Hey everyone,
I've been dealing with a frustrating issue lately and could really use some advice. I initially thought it was a power supply problem, so I replaced my old EVGA P5 850W with a new EVGA P6 850W. However, the problem resurfaced after about a month and a half.
Here are my PC specs for context:
MOBO: Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra 10GB non-lhr
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z Royal 4000MHZ CL18 32GB (downclocked to 3600MHZ)
PSU: EVGA P6 850W (Originally had an EVGA P5 850W)
PSU cables: Cablemod Modmesh Pro
OS: Windows 10 22H2
The issue started after I upgraded Windows 10 from 20H2 to 22H2 to try out the new DirectX 12 Ultimate feature. On 20H2, my system was stable, but after the upgrade, I encountered problems, especially during VR sessions or while idling. I've tried various troubleshooting steps, including a fresh install of Windows, but the problem persists.
When the issue occurs, monitor signal cuts out, my screen resolution becomes tiny (around 240p) when accessing my PC remotely via Steam Link. Nvidia Control Panel doesn't detect my graphics card, but EVGA Precision X1 does and reports unusual information, and the problem is triggered by VR sessions or certain stress tests.
I initially thought the EVGA P5 PSU was the culprit, so I replaced it with the P6, and everything seemed fine for a while. However, the problem returned after a month and a half, and now it triggers under slightly different conditions.
I suspect my PSU(s) might not be handling transient spikes well, particularly with my RTX 3080, causing brief power cuts and resulting in signal loss, dwm.exe crashes, and other issues. I'm also considering the possibility of Windows 10 22H2 causing software-related problems.
I'm at a loss on what to do next. Should I RMA my EVGA P6, or consider getting a different PSU with higher wattage that handles transients better? I'd really appreciate any insights or suggestions you all might have. Thanks!
