I accidentally hit my computer a few minutes ago and it hung. I blamed it on the ram, idk. so I rebooted the thing and now it's power cycling? like, the light turns on and fan spins for like 1 second, then turns off again. I unplugged the thing after this happened thrice to not cause any further harm.

  • what could has happened here?
  • is this fixable?
jolly dove
#

tbh I'm too scared to plug the thing back in

kindred kestrel
#

pleas use protection

#

ok i will do the helping, what parts are in the pc and how hard did you hit the pc.
can you send a pic of the pc

bold igloo
#

unplug and re plug cables, same with the gpu and ram

jolly dove
jolly dove
jolly dove
kindred kestrel
#

it might be loose ram

#

so take out the ram and make sure to press down on the clips then replug it into the slot and make sure you push on both ends of the ram and hear the click or see the sides of the ram slot fit proporly or just send a pic of it

jolly dove
#

tbh, I should mention that my setup is far from perfect. it's q pretty small case but I wanted to extend it with two drives (they're both hdds, I used to use them before shrug) so I broke the forbidden rule and put one vertically and the other one diagonally. as I said, I'll get back to the system in like 2 mins and then send a pic

bold igloo
jolly dove
#

what's the worst than can happen if it short circuits

#

okay. so

#

this is a pretty jank setup, I do have to admit. I was planning to get a new machine either way in the upcoming weeks, by which I will hopefully have solved the drive issue. this case just doesn't have enough room and I don't have any longer cables rn. lemme try remounting the ram rq. I have never actually remounted the gpu, so I might have to follow a guide for that shrug

#

lemme see if I can get a pic with both drives (yes. there's another. it's even weirder positioned)

bold igloo
kindred kestrel
#

btw for most mobos the ram sticks look like they are in the wrong slots

jolly dove
#

wdym? aren't they supposed to be in the same ones color coded

bold igloo
bold igloo
#

did you happen to check to see if the back was bent? and replug cables?

jolly dove
#

I have yet to check the bacj

#

what cables specifically?

jolly dove
kindred kestrel
#

but try and move the ram sticks over 1 slot

bold igloo
#

wherever you hit it, yeah. like i said, it could be in contact with the motherboard and that may be the cause

bold igloo
bold igloo
#

if you know the exact computer model, i can find out for you (if you are that concerned)

jolly dove
#

that is from the drive

#

idk what that is

#

but it is there

kindred kestrel
#

dam

#

just try and take it out and place it back in

#

i have seen improperly mounted ram sticks work but then when shipped fly around the case due to not beeing mounted corectly

jolly dove
kindred kestrel
#

F

jolly dove
#

?

kindred kestrel
#

acer is one of the worst companies to exist when it comes to prebuilds, i searched in the official manual for the pc and their was 0 words about ram

jolly dove
#

lmao great

kindred kestrel
#

its so cheap and shit that the pc might have just committed die

jolly dove
bold igloo
#

thanks for that glimmer of hope bud.

kindred kestrel
#

no problem

#

i have had to deal with one of those before and i only have pure hate for it

bold igloo
#

quite honestly, if you really wanna hardcore test if the computer is working, build it like a test bench. find a small box to place the motherboard on, and take everything out and reassemble on the boc

#

do you get any diagnostic lights or beeping?

kindred kestrel
#

its a oem pc so its a yes

jolly dove
#

no sound or led

kindred kestrel
#

then its a full on short

jolly dove
#

great

kindred kestrel
#

it can be something loose in the psu or if the hit dented the pc a part of the metal in the back of the pc touching somewhere it should not do that

jolly dove
kindred kestrel
#

just send a vid of the issue

jolly dove
#

should I unplug the hdds before I try again? I pretty much store a few projects on there that aren't on any git remote yet, and the other drive is just games (which I could reinstall). the ssd this thing shipped with is just a plain fedora installation, I don't care too much abt that

kindred kestrel
#

ye why not

jolly dove
#

ok, gimme a min

bold igloo
jolly dove
#

what's with the connectors (or cables if any) that stick out of the back

bold igloo
#

what

jolly dove
jolly dove
#

anyways, do I risk this thing even further if I power it on now hmmjj

bold igloo
#

i would suggest not

jolly dove
bold igloo
#

i would take it out, test it on a box, try and see if you can bend or hammer the case away in that one " welded" spot

jolly dove
kindred kestrel
#

btw just upload it to yt then send the link

jolly dove
#

? can't I just send it on discor

#

oh god these screws suck ass

#

gimme a min

#

YES

#

I found one that fits

#

finally

#

(my ltt driver hasn't arrived yet-)

jolly dove
kindred kestrel
#

file size limit

#

most vids are bigger even then 100MB

jolly dove
#

I doubt a quick showcase video will be more than 500

#

isn't the limit 500?

#

since the introduction of basic

kindred kestrel
#

ye for you it is 500MB

#

i am used to 10MB

jolly dove
#

rip

kindred kestrel
#

as i am good at not wasting money

#

i got a 7800X3D and a 7900 XTX with all good parts that i built myself or i can buy nitro

#

pro tip good pc is better then you know a bad gaming experience and other

jolly dove
#

wait holy shit I unscrewed these.. those are for the psu right, how the hell do I unmount the other side panel

#

and yes they did indeed mount the psu upside down

#

(and no I wasn't using the mobo hdmi port)

kindred kestrel
#

or did you place the pc the wrong way

jolly dove
#

whar

#

I doubt I placed the computer upside down

#

given the button's at the top

kindred kestrel
#

nah most OEMs make so many computers that making the same part and using it for way too many computers is better

jolly dove
jolly dove
bold igloo
kindred kestrel
#

just put the mobo on anything that is not mettal

bold igloo
#

one that wont scratch anything

jolly dove
#

hm

kindred kestrel
#

or plastic

bold igloo
#

yep. a block of wood even

#

xD

jolly dove
#

yea I don't think I got a block of wood

bold igloo
#

do you get the point though?

jolly dove
#

in theory the desk next to mine is wood but it's painted(?) black shrug

jolly dove
#

do I just place it on there or what? in theory I could screw it into the box but I doubt I have the fitting screws and the ones that came with the machine are like 1mm longer than they have to be to even fit

bold igloo
#

yeah just grab that cardboard you have and place it on top of that on your desk

jolly dove
#

no like

#

do I place the mobo on there loosely

bold igloo
#

then put in the RAM, the cables, at least the C drive, the PSU

bold igloo
jolly dove
#

aight sure

#

ok gimme like 5 mins

jolly dove
#

seems like the psu is also screwed in from the top or sth

#

but I can't rly access that cquse that's below the black cover thing

#

which I can't rly unscrew

#

peak right to repair

bold igloo
#

the rivets? they shouldnt interfere you should be able to push it out

#

or keep the PSu in the case and stretch the cables over to the mobo, youll have to have the case right next to it all

jolly dove
#

god I am too stupid to remove the gpu concen

#

I can't tell if it's screwed in on the bottom, I doubt it doe

#

I removed the screws on the back side of the case but this thingy won't come out

kindred kestrel
#

Did you push Inn the thing on the slot

jolly dove
#

I did push on the lock thingy (like with ram), ye

bold igloo
#

have you checked if there is a screw on the GPU bracket?

#

typically there is one that will hold it down to the case

jolly dove
#

rn trying to get the mobo off, which got 2 screws behind the cd drive, which requires me to unscrew it from the front, so I have to get the front cover of, which requires me to get the other side, which requires me to somehow crack those weird sprayed over screws open.... what the fuck

jolly dove
#

oh like on the outside/case?

#

yes

#

they forgot to put a screw in, so only two of three were actually in there, but yes

#

woah

#

I managed to open up the front

#

this thing is the largest dust magnet ever

bold igloo
#

yeppppp

#

remember the goal is to test if it will boot and work outside of the case, and see if you can bend the case back so it doesnt touch

jolly dove
jolly dove
#

update: I am so stupid

#

like, I can press the thingy down

#

but it doesn't do anything

#

OH

#

I got it

#

apparently you have to press the thing, pull the psu up, then push it

#

I didn't pull it up first

jolly dove
#

@bold igloo so like, I plugged stuff in (the 24 pin and some 4 pin labeled ATX 12V (?)), and the GPU, so now do I just yolo or what

bold igloo
#

i can’t remember the rest

jolly dove
#

idk I'm pretty sure those were all that were plugged in BigEyes

jolly dove
jolly dove
bold igloo
#

motherboard cpu gpu sata power to your drive and then try it and see if it works

#

sorry work caught me up

jolly dove
#

pretty sure the main drive's just an m.2 on there, the external ones I left unplugged just in case shit happens to them

jolly dove
jolly dove
kindred kestrel
#

it dosent turn on

jolly dove
#

right but shouldn't hurt anything past the damage that has alr been done right

#

ok I feel like I'm kinda asking too many questions tbh buuuut

#

what's like the worst thing that could happen

#

can I die

jolly dove
#

ok fuck it, yolo

#

ok wait actually

#

how do I turn the thingy on without a power button

#

don't j have to connect two pins or whatever? how do I know which

bold igloo
jolly dove
#

thanks, I'll try tmr. getting late here

jolly dove
#

ok so

#

the system does indeed boot (for future reference, boot = turns on, no matter if post or not) with only cpu, but doesn't give me any "hey uwu owo u did a fuckie wuckie, where's your ram!?" indicator

#

pretty sure it should have a speaker

#

I take it back

#

it just took a sec

jolly dove
#

oop

#

I think the ram is at fault

#

while it boots, it dies after like 10 secs and doesn't post

ashen cave
jolly dove
#

whar

#

wdym

jolly dove
#

should I plug shit in?

ashen cave
jolly dove
#

that shouldn't affect post righ

jolly dove
ashen cave
jolly dove
#

min

#

so just like that?

jolly dove
#

anything else I should consider?

#

before plugging it back in

ashen cave
#

i dont think so

jolly dove
#

aight sec

#

yolo

#

o

#

it doesn't reboot anymore

#

but beep

#

I love how the diagnostic message is a single beep

#

what am I supposed to do with that

jolly dove
#

until I cut the power

#

Endless repeating beeps are a RAM problem. Try the RAM one piece at a time, and in various slots. If

#

oh

#

hm

#

should I try same stick, diff slots?

jolly dove
# ashen cave i dont think so

ok yea no. I went to eat sth rq and reseated the stick after, same result in all 4 slots. should I try the other stick ig?

#

in theory I also got some sodimm sticks lying around somewhere, but that's not compatible righ

bold igloo
#

try each dimm the first slot closest to the CPU

#

one at a time, only one stick in that one slot

#

if nothing happens then its not the RAM

#

@jolly dove

jolly dove
#

I feel like the slots are borked. it turns on, and then reboots pre-post after like 10s. Second stick in third slot makes it beep continuously but that's the only other result I could get so far
