Im currently working on fixing a laptop but its having problems im not familiar with at all. it would work for a couple minutes then screen will go black but the back light is still on and the fan is spinning. then i would restart it and it would go black again as soon as put log into windows. im not sure if this is an overheating thing, a driver error, a drive error or some type of corrupted files but can anybody give advice?

also there were some errors when it came to downloading updates hopefully i can get insight on that too

the laptop model number is HP Laptop 17-cn2068cl

Does the computer remain active otherwise while the monitor goes black? For instance, if you start a YouTube video, will it continue running?

I would recommend that you try booting in safe mode and see if that helps. If it does, a simple reset should resolve the issue.

So safe mode didn't do anything?

Cool! So the problem runs deeper then.

#

If you start a YouTube video with audio, does the audio continue after the screen goes black?

#

(already asked this, but the answer was overwritten) 😦

Got it. Have you checked the temperatures with HWMonitor or something similar? And what happens if you go into bios? Does it crash there too?

i checked temps with throttlestop. it was idling around 50 but ill check again and make sure. also it does it in bios as well

#

it may be overheating

#

i know hp laptops are known for bad cooling

#

i opened it and there was a good amount of thermal paste and no dust in the fans

#

the laptop shut off soon as i plugged it in

Those are some suspicious temperatures unless it's under stress... And the fact that it does the same thing in bios makes me think it's something else than bad cooling.

#

This is getting tricky... Try resetting your bios just to rule that out.

didnt work

#

laptop cut off around 85 C

Maybe your bios was updated without you knowing? Could be faulty default values...
