So my new gpu (geForce rtx 3060) finally came in today (initial hype) so I took the time to swap out my old gpu (geForce 1040). despite it being my first time doing it, I got it in pretty well, I looked for extra power connectors.

I saw only six pins in my motherboard instead of eight but I didn’t put any regard for it and figured I was fine with having two off…of course it didn’t turn on so I just switched them back and now the old one and now my pc isn’t turning on

did I kill my motherboard?? I’m so serious I prefer not to go to geeksquad about this 🙏

I still need to clean her up but this is it rn

So that's just an extra cable for when you use a graphics card that needs it, the one you're holding

#

The motherboard looks to still have the 8 pin and 24 pins connected in that photo so that's fine

yea, thing is, I already tried to power it up with the new one I had installed earlier right? I didn’t have enough pins for it

Your GPU isn't inserted fully

#

THe one in the picture, anyway

#

The 3060 wont boot if the power connector isn't fully populated

eternal lake
#

that would mean the 1040 too?

#

Naturally, I guess

#

The 1040 doesn't have a power connector
But it's also not fully in the slot

#

In the first pic you can see it's sticking out slightly

#

Unless my eyes are failing me lol
But it can't hurt to take it out and reinsert it

I’ll give you an update in a few minutes I might have to Jimmy this thing

#

I just reinserted it and no juice, although, it wasn’t in all the way, your eyes def are still working

Unplug the PSU entirely, try start the system a few times, plug PSU back in, try again

#

Also sanity check, the PSU has been turned on for your prior attempts at trying to power on the system, yeah?

mhm

#

You have the cpu 8 pin in the motherboard and not a GPU 8 pin in it right?

eternal lake
#

yeah, right

#

only 6 pin for the gpu

warm berry
#

Wait so you put the 6 pin GPU connector in the motherboard?

#

And then tried it and it didn’t work and swapped it back?

eternal lake

and now it won’t turn on?

#

It should be fine…

eternal lake
#

right now I’m checking out the PSU itself, just screwed it back in. I’m gonna try turning it on again but yeah man, that’s why I’m confused myself, It should be fine

#

Yep, no dice

#

Your PSU may of died

#

Might just be that it decided to die when you put your new GPU in

#

I’d suggest using a known good PSU to see if it fixes it

eternal lake
#

Wait, hold on man, it just came back to life

#

I moved it a little bit closer. (closer to where it originally rested )Maybe the cords are getting junk and I had to put it in a certain angle but when I did move it, it just came right back on.

#

so it might’ve been my house’s fault?? idk but at least I didn’t have to spend 150 dollars for a convo

#

thanks guys seriously, i don’t think I would’ve pushed on further if I hadn’t had this small convo goodjob
