#2.4 GHz WiFi stops working when microwave is on but 5GHz is fine.

Id change the (band or whatever it's called)
There are different bands
Different frequency ranges
Could just run the microwave then do an auto select on the router
i have no experience in routers, i know a lot pc wise but when it comes to wifi idk anything so idk what your talking abt
There's gonna be a something that has it find the best channels for 2.4 and 5GHZ
Gotta find the website
It's on the router
ok
It's an IP address I think
ok thanks
the interferance from the microwave is so strong that likely a different channel won't help. my old phone used to loose connection completely when the microwave was on. Either try a new microwave, use 5GHz only or use wires :/
It only happens to my computer
And it seems to have a lower connection when in this specific room as well as my phone
I can easily put my pc priority to 5ghz and I’ve done it before, but my pc is at the bottom of the bandwidth list or smth bc it’s constantly terrible
How far away is your computer from the router
Or just how far is that room you’re in. Generally you want to be within 50ft of a router. But I think the max distance is like 300ft, though of course the speeds drop dramatically at that length
And put it midway between your AP and PC
Ya you can buy a repeater, or if possible just move the router closer to the room.
About 30 feet though walls
I would like to but there’s no way we can hide the cable
Id also like to but the room it’s in is the only place where fiber optic is
what are the walls made of?
Concrete, brick, or metal will cause a lot of interference
Idk, I assume it’s wood and drywall
But there might be a brick wall but I don’t think so
that's weird then, ya your connection should be better
The left pic is when I’m in the room with the bad connection
The right is in the room with the router
These were both taken with your phone?
Yes
Within seconds of each other
Just now
And this is in the basement
I’ve tested everywhere it is just the one room
Ah ofc now the room is hitting 200
The upload speed is really bad in the room when the microwave is on but the download is 150
Upload is like 9
do you have a laptop? just cause instead of doing speedtests, which take long, there's a good program I like which just checks signal quality. And that achieves the same thing but it's much quicker. I don't really like any of the ones for the phone.
Ya it'll work with pc, its just that you need to walk around with it to check signal quality around your house. And you can't do that with PC
But I mean I guess it's already confirmed that your room has some kind of wifi interference problem. I'm just not sure what's causing it
The only other laptop I have has no os
When my phone is on the pc the upload speed is abt 7
The download is still up at 150
Lemme do it tomorrow but what’s the name of the software?
Oh it only works for windows, but don't worry about it. I think it'll just confirm what we already know
Yeah
There’s a solar panel thing on the outside wall of the room
But in the room next to it in the corner closest to the messed up room it’s still really good speeds
Oh okay I have some ideas for stuff we can try. But tomorrow since it's pretty late. Course I don't know what your house looks like, but I think that if the interference is caused by signals on the same frequency band, then we can change router settings to try a different channel.
For the weak WIFi signal, as mentioned above, either wire the PC directly to the router, or buy a mesh solution (Quality ones will run you 100~200$). Don't buy dumb repeaters, they introduce latency and issues.
Want to use only 2.4 and test with that
Oh my pirating laptop should only support 2.4
Would a repeater be fine for a garage or something?
Yup, totally fine
What about outside the house?
Should be fine, just don't expect stellar performance from them
And latency could be also an issue with repeaters
Also, downside of repeaters is that they just rebroadcast the same or similar SSID, so a phone sometimes won't automatically switch to it (can stay connected to weaker WiFi signal), etc. That's why i'm recommending a Mesh solution
My phone is also affected by the microwave only when it’s on in the bad room
We used a repeater in another part of the house and it did not work at all
Just using Speedtest In the room improved it
Every test that’s done in this room is getting better
Except for right now, it’s bad again, but zoom is using a lot of the bandwidth
And most of the computers are being used rn
2.4GHz is close to a microwave. The best you can do is avoid the microwave when you need 2.4GHz wifi
Yeah
Or just use 5GHz
2.4 is dumb as shit NGL
Who thought that would be a good idea
And it's microwave frequency which is just dumb unless there's an actual reason
Usually microwaves don't emit so much radiation though
Enough that it kills 2.4GHz if you’re near it
2.4GHz is also really cheap iirx. You can put it on random devices and microcontrollers and shit like that super easily
i agree, but i have to use it, bc every other device uses 5 and when i try to use 5 it doesnt really function
constantly laggy arguably slower than 2.4
unless its leaking
Get a better router
Never had that issue with mine
Then it's time for a new one
no we have a lot of devices on it constantly
but idk if it is or isnt
It probably ain't that bad
its a very new tp link one that we got very recently
All are gonna leak a little
my wifi basically turned off when it was on, but now after i used speed test in the room it rine
You sure that's on 2.4?
i tested it yesterday, and the pc wifi was on 2.4, i ran the microwave (with smth in it ofc) and the speed test dropped dramatically
Imma try that real quick
but the funny thing is it was only in the specific room
2.4ghz as a band has a lot of interference
2.4ghz WiFi has been around for over 20 years, the band is more crowded now. 2.4ghz will also always have better range than 5ghz, all other things equal.
But why use the same as a microwave
That's what was licensed
Why transmit with like a few milliwatts when every home has a massive 1000W+ microwave in it
That's a massive oversight NGL
There are several uses of the 2.4 GHz ISM radio band. Interference may occur between devices operating at 2.4 GHz. This article details the different users of the 2.4 GHz band, how they cause interference to other users and how they are prone to interference from other users.
The 802.11 committee investigated that, you'd have to ask them
So it should be a non issue cause it can switch bands
Also yeah magnetrons only on 50% the time
Someone needs to make a dual magnetron microwave
But yeah 2.4 is really just stuck in the past
5GHz is better unless you in the garage or some shit
2.4ghz is good for IOT you don't want polluting your 5ghz band
it also has longer range
Would be interesting having like a 1GHz band or something
Good news, there exists such a thing, 802.11ah standard, better know as HaLow Wifi :)
What frequencies
Sub 1Ghz ( Depends on country)
Around 1Km on a good day, 1~10 Mbps throughput
Be nice if the FCC could stop crying about the routers being "too strong"
Should make my own
Just gotta keep the feds away
Microwaves operate on 2.4GHz. This is why it can cancel out the routers 2.4GHz band.
Ohh then thats why my wifi keep getting slow when my microwave is starting
💀
Yeah it actually does act as a jammer
