#Failing disk set to read-only, neither diskpart or registry edits works/ Macrium code 0x8004230c

You are correct in suspecting that the read-only property is preventing Macrium from creating a volume snapshot. This is because Macrium needs to be able to write to the disk in order to create the snapshot.
There are a few things you can try to fix this error:
Disable the read-only property on the disk. You can do this by using the Disk Management tool in Windows.
Try using a different cloning software. There are a number of other cloning software programs available, such as Acronis True Image and EaseUS Disk Copy.
Boot from a Windows installation disk or recovery disk. This will start Windows in a recovery mode where you should be able to clone the disk without the read-only property being enabled.
If you are still unable to clone the disk after trying these steps, then it is possible that the disk is too damaged to be cloned. In this case, you will need to replace the disk with a new one and then reinstall Windows.
Thank you for the reply and suggestion. This drive is not used as a boot/system drive and it is running alongside my system drive, so will running windows in recovery mode do achieve the same effect of removing the read-only attribute?
also I have tried cmd with diskpart, it is only able to clear one of the 2 read-only attributes using attribute disk clear readonly: Current Read-only State : Yes Read-only : No Boot Disk : No Pagefile Disk : No Hibernation File Disk : No Crashdump Disk : No Clustered Disk : No
Neither did creating a new variable using regedit.
And window's partitioning tool doesn't give me the choice to turn off the read-only mode either.
