#CPU upgrade, no POST

Evening everybody.

So I’ve been stuck with an issue for some time now. I am willing to pay GOOD money for some help.

Last month I bought the RYZEN 7 9800X3D, when I installed it, I had no post. I did everything, absolutely everything. I installed the correct BIOS update, switched ram slots all of it. Everything.

I sent the CPU back thinking it was a DOA CPU, and now I’ve received my replacement. It still doesn’t POST. I have done and tried everything. Please someone, for the love of God help me.

Specs: RTX 4070 Super
RYZEN 7700X (previous CPU)
32GB RAM
1000W PSU Corsair I believe it was.

what is your exact mobo and what bios do you have installed?

idle pasture
#

Very latest, forgot the name. I can fetch it for you if you wanna.

#

Three updates ago, they added support for the 9000 series.

hybrid pilot
#

this is possibly something you could try doing (if you havent already)

idle pasture
#

I just relaunched my PC for the first time after re putting my original CPU back in.

I got this opening BIOS. What does it means

#

Mean?*

hybrid pilot
#

i think its just reset bios options, so you may need to turn on amd expo and rebar

idle pasture
#

I see that I have a Q Flash option for when I wanna update my BIOS.

#

I’m unsure if there’s anything physical on my motherboard I can press, if that’s what you’re referring to.

#

F32f. That’s the latest version.

hybrid pilot
idle pasture
#

Oh, wait timeout. When you say the back, do you mean the right side of the PC or immediately in the back where my HDMI goes in?

hybrid pilot
#

here on the back of the PC, not the back of the motherboard

#

sorry, shouldve made it more clear

idle pasture
hybrid pilot
idle pasture
#

I see a small circled “Q Flash Plus” button!

hybrid pilot
#

yep, thats the one

idle pasture
#

Wonderful.

When it is appropriate for me to press that?

#

When it’s not booted, in bios or with the new CPU installed?

#

You say jump, I ask how high. Take all the time you need, and thank you again!

#

Oh my God, I must be a total idiot. You’ve already told me.

I gotta install the new update again on a USB, plug it in, rename and then press it?

hybrid pilot
#

i was typing out the instructions but this may be a better help for you

hybrid pilot
idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

Alrighty, not saying that this will work but it is something to try

idle pasture
#

This one I haven’t tried before though, so fingers crossed.

hybrid pilot
idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

alright, lemme know how it goes, and remember (if you already haven't) to format the USB and rename the file

idle pasture
#

Alright.

And we’ve begun..

idle pasture
#

Should be doing its magic.

#

Heard the guy say it can take 15 minutes.

hybrid pilot
#

Yeah, you don’t have the CPU in right? Just the cooler on top

idle pasture
idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

Oh, no it should still work with the CPU, it just can work without it

idle pasture
#

God, this is gut wrenching..

hybrid pilot
#

Quick question, what capacity is your USB stick?

idle pasture
#

Or, no I believe I grabbed the 15GB one. Sorry, I have two.

#

Yeah, straight up no post still.

hybrid pilot
#

as long as it’s under 32GB, FAT32 will work. Possibly try your Old CPU again and see if the update actually happened

idle pasture
#

Alright! Here goes, let me re install the other CPU

hybrid pilot
#

Yeah, sorry if this is a pain - but it at least makes sure that everything is still working

idle pasture
#

Alright let me turn off the PC and reinstall the part

hybrid pilot
#

Alright

idle pasture
#

It seems to have worked, update wise. I got the boot failure screen too.

hybrid pilot
#

Alright, so it’s still posting with your old CPU but not your new one

idle pasture
#

Great, and now I’m stuck on the screen. Can’t pick an option.

This is a known bug, I forgot the workaround for this.

idle pasture
#

Ah, I remember the workaround.

#

Yup!

F32g is installed

hybrid pilot
#

Is there any damage on the 9800x3D?

idle pasture
#

Hmm…. What could be the reason.

idle pasture
#

I returned the previous one because I was getting the same response. I highly, highly doubt they sent me a DOA twice.

#

There’s just no shot. I cannot believe that.

#

Is it dangerous to clean out the firmware from the BIOS somehow and reinstall through Q Plus?

#

Nah.. But that doesn’t make sense either.

#

The BIOS update is there, CPU is in healthy condition.. Lord.

hybrid pilot
#

I don’t think it’s BIOS, if it’s updated and your old CPU is still working, there shouldn’t be an issue

idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

I’ll be honest, it is really strange that it still isn’t working. I’m looking into some other threads I’ve found of people having the same issue, I’ll see if I can find another potential fix there

idle pasture
#

And I’ll reciprocate the honesty, I’m willing to bet it’s something super minute that’s just hindering it from posting. This is always what happens.

hybrid pilot
#

How long did you leave the CMOS battery out?

idle pasture
#

15 minutes.

hybrid pilot
#

Especially if you’ve moved the RAM around too

idle pasture
#

Yeah, I highly doubt it.

I’ve left the PC on for more than 30 minutes previously. Didn’t post.

Then I left the PC running all night. Woke up next morning and it still wasn’t posting.

#

All of this didn’t happen today of course.

#

You ever encountered something like this before?

hybrid pilot
#

Personally never upgraded a CPU - i'm still on my first. I have seen people have an issue where the CPU won't boot, but it is usually fixed with a BIOS update

#

its just strange that the new one still doesnt work

idle pasture
#

Oh, well there you go.

Yeah, you hear a lot about boot fails when installing new CPU's but I've never seen alike this magnitude.

hybrid pilot
#

in your bios do you have AMD expo turned on by any chance?

idle pasture
#

I think it might be, but let me make sure for ya.

hybrid pilot
#

alright. I've found something with a fix where someone had the same issue as you where it ended up being the ram stick

idle pasture
#

Sure thing. What would you like for me to do with the Ram?

#

It’s a bulk ram, let it be noted.

hybrid pilot
#

the step-by-step that i've found says:

#
  1. Remove RAM and CPU, then install new CPU
  2. Remove CMOS battery for 10 minutes, then put back in
  3. Install the RAM stick into the 2nd slot across
idle pasture
#

OH MY GOD NOT THE CMOS AGAIN 😭

#

I’m finna have to remove the GPU fo dat one 😭

hybrid pilot
#

ill be honest, i don't think it is the CMOS in this case

#

since youve done it once

idle pasture
idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

do you know what ram stick it is that you have?

idle pasture
#

Ya

hybrid pilot
#

nevermind, its teamgroup 32GB 6400

#

got it

idle pasture
#

Yup!

#

Alright so, remove the ram and CPU, then reinstall the new one again and this time in 2nd slot?

hybrid pilot
# idle pasture

yeah, but first possibly boot into BIOS, turn off ddr5 auto booster, then try the new CPU

idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

I know AM5 was a bit (or may still be) iffy with DDR5, so possibly having that on with a new CPU could cause potential issues

idle pasture
#

Wait.. So I basically just relocate the ram to the 2nd slot already from now, reinstall the CPU and boot?

hybrid pilot
#

yeah, make sure pc is properly powered off with electricity discharged, Install the 9800x3D, move the RAM to the second slot along. Also worth plugging your display cable straight into your motherboard and seeing if that helps

idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

alright, let me know if it works or not

idle pasture
#

You got it partner. BRB

#

Alright! Moment of truth o

#

Let me plug the DP to the motherboard

#

OH MY GOD!!!

#

OH MY FUCKING GOD

hybrid pilot
#

I’m guessing it worked?

idle pasture
#

IT ACTUALLY POSTED!

hybrid pilot
#

Great. Make sure you can boot into windows

idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

If you can, it may be that the DDR5 auto booster or the RAM could’ve been the problem

idle pasture
#

It booted fully!

hybrid pilot
#

Open task manager and see what speed your RAM is running at

idle pasture
#

Here ya go!

#

I ran my RAM cleaner, it's up to 25GB of availability.

hybrid pilot
#

Looks like your RAM is running at max speed, so no more issue there

#

Don’t forget to change back to your GPU output if you haven’t already

idle pasture
#

Is there anything you'd like for me to do in BIOS?

#

In regards to CPU profiles?

hybrid pilot
idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

I’m pretty sure there should be a default profile you can use

idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

Can you send a pic?

idle pasture
hybrid pilot
# idle pasture

Oh if you mean here, that’s just showing that it’s set to disabled. You can press on it and some profiles should show up

idle pasture
#

All I can see is disabled.

hybrid pilot
#

strange, do you mind if i can see a pic of the whole BIOS screen?

idle pasture
hybrid pilot
#

are you able to toggle the settings under where it says AMD expo? im presuimg not

idle pasture
#

Yeah, I can’t.

hybrid pilot
#

its not much of a problem - its possible that it doesn't work on that board using single channel. Other than that though, i would say turn on X3D turbo mode and you're all set

idle pasture
#

All good man, I’m beat anyways. This help was more than enough!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🌹

hybrid pilot
#

no problem whatsoever! have fun with your now working 9800x3D
