Isn’t about a PC but more just advice. My laptop has run its course and I need a new one. One that’s pretty powerful because I need it to run some intensive renders and maybe simulations. Budget is 8k. I was looking at the MacBook Pro M3 max 16 core with 128gig ram and 8T ssd which costs about 7k. Anything else that I can get that’s better and around the same price.
#In the market with a budget of 8k

What’s this for exactly
Saved you 2gs and doubled the performance of the macbook
John Hamond needed a labtop for protein folding and sequence analysis... he got this.
How’s the cooling?
Bring a table fan
So, good?
Anything pushing that much wattage will be a like a space heater... can't be helped
I like to run laptops on a spacer if you will, get it up a inch off the tabletop.
Macs have good battery life. That's their best selling point.
Yeah this is what I did with my old one
I heard that the Mac’s don’t really struggle with heating though
If you want raw power, shop i9 + 4090
Or at least not nearly as much
They are half as fast, so half the heat
Why would you run renders of this caliber off a laptop?
Need mobility
In the lab, it's a must... so much I call em labtops
Internship/job/family business
And you’re buying this with your own money?
I gotta eat dinner btw so brb
Nope
For an internship?
It’s not really an internship
What’s the business?
Nice
I’ll be right back though I’m getting yelled at
Right I’m back. So the main concern I have is thermal throttling.
I’ve heard Mac’s don’t suffer from it as much
I’m not super worried about the money since I’m not paying for like 80% of it
With the intel/Nvidia system you can undervolt and select a more conservative clock to prevent thermal issues
While still getting more performance
Friends don't let Friends buy macs. Not only do you end up paying a huge a-hole tax... you're getting worse hardware that is virtually unrepairable and limited in its versatility.
XPS 16 with 4070 and u9 185h
And oled display
Better than a macbook
No thermal throttling at all
Can you drop a link
Cus I’m having trouble finding it
Dell

Its not a price-to-performance laptop
Rather a high end laptop
Memory’s only 32gigs though
Yeah I suppose, still half of what the Mac is.
The no thermal throttling is a big selling point for me cus it’s fucked up my last 2 laptops
So that’s good at least
Why would you need 128gb
Why not
I’m only paying like 20% of whatever I’m buying
So??
You could also get a last gen one, which still has so-dimm ram, and put in your own ram
13900h + 4080
I think
Dell

But it doesnt have oled, if that Matters
or if I really wanna push blender to its limits
Let me have a look
So it comes with 16 but I can add more
How much?
Also can it handle that much more ram?
So not quite as much ram. Any other advantages it has?
Besides being windows
||windows for life||
Compared to macbook?
meh
rather get a yoga pro 9i 16"
or like a zephyrus g16
Only if he needs a 4080 and 96gb ram he should get the 17"
Otherwise 16"
Its newer
128gb Camm Module
Rtx 5000 Ada
13950hx
4k 120hz 17"
And a smart card reader
4 nvme slots
That Dell is $2,000 more than the MSI system
Ada5000 versus the 4090, take the 4090 for sure.
not at productivity at all
ada5000 wins easy there
Double check your references, I was looking it up last night. The ada5000 in inferior in all the test except AI
Maby the desktop 4090 wins against the mobile 5000
Hmm, maybe I'll double check my references before proceeding...
Yhea, 4090 is 50% - 200% faster in almost everytest
At 450w vs 250w lol
That's desktop to desktop, no finding labtop specs
oh yea pretty sure thats true
but laptop should be better
as far as i know
I thought the 5000 would smoke a 4090 too, but that's not what I'm finding
btw. in what tests?
The chips are almost identical, it's just a power draw difference
Multiple tests from multiple sources, productivity, to synthetic, to gaming... 4090 wins em all. Again, with a 200w advantage.
Same chip, different tdp, memory and price tag. Dang they want all the money for ada5000
The words no one thought would ever be spoken, "that 4090 is looking like a bargan"
yea, the 4090 has better optimization for those things. The Ada5000 is made for AI-stuff and rendering
but i think the gap is rather small on mobile
From what i could find its about 2%
True, but $2000 price gap...
Why I'm recommending the MSI i9 4090 to our OP friend redacted
Thats business "tax", the precision line-up is made for business with good support and awesome warranty.
id would recommend getting the new dell xps https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/new-xps-16-laptop/spd/xps-16-9640-laptop/usexchcto9640mtl06?ref=variantstack
but he said he wants to max his budget

That can be huge.
The value of nerd support (talking about us) is strong.
Being able to get good support when minutes are mega dollars is huge
Never forget
Anything proprietary rattles me bones.
every laptop is
Essential yes... 😔😢
Build your own laptop ez
I highly recommend the MSI I originally sent you over the Macbook.
Run it in the peak efficiency power profile mode in windows to avoid heat.
Nvidia is releasing a tool to auto undervolt your gpu very soon. Undervolting the GPU helps to prevent excessive heat issues.
@silk girder
It's easy to detune a machine to make less heat, it's very hard to find extra performance.
You can turn the i9 4090 down to make less heat and still get amazing class leading performance.
With the Macbook, you literally get what you get. Overpriced and underperforming, but pretty and "simple" to use.
"Simple" as in you can't tune it and have no options, so all the decisions have been made for you.
Msi has bad Quality
They do in some case, not going to argue that.
This labtop is their flagship model and it won quite a few awards.
Reviews on it look pretty good...
