Any recommendations for a laptop for education purposes, no specialised software needed, just standard word processing apps.

$500 maximum

I have some ideas but want to see the general consensus first

I think she would benefit from something that has swappable ram.

16gb minimum for ram

SSD minimum 256gb

Everything else I'm pretty open for suggestions

try too look at used laptops as you can get them for a pretty low price for pretty ok laptops but the battery might not be their

I want to go through first party for her so she has a warranty. She also gets students discounts for a lot of vendors

I'm horrid when it comes to Ryzen lol. I can follow Intel's naming scheme but Ryzen I'm lost completely

also if you see one of the 7XXX cpues look for a cpu with 7/8X4XX if the one after 7 or 8 says 4 it means its running zen2 thats way slower

while on intel you only know you getting a intel cpu, how much power (i dono) and such so ye ryzen is a bit better in that regard

Yeah my current laptop is a i5 8th gen. Good enough for when I was at uni and what I occasionally use it for atm

She's asked if it can be from bestbuy or Walmart as it's quick to get as shes in a rush. No Newegg or micro centre near by

Personally for me no. Idk if she wants it to be new though. When I next catch her I can ask. I don't see why she shouldn't try for a refurb

ryzen 7000 is cool and all that
but if its just boring tasks you dont really need an apu that top modern

I'd recommend a X280 Thinkpad
its couple of years old but you'd pay less than 200 dollars
USB C Charging
HDMI
FHD IPS
12.5 inch so compact as hell
also durable

ive had hundreds of pcs/laptops because i made some money flipping them from 16-20 years old (i am 21)
and after all that, I just know what I need and not need as performance
ive had all types of crazy laptops, from cheap china 50 dollar laptops to old 19 inch laptops to 4k HDR or gaming laptops
I settled with two computers
one efficient gaming pc for all my demanding tasks and one laptop for uni, travelling and the rest
