#Upgrading rig in 2025 (~£900 budget), looking for advice on my current plan.

Happy holidays. I've been saving up my moolah for the last couple of months to do a major overhaul of my rig. My i7-9700k is starting to show its age (and possibly some degradation due to overclocking) and I'm looking to upgrade my CPU. Obviously, this also entails changing the Motherboard and RAM due to the new sockets and standards. It is primarily going to be used for gaming (examples include Cyberpunk 2077, Heavily modified Creation Engine games, heavily modified Stellaris, heavily modified MineCraft, etc), but also some work within Blender, Photoshop, and compilation of code for BYOND applications - all outputted onto a 1440p ultrawide monitor and 3 1080p side monitors.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/WkCL9C

This list is my current plan for the upgrade, which is budgeted at around £900 (£650 in cash ATM, the rest through credit) and I cannot really stretch this much futher (think maybe £30 max). Anything marked as already purchased is being recycled from my current build. Not included in the list and budget is £25 for both thermal paste and new brackets to allow the cooler to be mounted correctly. However I wanted to consult you all on a couple of points - mainly the PSU.

  • Is a 650w PSU suitable for this kind of build, or would it be prudent to downgrade my RAM and Motherboard selection to buy a more powerful unit?
  • Can this specific PSU (Riotoro Enigma G2 650W 80+ Gold) actually support 2 EPS (8-Pin) connections? I've got conflicting information on this - PCPartPicker seems to think so, but the manufacturer only supplied me with 1 EPS cable - their documentation doesn't specify a limit. The model's sockets are also identical to the 750w version, which was supplied with 2 EPS cables.
  • Assuming the Riotoro PSU is still good for this build, do I need to splash out for the X870E Motherboard, or would you recommend a cheaper X870 board? I'm open to suggestions on a specific one.

when in 2025 are you planning on this upgrade?

  1. Depends on the unit. Factors like quality and age should also be considered. Your PSU is based off a seasonic focus gold platform so it's a decent performer for the most part, aside from problems with high end GPUs before an early 2018 revision. I recommend you downgrade your Motherboard to something with a more reasonable chipset/feature set you'll take advantage of, so you can get a more fitting PSU though.

  2. No, the 650W variant only has 1 8-pin EPS connector. You'll be fine if you DO use it, as your CPU isn't a super-high power draw CPU.

  3. Don't spend money where you don't need it. What are you doing that requires/warrants an X-series board?

for the cpu alone you wont need an upgrade

#

but if u plan to ugprade ur gpu in the future to any higher end model to pair wiith that 9800x3d, the 650W psu definetely wont cut it

#

and i still wouldnt do any overclocking on the 650w psu u got rn

If they were purely doing 1440p gaming, I would agree with saving some money and hitting up the 7800x3D. However, they're also doing productivity.

# dusky skiff o no, where did you find that 10%?

I should have probably put a probably before that 10%, shouldn't I? I'm basing this assumption on personal observations on how my PC performed in Cyberpunk on 1440p Ultrawide (GPU was constantly maxing at only ~80% while the CPU was at 100%), as well as online discussion regarding similar or identical pairings (R/buildapc, the LTT forums, etc.)

Keep in mind the 9700k is also having to use integrated graphics to run my 3 side monitors with 1 running video concurrently.

9700k is starting to show its age

I got mine in December 2018 when they where new.

#

It was overclocked to 5.3 GHz, which I understand is a win in the silicon lottery for the time.

#

But now it'll only manage 5 GHz. Anything more and it'll start to be unstable.

yeh

#

might be able to just swap the motherboard ram and cpu and thats it

#

and way more gaming performance

#

b650 eagle ax, ryzen 7 7700x or 7600 with 32GB 2x16 6000MT cl30 ram.

I'm insistent on the 9800x3d as that'll cover both my gaming and productivity needs, not to mention longer lifespan, so maybe the x870 eagle board?

#

It'd free up £75 for the new PSU.

the cheapest am5 motherboard (with good VRM cooling) and the most expensive has zero performance difference

Fair. Okay. Any recommendations on the PSU?

Ah, was looking at this last night.

yeah

There is a 750w option for £80.

dusky skiff

tbh i would just go for the 100euro one

Okay.

List is updated.

how are you getting that cpu for 500

lucid flume

AWD-IT. But I can stretch to £520 for other retailers. if needed.

do you NEED 64GB of ram?

dusky skiff

why do you NEED X670 not b?

no

also a 9800X3D uses like 90w when gaming

I saw JayTwoCentz' overclocking video for the 9800x3d and he had a TDP of 120w.
