#Cloned SSD to larger, cleared old drive, restarted computer and it blue screens on startup

And now I installed fresh windows on my old ssd, and it chooses to only boot into that one. The bios doesn’t even put my old drive in the order so I don’t know how to switch back to my new ssd to boot.

#

The very first time I told it to boot to the new Samsung ssd it did (or maybe it didn’t, even though it said it would). Then I used cmd to clear my old drive while windows was on. Everything still looked normal all my files and everything were still present, but when I restarted the computer because I updated a sound device, it refused to boot and gave a blue screen error until I reinstalled windows on the old drive

#

So how the heck do I get it to boot to the new drive with my old system data in it?

You likely will have to do some work in command line to fix this if its anything like what I have seen before. Get a new media loaded on the old ssd or onto a thumb drive, access the "repair your computer" button

#

I would start with repairing the boot loader,
run
diskpart
list disk
send the resulting info in a photo. What we are looking for is if this drive is MBR or GPT

#

If you need any info on how to setup the bootable usb, or access the command prompt, you can mention me and I can be right with you

Right now a new issue is that it won’t boot to the new drive since I installed windows on the old one. Should I start by removing the old ssd from my computer completely to force it to use my new one again?

#

And I even have it in bios to prioritize booting to the new one, the temp windows (old ssd) doesn’t even show up in boot priority and it does that

#

Also for reference, this is the tutorial I used step by step for cloning it https://youtu.be/uE9xMNidGEo?si=za4FTxYfH4MWm-DR

This video shows you step by step how to clone an NVMe SSD to another NVMe SSD, this exact same method also works if you are cloning a SATA SSD or HDD to an NVMe SSD, also re-activation of Windows or Office isn't required because the hardware is the same.

Except I used my second m.2 slot instead of an external, and it’s a desktop instead of laptop

#

And they didn’t show prioritizing in bios, but I did that to the new one before cleaning the old ssd

If you think the old one isn't helping, you can remove it.

Do you potentially recall what the bluescreen stop code was?

I know it ended with e, but I can try looking it up

Yeah that's no good

#

I'm going to do some quick research to better understand the topic, but I still think the way I was explaining earlier is the only way to do it

Ok I’ll get to work on removing the old ssd, otherwise I don’t know how to boot it back to the Samsung when it’s already apparently priority in bios

#

Before I take it out, should I use the temp windows to update the Samsung drivers with Samsung magician?

It’s disk 1 on here

#

Disk 0 is my internal hard drive

I'm really sorry, fell asleep. That's what I get for trying to work at midnight.
I read some support articles, and I'm fairly sure my way of going about it is one of few to fix it.
I'll list out the commands needed when I get a free moment

It’s okay, I went to sleep too and I’ll probably still head back to sleep for a bit. If you can send those whenever you have time for, it’s highly appreciated 😁

bcdboot C:\Windows /s C: /f UEFI

#

give this command a go

#

change C: to whichever is your new drive

#

look for the letter "ltr" that matches the drive you need

past solstice
#

Okay I'll try that

#

Sorry I didn't see that yesterday, I've gotten a bunch of my stuff on the temporary windows 11 so I can at least do what I do daily. Though restoring is still the goal because it's my new drive lol

Just to confirm, this all in one line? "bcdboot C:\Windows /s C: /f UEFI"

torpid lodge
#

Yes

#

Just make sure the windows path is correct

#

Which should just be the intended drive letter

past solstice
#

Okay I'll do that now. If I need to revert it, do I just do the same thing but to the C drive?

past solstice
#

It still just boots to my old one (at least rn with it inside my second slot) and each time I choose to boot to Samsung ssd it just boots to WD ssd. And there isn’t even an option for WD ssd

#

Nevermind it worked!

#

But they are both named “Samsung” in the boot menu

past solstice
#

Okay I got it to boot to the correct one, do I clear the WD one finally?

torpid lodge
#

I do know you said you had everything you needed off of it, but its always safe to double check before wiping it

past solstice
#

It’s okay lol you are free to do things other than respond right away lol

past solstice
#

I think when I deleted all my downloads to the recycling bin from it there was a minuscule thing I had saved but I could literally do that again in 20 minutes

torpid lodge
past solstice

But it made me think to double check anywhere else too lol

Thank you again for your help, I haven’t dealt with a lot of command prompt problems so I was at my end for what simple options I could troubleshoot

Hey, I have a new problem occcuring and I’m not sure if you might be able to answer/help me

#

As of last night, my computer has been doing something strange

#

I’ve been keeping obs on to livestream my 3D printing progress, and for the first day and second it was completely fine, but last night the stream ended abruptly and when I woke up, my rgb was at their default colors, the monitors wouldn’t display anything even after turning on and moving mouse, the pc wouldn’t go into sleep mode from pressing power button, and I had to hard reset the computer

#

And then everything was working again

#

Until it wasn’t and randomly went black again, and the rgb’s went to default, my obs stopped streaming, and I had to hard reset

#

And while I initially thought it might be the graphics card due to the display thing, I got to thinking about how the graphics card wouldn’t cause all the other things

Hey @past solstice, sorry I didn't see this earlier. Look into event viewer and see if there's any critical errors
