistent humm its more like a repeating pattern, which speeds up with increased rpm

gusty quiver
#

yeah i feel like that requires replacement

#

cant seem to find the right fans on aliexpress though😔
