Unplug your PC from the wall, hold the power button down for 30 seconds. After that, clear your CMOS.

wet seal
#

So when you try and start it, nothing happnes right?

#

It's just dead?

grand bobcat
#

yes

#

just dead

#

no sound no led nothing

wet seal
#

Okay, unplug the frontpanel connection for the powerbutton and try booting it with a screwdriver.

grand bobcat
#

nope

wet seal
#

Hmm... Okay so we know the powerbutton isn't shorted then.

#

Right now my money is on the PSU but I want to be sure, could you remove it from your system completely and try jump starting it?

grand bobcat
#

i don't know how

wet seal
#

You don't know how to jump start it?

grand bobcat
#

no

wet seal
#

Watch this video

#

Basic idea is to completely remove the PSU from your computer, have nothing connected to it.

#

Use the paperclip, put the connector down on a non conductive surface, plug the PSU into the wall and flick the switch.

tawny ravine
#

if you have all black wires

#

clip towards you

#

bridge pin 3/4 from the right

wet seal
tawny ravine
#

wait why

wet seal
#

pin 4 to 5

tawny ravine
#

thats green/black

#

lmao both work

wet seal
#

yeah brain fart, green to ground

tawny ravine
#

ground on both sides

#

of green

wet seal
#

yeah I get it

#

I just follow the 4 to 5 rule

grand bobcat
#

the power supplies fan should trun on?

tawny ravine
#

yes

tawny ravine
#

if you dont have some efficient model

#

bs

grand bobcat
#

it's 80 bronze plus

#

and fan is not turning on

tawny ravine
#

maybe the psu then

wet seal
#

It's Asus TUF Gaming 650W

tawny ravine
#

do you have an extra?

wet seal
#

So it mostly like means that the PSU is in fact dead

grand bobcat
#

wait

#

fan turns on then stops

tawny ravine
#

oh

#

thats normal

grand bobcat
#

no PSU is ok?

wet seal
#

yeah

tawny ravine
#

it has the fan stop

wet seal
#

it's a pretty good indication that the PSU seems to be working fine

#

Ideally you would use a multimeter to see if you're getting the correct voltages to the 24-pin connector

#

But I think it's safe to say that your PSU isn't the problem here

grand bobcat
#

so mobo?

wet seal
#

Try reseating all the power connectors first

#

maybe you just had a bad connection

tawny ravine
#

do you have a photo of the pc btw?

grand bobcat
#

Here is the video when it turned on

tawny ravine
#

@grand bobcat so wait

#

it can turn on sometimes???

grand bobcat
#

yes

#

if i do not connect gpu power

tawny ravine
#

@wet seal

grand bobcat
#

it might turn on

wet seal
#

It might turn on without the graphics card?

grand bobcat
#

yes

wet seal
#

That could still imply a PSU issue

tawny ravine
#

its a 3070 on a 650w psu

#

i mean

grand bobcat
#

is it too much?

tawny ravine
#

not on its own

#

i dont have the time to make a pcpartpicker list to see what it says

#

650 can pass but its really recommended to have 750+

#

that being said it might not be the psu still

grand bobcat
#

worse case senario i have to take all 3 (psu, mobo, gpu) to service center 😦

tawdry pilot
#

have you tried clearing cmos yet

grand bobcat
#

yes i cleared the CMOS

wet seal
grand bobcat
#

any guesses?

#

mobo
PSU
GPU

tawny ravine
#

Probably the GPU

#

Seeing that it sometimes turns on

#

But it's also very possible that it's a motherboard issue

#

I'm not great at diagnosing stuff

wet seal
#

Take the graphics card out of your system entirely

#

If you're able to boot your PC just fine without the graphics card in your system it means one of two possibilities

#
  1. The most likely reason is that the PSU simply isn't able to supply enough power through a single cable. Use two separate cables to power the graphics card.
#
  1. The graphics card is shorted and is triggering the overcurrent protection on your powersupply
grand bobcat
#

i am using 2 separate cables

wet seal
#
  1. The PSU has somehow given up the ghost (PCI-E power rail is f'd for example.)
tawny ravine
#

I only see one

wet seal
#

Two separate cables

tawny ravine
#

Ah

#

Cool

#

@grand bobcat have you tried taking the GPU completely out

grand bobcat
#

Yes

#

Still its not Turing on

#

Turning *

wet seal
#

Okay thanks, that narrows it down

#

So it's not a graphics card related issue, we're back to square one

#

either it's the motherboard or the PSU

#

Since we managed to jumpstart the PSU just fine, I'm leaning towards declaring mobo as the culprit here

tawny ravine
#

Does the i5 12400 have built-in graphics

tawny ravine
#

I'm a ryzen guy in most of my desktops

#

Servers on the other hand all use Xeon

grand bobcat
#

Once i tried to connect power to gpu

One was ok when i tried to connect second one psu stopped working

#

I have a multimeter

tawny ravine
#

Try to see if you can just plug in that first cable and daisy chain both of the connectors onto the GPU which isn't recommended but you can do for testing

wet seal
#

Nah, I've heard enough

#

It's the powersupply

tawny ravine
#

@grand bobcat like he said I would try to see if you can get The power supply swapped out

#

And if you really want to play it safe and you said that your motherboard is still under warranty you could try to reach out and see if they would replace it but unless you can prove that it's actually the motherboard I don't think they'll just swap it

#

So start with the PSU

wet seal
#

You can RMA both, they'll test them either way.

grand bobcat
#

GPU is fine right?

tawny ravine
#

Unless you somehow broke it when you plugged in the PSU

#

I doubt that it's broken

grand bobcat
#

i can RMA both, i think
as both are from different vendor

wet seal
#

Yeah the GPU is fine, everything you've described so far points at the PSU being the culprit here

grand bobcat
#

ok

#

Thanks everyone

#

will try to RMA mobo

tawny ravine
#

This is why I like being a field technician and not a repair guy

#

I get told what to do instead of having to diagnose stuff

wet seal
#

@grand bobcat RMA the PSU

grand bobcat
#

i don't want this to happen frequently

#

i just bought a UPS

wet seal
#

If you don't want any issues with the PSU, invest in a good quality powersupply from Seasonic, Silverstone or Super Flower

grand bobcat
#

unfortunately they don't sell in india

wet seal
#

Prime PSUs from Seasonic are pretty expensive but they're very good in quality and offer 12 years of warranty

grand bobcat
#

silverstone are good right?

wet seal
# grand bobcat

Those Seasonic PSUs are all very bad, don't buy either of those

grand bobcat
wet seal
#

The Decathlon PSUs are very good

#

Strider Essentials are pretty solid

#

But not all of them are good, the ones on this page are all good

grand bobcat
#

Just an update, it was GPU

#

just received the RMA'ed GPU, now it's working fine
