#Which HDR setting is better

So my HDR monitor has two color profile and I don't know which one is better so I hope someone can help point me in the right way . Someone might say that " depends on your preference" and these other opinions won't matter but I still want to listen to some expert thoughts cause they might let me know something I have no knowledge about .

The left pic and 1st profile is from MSI ( my current monitor) itself. This profile is darker and has a cooler temp so it looks like it has a blue tint over it .

The right pic and 2nd profile is from rtings- a big famous web that test every single monitor and calibrate these monitors colo for free. They said this profile is more on the warmer side so it looks like it has a yellow tint and the brightness is way higher compared to 1st profile.

And if anyone ask for my preference, well since i am only a common user , both are fine to me . The 1st profile is suited for when i turn off all room lights since it's darker. But my monitor has a light bar so even in dark room , i can use the 2nd profile and not hurt my eyes either .

Since i am only a common user , I could have missed something in using one of these profile so would appreciate if anyone can point out any point of interest.

Gpu rtx 3080
Driver 537.34
Display port 1.4 i think.
Os Windows 11 pro 22h2
Monitor msi mag274qrf-qd

Left looks better imo, but you need someone's opinion IRL for this. The thing about color calibration profiles is that they are not one size fits all because monitors are all a little bit unique. You'd need an actual calibration tool to do this.

Yeah I know But these Color calibration took money So I just go with one of these free alternative online

#

They look decent enough though so I am not really willing to pay 30 $

Yeah that's the tool itself , I meant bring my monitor to a shop and just let them calibrate only

alpine minnow
#

Just watch this video and use it to calibrate manually

flat trellis
#

They do have that here. They even have a youtube video about the tool on their channel and offer service

Lemme test . i am not confident that my calibrating skill is better than these expert though So that is why I go for their profile

alpine minnow

The reason I say that the tool is worth it is because you need to recalibrate every so often.

#

either way, unnecessary for you

My PC does not has a profile , I check and I only has 2 profiles which are the 2 I donwload . So that is why Rtings give my monitor a low ratings on out of the box color accuracy

#

Only Until I donwload these 2 profiles I can see the differences

Yeah I am no artitst and if I am an artist , I would not buy a " gaming " monitor anyway so I just want to go with free color profile now instead of going out of my way and buy this calibration device and barely use it

#

Yeah my phone camera is not the best so these 2 pics are just for example only. It's hard to tell throught these pictures

#

Like even through screenshot , Monitors color can already change quite drastically

#

nevertheless this is a camera shot

alpine minnow
#

anyways, I think I answered your questions

flat trellis
#

Thank you so much again , I am in your debt now . for my Experience HDR is all about bright ness. Which is why hdr 1000 cost way more than hdr 600 So I think brighter is better when It come to HDR . That is why I use the one from rting more

#

the one from MSI is straight from the make itself so I am using it frequently now and It's just as good for my commoner eyes

alpine minnow
#
HDR-1000 is the same as HDR-600, except it claims to have a peak brightness of 1000 nits
#

only difference is minimum brightnes I think

All my life I have been using single monitor only so I am way out of luck with this topic AichanCry

again, you do not owe me anything. All I ask is that you help other people out if you are capable (on this server or in real life). Pay it forward.

Spoken like a true saint

#

tbh , I have require helps from many people from here and none close to you level of helpfulness and enthusiasm so you deserve every praise from me

#

BTW does that mean having HDR 1000 but not using 1000 nits for your profile is a good thing ? am I understanding your lines correct ? .

# flat trellis BTW does that mean having HDR 1000 but not using 1000 nits for your profile is a...

Depending on the monitor, yes. Some will allow you to go above 1000 nits and sacrifice image quality. Lower light == deeper colors and better visuals (also black is black instead of looking like a "pale black"). HDR X ratings are basically just a promise that "it looks good to me at X nits". Generally speaking, HDR 600 is good for most. You don't really need to go above that.

It all depends on what you want to do.

flat trellis

I see . I used to ask some people about what HDR feature should I look into when buying a hdr monitor and they said " HDR 1000 is a must " anything below 1000 is just pseudo - HDR and is not cabaple of delivering what HDR suppose to be so for them hdr 600 and below is just simply higher peak brightness sdr monitor . That is why I always thought using peak brightness you can for your monitor is the way to go

alpine minnow
#

main takeaways: There are three main HDR formats (HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision). Pay more attention to those

flat trellis
#

Wow so not only peak brightness good enough now I need to consider hdr format too ?? I did not know HDR format is also a thing . I don't even see monitor advertise their HDr format

#

all they do is the peak brightness

alpine minnow
flat trellis
#

but wait is the format come with the monitor ? Or the consumed media ? ? Sorry I am so dumb when it comes to these new topic

alpine minnow
flat trellis
#

I just check a few popular monitor but even at Hdr 400 600 they still have not supported hdr 10 so I guess Monitor with HDr 10 must ahve come with another premium price

#

but what is the point of buying hdr monitor if it can't support hdr format

#

I dont really get it

alpine minnow
flat trellis
#

oh it's rtings , the place i get my color profile from

#

well the only reason I consider MSI one was because they are the maker so I try their profile out but still which one is better is just too hard to decide

alpine minnow
flat trellis
#

I am switching them when playing now and TBH , the other profile look worse when first change but after my eyes accomodating to the change of brightness, I find both look just as good . One look cooler and one look warmer is the only difference

#

So I guess I'll play the warmer one in winter and cooler one is Summer , perhaps ?
