#New gaming laptop randomly (but rarely) freezes and restarts a few seconds after that.

Should I be concerned? Anything I should look into? Anything I'm doing wrong?

Here are the specs:
HP Victus 15-fb1000ca Gaming Laptop
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7535HS
RAM: 16GB
SSD: 1TB
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2050
Screen: 1080p, 144hz
OS: Windows 11 24H2
Battery: 52.5Wh
Charger: 150W

This also seems to only happen under very specific conditions. Like I'm in a specific room and I'm on battery and I'm using all the power-saving modes built into my PC. This is very weird.

#

It's also showing up as Kernel Event 41 in Event Viewer, if that's any help

lemme check

Are you running Windows 11?

#

Scratch that you are

crude dust
#

It seems to be a memory issue, plugging this code into google

hollow carbon
#

@crude dust So, it's actually bluescreening. That you don't see the BSOD suggests a GPU issue. For some reason Event Viewer shows the BSOD code in decimal so I have to convert it, sec

That is in many cases a windows 11 bug recently. The only thing I managed to fix it with was reinstall to windows 10

crude dust
#

thing is

#

this device came with windows 11

hollow carbon
#

307 is 0x133 which is DPC_Watchdog_Violation. Which can be any driver.

crude dust
#

is it a hardware issue?

#

i still have warranty

hollow carbon
#

It can be

#

Let's check the dump files.

crude dust
#

it only does this like once a week

#

how do i get that?

hollow carbon
#

Go to C:\Windows\Minidump and check if you have any minidump files. If you do, go back to the Windows folder and copy the Minidump folder itself to the Downloads folder (You can use the desktop if you don't have OneDrive syncing files). Zip the copied folder and attach it to a post. Please follow the instructions to the letter as Windows doesn't like you messing with files in this location.

If it's only shutting down like that when you play graphics intensive games and points to a driver issue than it's windows 11 ducking you up.

Missed that

crude dust
#

minidump doesn't exist

hollow carbon
#

Well, at least low power modes. Not necessarily idle.

crude dust
#

hold on i need to leave the room + my battery is low i'll figure this out in an hour

hollow carbon
#

@crude dust Are you using any encryption, like BitLocker?

crude dust
#

isn't that not on windows 11 home?

crude dust
#

iirc this is a thing being enforced in w11 24h2

hollow carbon
#

You can't encrypt the OS on home, but it initially dumps the data to the page file which can be on any partition.

#

The page file is usually on C:, but it's sometimes on a random disk.

#

Unless they changed it, I give so few fucks about Win11 I have no idea what they have changed in the last four years.

#

The encryption ↑

crude dust
#

oh yeah one weird thing that happened

#

with the most recent instance of this happening, my computer decided to install an update real quick during the reboot

hollow carbon
#

I mean, Windows installing updates isn't really in the weird category.

crude dust
#

i think it may be a malicious program I have installed

#

I'll try to scan with bitdefender when I'm home and report back to you

hollow carbon
#

99.9% of malware these days are keyloggers and ransomware. They very rarely cause issues. If they cause issues, they are detected. Then they can't steal your stuff anymore.

crude dust
#

I'll also try to use windows repair in place tool that was introduced in 24h2

hollow carbon
#

By issues I mean crashes and performance problems.

crude dust
#

which reinstalls windows but keeps all ur files and apps and stuff

hollow carbon
#

I haven't looked at the new one, but I have hated all the previous ones MS have done that do this.

#

They just weren't reliable enough.

crude dust
#

It seems the most common culprit of this is usually an NVIDIA driver

#

should I use DDU?

#

full disclosure, I do use GeForce Experience for my NVIDIA card

#

in terms of drivers, I use the Studio drivers to make sure things are stable

#

Especially since I don't really play the latest games

crude dust
#

it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue

#

when I'm plugged in, I can run something that's way too intense for my computer and it'll freeze for a little bit but it will recover

#

it ONLY happens on battery

#

and only when it's in the bottom half of percentages

#

this seems to either be an OS issue or Driver issue

crude dust
#

re-installing the display driver seems to have addressed my concerns for now

#

i'll report back if something happens again
