#S22+ Not Failing over to 5G

When my phone loses WIFI signal organically (ie driving away from my home) it will consistently indicate no data connection and require a restart before it will connect to Verizon 5G uw. However if I turn off WiFi manually while I still have a signal it has no problem switching to 5G immediately.

So far I have preformed a factory data reset and had a sales rep from Verizon replace the sim card.

5G might just be bad in your location

#

Turn off 5G and see if the problem persists

Boils down to a combination of the specific device, network congestion, distance from towers, etc. In all honesty, 5G is a good technology, but how it works has been marketed very poorly.

5G battery hog aswell

#

I have it turned off on 13 pro

If you really need 5g then go to your connection settings and choose mobile networks, then tap network mode, select "3g only" then go back to "5g/4g/3g/2g"

#

I do that sometimes when my phone refuses to connect to 5g

#

It works most of the time

Honestly not sure if my particular phone and carrier (Verizon) allows switching to 4G only as I can't seem to find any network mode settings.

Also right now my network connection is kinda slow -109dbm so that may be part of the issue. I will try not restarting to see if it's just a localized coverage issue I'm blaming my phone for.

Also just got sent a new update so hopefully it fixes everything tomorrow

Hope so too

Depending on the country of your phone and exact software version, these instructions may not be valid, but... tada! Choose the How to use your data and Wi-Fi -> Changing the network mode menu.

5G is great where I live in the UK like

#

legit zero usecases for me tho

chrome yacht
#

Same here - 5G technology is neat, but until providers install enough equipment to properly cover areas outside of major cities, it's just a sales gimick that most of the public hasn't educated themselves on.

agreed

#

internet sucks here tho

#

53mbps down

#

is my max

#

no gigabit

😦

5G is going to be most useful with higher bandwidth - more people on the same tower getting the same speed as fewer on 4G

misty steeple
#

Should I turn this off?

#

I'm thinking my sim is pretty locked down in my area so that's about all that's allowed.

Hopefully my neighborhood gets some of those nice 5g street lights eventually as it seems like it's a network issue to me.

#

.
Anyways thanks for the help everyone. Now I can blame my issues on someone else and put off replacing my phone for a while.

Did you follow the instructions in the link I shared? #1219466794805366804 message What do you see under Settings (app) > Connections > Mobile networks?

I can't fathom why a provider would lock down the network mode selection, or if they even should be able to give that your phone is unlocked... Though if it's running the carrier's own ROM + firmware, it's possible they block changing the settings maybe? IDK - I haven't had a carrier phone in forever because I refuse not actually owning something I've "bought."

Yee that looks a lot more like what I expect to see on most Android phones.

i personally think that physical sim cards are better

exactly

#

when i get a new phone, all i need to do is to pop out my sim and put it in the new

#

does the new one break and i need to roll back my phone? i put it back in the old

#

simple as that

misty steeple
#

Yup that's exactly what I did with this one as well as many previous but had issues so I've had 3 different physical sims in this one phone. Kinda thinking it could be that the drawer if worn out lol.

chrome yacht
#

The SIM tray / drawer being worn out won't prevent network settings from appearing in the Settings App... That's almost guaranteed to be a limitation of whatever OS ROM the phone is running. I know you said it's unlocked, but did you buy it from a carrier store (like Verizon, AT&T, etc.), or from Samsung directly?

misty steeple
#

I got the phone from Best Buy and specifically ordered the unlocked model. The sim card just swapped from my old phone and got replacement sim cards from the Verizon stores.

chrome yacht
#

Maybe Best Buy's "unlocked" models are just carrier phones (from Verizon, AT&T, etc.) but pre-unlocked - they'd take any SIM card, but may still be running a carrier provided OS ROM instead of a stock Samsung OS ROM.

what i think you should do is go to verison and cuss them out to the point where they'll give you an s24 ultra as a sorry

you will just get kicked out

possibly with police intervention

Also last time I was at Verizon they were very helpful and did everything they could to help

I'm starting to lose 5g randomly now but toggling airplane mode seems to fix it quickly. Definitely wish I thought of that earlier.

chrome yacht
#

I'ma be blunt: I've yet to see a real-world benefit for 5G connectivity that outweighs its unreliability for those who don't live within 1km line-of-sight to a 5G cell site. To be clear I'm not discounting the benefits of 5G when it works, but I'd rather have a stable 4G/LTE (or 3.5G/HSPA+) connection than an unreliably dodgy 5G connection.

elfin anchor
#

^ can vouch for the same, 4G is just MUCH more reliable.. 5g is really only decent for doing downloads (say system updates, app updates, etc..)

#
  • 5G also carries way more battery drain compared to 4G, so you end up also getting battery savings by just forcing 4G
misty steeple
#

I still think it's a phone issue as it has full bars and will just drop the internet part until I toggle airplane mode. I was restarting when this happened until I remembered airplane mode is an option.
