Hey! So I wanted to add some more drives to my unraid server. Its an old crapbox that over the years have been upgrading and upgrading. this time it was for more storage. I got 4 new hdd's decided they didnt want to boot. Thought that was weird tested it on my main build with an external hdd enclosure. Worked like a charm just a little slow since its an older hdd enclosure. plugged the enclosure in to my unraid server worked like a charm (unraid hates usb tho so that cant work) I decided maybe it was time to upgrade the psu. Got an EVGA 650 watt gold. still same issues. ONLY the new drives which are HGST 12tb drives are not working. The 4 6-8tb drives work perfectly. I've tried individual power cable. mixed with every single sata cable just to make sure that wasnt it. They arent even booting at all only the older drives ive had. Is there something that maybe I am missing here that I need to make sure I do?

Are they showing up in the bios? Maybe there's some settings you need to change in there
Hey! Sorry for the very late response. So the issue is the disks wont even spin up. It won't be able to be seen in bios. I've tried everything and can't seem to get it working.
could be a faulty sata power port from your psu
or faulty sata cable (very likely)
Check that the Sata Power and data cables are fully plugged in to start
So they are all fully plugged in thats the issue. I've tried all cables and power ports from the psu and they seem to work for the 6-8tb drives. but the 12tb's will not work every sata power doesnt work.
^
Your PSU probably doesn't like having to spin up that big of a HDD
What PSU do you have?
EVGA 650 GT gold 80+
Do any of those drives have a molex power connector on them?
And does the PSU have molex connectors?
PSU doesnt and the hard drives after looking at them also do not
Damn.
Have you tried these drives in another computer
I've only tried them via my usb external drive bays. I havent tried my main pc all of my cables are used up and I dont want to mess with what I've got going on on that right now lol
I can see if my buddy when he is off sunday has a spare we can test on
but using usb external on my windows pc it works like a charm
Assuming those have their own power from the wall, correct?
and technically it works with unraid but I have to reboot the server at least once every 24 hours and reconfigure my array.
Yea it does
Yeah, I bet it's just the psu doesn't like spinning up a 12tb drive
thats the weird thing my other psu had the same issue... do you recommend any psu that may?
I have a Seasonic 750 watt in my computer, can't remember the exact one tho
is there a way to specifically see what a hdd may draw? and if a psu could support that? I have four WD Ultrastar DC HC520 HDD | HUH721212ALE601
As far as I'm aware, there isn't.
My old PC is running a 256 gig SSD and 3 1TB HDDs, though I don't remember what PSU that computer has in it
I can look around and see. I am just very confused about this lol
