Hi all! I've been having an issue with my pc where it will randomly crash (screen goes black and audio cuts out), mainly in between matches of games or in game menus. It varies with each game but I have tried many troubleshooting options and haven't made any progress. Any Ideas? Also have had pc 8ish months, did same thing for maybe a day or 2 when first built and then no issues until last week.
#PC completely crashing forcing a restart

Its kernel 41 issue.
It is related to faulty PSU, Overlocking issues, Overheating and ETC.
First of all please share your specs with us and monitor your temps during your gaming sessions.
Do you remember changing any settings in Windows? Or updating BIOS?
I don't believe I changed any settings.
I assune this is what I should send or should I just type out everything?
so no xmp
Not sure what that is...
wrong chat
The temp for cpu was around 50 and the gpu 80.
Seems good but I want you to check your BIOS to know if XMP is enabled or not.
Does it happens often or one day a day?
It happens about every 15 min, varies with every game and seems to be triggered by menus but it does happen often
Where is the xmp in bios
what is your motherboard company name?
Oh I think I just found it- there is only 1 option and it is ddr5- 5600…
As I can see your XMP is enabled.
To check if XMP is crashing your pc we need to disable it.
There is option to auto there or off something?
auto
Okay then start up?
yes
Well, we are checking if XMP is crashing your pc or not.
Keep your pc on and lets hope it does't restart again.
Okay it booted back up- should I try to reproduce problem?
yes.
can you do one more thing?
type "msinfo32" in your search box
and send me screenshot of your system information pls.
Indeed it will.
But lets first check your xmp.
reproduce problem you were facing
Okay might take a few minutes
@onyx wasp didn’t work still crashed
hmmm.
Okay enable your XMP again
and we will update your bios
okay?
enable and exit.
@deft mural can I know more about your PSU?
Good enough
do you any memory pen drive?

Please do not make any kind of mistakes.
If your power cuts during bios update it can brick your motherboard.
@deft mural ok?
okay
plug in the pc
and format it as FAT32
then follow the video
please make sure to choose right motherboard on asus website.
So I followed the steps but all I am seeing is this when I get to flash utility
@onyx wasp
Those look like older versions
Those are just your storage devices
Select the one that has the bios file
Is your USB stick 32gb?
Hmmm I sent him a video lets hope he follows right steps.
Did you use the bios renamer that asus included with the download of the new bios file?
If not you are going to need to use that before flashing
Anyways since I’m assuming the 32gb storage device is you usb stick select storage device fs3 after you do that
Do u install latest bios of your motherboard in the pen drive right?
Into flash or pc?
I will make a video for you brb
I did the renamed and restarting now
@onyx wasp sorry I didn’t want to unzip because he didn’t😂
Yes
Yes
This is a quick tutorial video I made btw
Ok then go into bios and you are good to flash
Select fs3
Actually, the file is just there in the top right to just click that
TGZ690P.CAP
no
im assuming you forgot to extract the files but you should be able to manually rename
ill just send you the file if you want
but i would do it yourself for security reasons
I did extract then use that bios renamer
It then changed the name to what you had but without the w
weird
And that’s the one that didn’t work
try redoing it from here

Engineered with military-grade components, an upgraded power solution and a comprehensive cooling system, this motherboard offers rock-solid and stable performance for marathon gaming.
im assuming you got the file for the non wifi version of the board
Should I add the “w”
no
I tried again and it still is saying the same thing
redo the process from the link i sent you
I just did
Hmmm
i have no idea why it would be doing that
no
you have to do it the hard way
but the flashing tool is pretty easy anyways
I know flash mode but it is his first time updating the bios we can expect few problems
I have MSI mobo and I don't know how asus bios updating works
what is this bios renamer application?
@vital kayak
With Asus' bios files you have to rename the bios with the renamer since when you first download it is isn't properly named.
If at all easier or more preferable we could hop on call- I’m fine with this as well
But I’m sure I’m following what you guys are saying
Let me get my headset.
Send me a call.
I sent friend request.
I'll stream myself doing the process.
let me know if you guys able to fix the problem
@vital kayak @onyx wasp didn’t end up working:(
Unfortunate.
Only thing left to try is making a bootable USB with windows and running it off of your USB stick to test if it is your windows install and or your storage.
otherwise you might need to bring it to a repair shop
Okay, so did you build this pc by yourself or you bought from any store or company? If you have a bill then you can visit the person who built your pc. However what is the exact problem? Updating bios is easy but it is a critical process.
We already updated bios.
I walked them through the process in VC.
I also got them to do a memtest.
I'm currently of the mind that it may be a hardware issue.
Only thing that hasn't been tested is what is described in the message I am replying to.
Sorry been out all day. I built myself- but the only problem is the crashing. Also I have a Corsair water cooler
Yeah I was hoping to avoid that but that’s looking like my only option at this point
I’m pretty sure all drivers are up to date- although I did it all through windows
Yeah so
Sometimes Windows Update drivers cause issues
Try installing the latest drivers from your GPU manufacturer
What's your GPU?
Rx 6950xt
Wait, I can find it
Try to run it
And go through and let it install the latest drivers when it asks so
There’s one that came out a few days ago so I’ll update but I’m pretty sure I did that last week after the problem started happening
Yep that’s what I have
Oh you have it already?
Then everything should be up to date
There’s one for the 25th it wasn’t updated to
Anyway you don’t have to reinstall windows
You can use a bootable drive to test if it is your windows installation being funky
kernel issue 41 is headache 😦 ... I think Blue screen of deaths are good at least they gave errors. But Black screen of death!
We already made sure it is not XMP, Bios so now it will be hardware troubleshoots and software, OS.
@deft mural - The restarts happens on every games or just specfic game or software?
Since you have an intel chip I’m assuming you have integrated graphics?
Every game
Try running pc without dedicated gpu
He had K verison. I have AMD cpu from start so does K verison have intergrated gpu?
I’m gonna try real quick to reproduce problem- I realize that I used it a bit earlier and it didn’t crash- but I wasn’t on for long at all
Pretty sure if it’s not an f chip it has igpu
As @vital kayak said, please disable your intergrated gpu through Device manager.
Okay yeah I’ll try if it crashes again
No I meant to ask them to do the opposite to test if the dedicated gpu was the issue
Hmmm you want to check the temps right?
okay
Since we already have all of the drivers up to date and have done a memtest to test the dram the only things it could be is windows or hardware
Okay, let's hope its not hardware.
Easiest to quickly test is gpu since it’s the easiest to remove besides the dram
I forgot but what psu do you have?
Rm850x
Oddly enough I believe this is the longest it has lasted without crashing
It might still crash but that’s exactly what happened last time where it still crashed after I tweaked it but then randomly stopped
I’ve ran like 6 or 7 games so far and the longest it has lasted before was like max 3
good enough
but I want you to check the temps while you gaming. did u have any software which can show the temps while gaming!?
Nooooo we were doing so good 😦 it crashed again
Ummm yes but I gotta remember names
Well actually I don’t know- I have msi afterburner would that work?
Is there any that will log even if the computer crashes
Also the raedon app
@onyx wasp
It crashed after you removed the Gpu?
or did you do something else?
I was just testing- it just was working all of the sudden- but I’m removing it now. It’s safe to run without?
@vital kayak
Could I just unplug the gpu from power supply? Or do I need to remove it entirely
I would do both.
Then what? I just powered it on
use the computer
do something that would cause a crash before
Is it bad to run games on solely the included gpu?
no its fine
just dont expect the highest frame rate lmao
its going to be doodoo
I’m sitting at a smooth 8 fps😂
Hmmm well follow @vital kayak troubleshoots. I will recommend something that will make sure if it is OS issue or not.
Afterburner
I want you to focus on the temps.
if on low usage your cpu is peaking then we might have overheating issue.
If you have an old GPU that would've been even better to test with but it would be a pain in the ass since you would need to run a DDU and download the drivers for that GPU
I honestly would've ruled out software first before jumping into hardware.
DDU as well as sytem integrity test would've been on the list.
So far I can’t make issue happen- not sure if that’s gpu related or it’s just taking longer to crash now
Yeah it wasn’t happening- much harder to produce but maybe that means it is hardware related. I can try the other software stuff in case tho
I might've mixed this for another post but I didn't make them run a DDU before because i thought we already did.
probably mistaken if you brought it up though.
anyways we basically updated every driver and flashed the newest version of the bios so far
and ran a memtest
I'm aware, I read the entire thread before I added my input
I've seen enough people jump in and say stupid stuff since they hadn't read all the messages
would be ironic if I did the exact same thing. :P
Damn i should really trust you more after seeing all of the posts you have been in.
You're good, I still get people telling me I'm wrong. Sometimes I am.
Eh, I'm not so arrogant to jump to the conclusion I wasn't wrong first since you are usually on point in the support channels.
I see too many people get defensive when it does nothing for the situation.
Anyway I feel like you're on the right track with graphics card being the culprit here. But I'm not convinced the issue is directly hardware related since the issue is so inconsistent.
That's why I would approach with DDU and system integrity check first.
Yes, especially since we haven't tried doing what you said earlier.
You mean like sfc /scannow?
I think I was in dms with them when we did that.
Yes you mentioned something about going into a VC with them.
That would mean the integrity check is in fact done then.
That leaves us with just DDU and fresh install of the drivers.
Sorry y’all I passed out last night- I did uninstall and reinstall the drivers through windows before I made the post. But once again through windows
My only issue with that is I don’t get why it hasn’t been happening the whole time I’ve had the pc- I just don’t get what fixes it last time
Use DDU this time and then do a fresh install of drivers.
If you're having trouble uninstalling, removing or deleting your old video card drivers or having trouble installing drivers for a new graphics card? Then DDU may be able to help. This video is a step by step tutorial showing where to download Display Driver Uninstaller, how to install it to your PC and how to use DDU to uninstall your old Dis...
Started popping up when I ran safe mode- relevant?
Now should I go through the steps yesterday of downloading the driver from and?
@ornate slate @vital kayak
@onyx wasp
Your gpu is amd yeah?
Yup
Just use amd software to get the drivers
Didn’t work
Please type "Advanced System Settings" in search you can see the options "Startup and recovery" click on it then there is section called "system failure" u have to uncheck auto restart option.
Oh I see
then there is section called "system failure" u have to uncheck auto restart option.
Will that do anything to computer if there is a failure?
in case of system failure windows will not restart. It will make sure weather it is os issue or hardware
it restarted
open again and see if it unchecked
Yeah it’s still unchecked
okay
now again try to reproudce the problem. Keep in my if your pc still restarts then we might be facing some hardware issue
xt but yes
I have a membership through Best Buy and didn’t realize they troubleshoot software remotely so I’m on call with them now
Maybe they have better tools?🙏
But that part is “free”
Doubt it but it’s always good to try
Could still be the PSU ngl
Yeah
I would recommend testing the graphics card in another system first
Or just grabbing a new unit from a local hardware store and using the return policy if it doesnt solve the issue.
I've seen RM850x fail in a few threads already so I would not be surprised if that's the case here as well.
If you need a new psu get a Deepcool pq1000m if you want the extra wattage.
The pci-e cables are a bit ugly but they are really good for the price
But I’m pretty sure your current psu would still be under warranty
Since I’m assuming you got it when you built this system
So you should be able to get a new one of the same model via RMA
If it’s the psu
does the memory clock freq match the rating of the memory modules?
cause memory modules can be rated for a lower frequency
and then be unstable if you run them any higher
Yeah that would be it’s max rated speed
So I’m fine then?
Yeah
👍
They’ll probably say it’s fine
Although it is starting to work better-like dramatically
I don’t know wtf is up with this system
The really random crashes are usually of the electrical kind. Caused by one of the three levels you have. First is voltage from the grid, second is your psu, third is the motherboard vrm (voltage regulation module). The last two are to guard your system from grid fluctuations that happen all the time. If they fail, you get voltage dips and spikes and they usually lead to crashes because the gates on the cpu fail to open and close on time, the logic faults and it's a crash.
It can be anything! I was facing the same issue and it turns out I have to set my aio pump to DC
If you bought the sticks, check the product name
If you still have the box read it off the box
Therere a million reasons to why the system resets
Most of them non power related
I really don’t understand what’s up with it- it’s random but predictable. At this point it has been running perfect for a few hours. It seems to have just stopped doing it again and while that’s a good thing I just can’t figure out the issue.
