#Computer slow, no utilisation

my win10 pc has been quite slow over the last few months, sometimes worse than others.

it’s worst when moving windows, opening new chrome tabs, etc.
task manager shows <10% utilisation across everything, disk, ram, gpu, cpu.

last year i rebuilt it into a smaller case with a riser cable. the cable has a few creases, like a improperly fitted sheet.

it’s usually better if i shut down, switch psu off, wait a min and turn it back on. it’ll be good for half an hour before degrading again.

it runs as slow as a windows 95 pc, where it’ll take 60 seconds to load a webpage.

(300mbps internet. i7 7700k, gtx1070, so these aren’t the issue haha)

Ah any ssd in it?

#

@mild solar ? Do you have a ssd in the pc?

mild solar
#

yes, 1tb m.2 for boot, plus 2 other drives

#

i added that a couple years ago, issues are within the last 2 or so months

grizzled cloak
#

Ok what did you add in those last 2 months?

#

Any big changes?

mild solar
#

no modifications, but i have moved house twice

Any hdd in the pc?

mild solar

i’ve been through and reseated memory, gpu and riser cable plugs.

Unwound check what’s set on startup on taskmgr

#

Disable what you don’t need

#

And go into msconfig (type this in windows flag menu) or win flag key + R and type in msconfig

There should be a tab called services and make sure to check hide all Microsoft services

#

Well check msconfig as well

everything will slow.
i was just finishing a coding assignment, wing101 was slow when changing to and from it, chrome was impossibly slow, chatgpt was thinking slower than i do

#

which was all i had open, anyway

#

oh and spotify, which would ‘glitch’ out when there were spikes of “slowness”
but there was no change to task manager

grizzled cloak
#

What do you check in taskmgr?

#

Cpu wise that seems not heavy

mild solar
#

watching the graphs, everything was below 15%

grizzled cloak
#

Is it a laptop?

mild solar
#

pc

grizzled cloak
#

Do all these things require internet?

mild solar
#

no,
it’s when moving windows around the desktop, when interacting with tabs, opening new ones

grizzled cloak
#

That’s ram related

#

Either that or the hdd is dying whoa

mild solar
#

well i can unplug the hdd but nothing i use interacts with it

grizzled cloak
#

Try it and see if it acts better

#

Usually the pc will act slow in this matter

#

If this is not the case it can be a background program

#

But rather just want to make sure it’s not the hdd first

i’ve unplugged the hdd, startup it’s running fine but usually takes a while. power cycled it anyway.

startup apps are chrome: wallpaper engine, corsair cue, nvidia helpers, windows defaults
