#When upgrades turn to a new build
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
One point of discussion was my current BeQuiet CPU cooler on my current build, a very large one with three fans.
Would it be enough for the I-7 13700k or is water cooling a better option?
what CPU do you currently have?
that 3080 will not last until another 7-8 years, not gonna have enough vram
Prepare to cry.
Overclocked I-7 8700K
honestly, if i were you i'd wait another gen
I’ll upgrade it along the way, just want to get the build up to scratch
The I-7 14th Gen is very similar to 13th Gen without giving many if any improvements
exactly
So 15th gen?
wait til 15th gen (or i guess 1st gen ultra) or ryzen 9000
if you want to upgrade now though, it's very hard to argue against the 7800x3d
it's an insanely good gaming chip
15th gen is expected at the end of 2024, that’s a bit late for me
then i'd just grab a 7800x3d
Does the rest of the build look good?
i'd grab 6000mhz CL30 RAM
most bang for the buck speed right now
and since you're only gaming, the 7800x3d is definitely better than any intel chip
it is the fastest gaming chip you can get right now
you can also reuse your cooler with it cause it only draws like 70w on load. assuming you have the correct mounting, of course
Just need new thermal paste then
I’ll have to search about for the box, I kept the AMD mounting and all spare parts
do check if you still have the mounting, cause if you dont and they charge you like $30 for new mounting hardware, at that point just buy a new cooler. peerless assassin is also $30 and performs better than your cooler lol
Does thermal paste even matter in brand?
Artic or Corsair is readily available near me
well yeah, different pastes can perform differently
but with a 7800x3d, that chip is so efficient that you dont really need to care what paste you use
Like very badly.
just grab a decent paste and a $20 tower cooler and it will cool just fine
Would recommend MX-4 for paste.
One thing, I have heard often that AMD specifically tanks your FPS in some older games like ArmA 3
ArmA 3 is my most played game and I hope to have many more years with it
i havent heard of those issues for their CPUs
maybe on their GPU? but support for older games was also fixed recently
Apparently AMD stirs up big drama in the ArmA community
ArmA 3 is very CPU demanding, single core
but i'm guessing that it might be GPU related
yes, the 7800x3d should equal or exceed the 14900k even in single core games
Talking to someone who has the 7800x3d but it’s giving him worse performance than me with my I-7 8700K in ArmA.
I know, I’m not making a build around a 10 year old game but it’s a factor.
Silicon Power Value Gaming 32 GB isn't available through that website where I'm getting my parts
What about some Corsair 32 GB DDR5-6000 VENGEANCE
Changed up some parts yet again
Settled for a I7-14700K and Corsair 32 GB DDR5-6000 RAM.
Ditched the watercooler since I'm transferring my BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4
Get frost commander instead
At least in the us its much cheaper
Oh you already have it
Nvm
What’s the latency
I would probably not ditch the AIO if you’re on intel, in fact i’d grab a 360mm if possible
Intel chips run insanely hot

Is the information...
Legit?
Did Intel changed something with 14th Gen?
Cus... no way it's... that hot.
they might get a 7800X3D anyway
also does the 13700k really draw that much
260W
all core
damn
gaming isn't that bad tho
Settled on Intel, likely end up getting the I7 14700k
why specifically?
Performance with specific games like ArmA, I’ve always handled with Intel in the past as well
It’s also the heat density. Heat divided into 2 chiplets is a lot easier to cool than one very densely packed chip
true
thats why threadrippers can use wimpy coolers lol
Had the NZXT Kraken picked out before
So you’d encourage a 360mm water cooler like this?
Since a 360mm would need to go into the front
I could fit a 240mm to the top and keep three fans at the front and one at the rear
Since the case comes with three fans and I can put my smaller BeQuiet fan from my old build into the new
I’d like some RGB in the front since it compliments the colours of the rest of my desk and setup.
Most airflow will be from the top and front for me
If I get a 360mm I would make that RGB and ditch the RGB fans on the case. Transfer them from the front to one in the rear and two on the top.
Since the case comes with three fans as standard
I thought about going for Corsair for AIO
They’re almost as bad
Maybe a 280 in the top
A 360 fits in the front though
Pretty much I’m split between getting an adapter piece for my BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4.
Getting a 360mm RGB and putting it in the front.
Getting a 240 for the top.
Front is less optimal
Think a 360 might be best since my best intake will be from the front
Also you mean 360?
Ah
What does the 280mm at the top require?
Low profile memory?
Short RAM sticks that don’t stick out?
try to get CL30
yea
DeepCool LS520 240mm is the only one available through this website, if I order multiple componements I get a discount.
Praised for being very quiet and efficient, tags along with your mobo’s RGB platform
Pretty much settled with it then.
It’s been like 6-7 years since I last did anything other than a single upgrade or part swap.
How will transferring my files and windows go?
I don’t want to lose all my files but do want a relatively clean install of just windows and no other programs.
I have a legal version of windows 10
Fuck em. Microsoft can shove it up theirs if they don't like it. I use mas. Win 11 pro for free
After all this time I’m still not used to Windows 10
I can find my way around Windows XP and Vista with a blindfold on
Windows XP. Need to use that.
What do you think of vista?
Sounds like garbage to me
Horrible
XP my beloved
I got to enjoy it up until around 2014 when the Dutch police scrapped it
Took them long enough
Hold up, I just thought of something
I plan on using my current M.2 as the main drive for windows.
If I do a relatively clean reinstall of windows on my current device, get out the M.2 and put it in my new setup, will that transfer all files and Windows?
That would make my life a whole lot easier, it’s just storage after all.
yes but windows is a shitty os so sometimes transferring hardware can cause issues
you can try it might work
I’ll make a back-up of everything and then still transfer
If it works it’ll be positive and save me some work
If it doesn’t, yahoo
