there's a different crowd that hangs out there and you're more likely to get input
i assume theres no way to move a post is there?
no
ah well, copy paste it is then
but the short answer is yes - upgrade to at least 16 GB
what does memory actually affect
All kinds of things! It's where programs store their short-term knowledge. Things like Chrome and games suck up a ton. When it gets full, everything slows down, as that short-term knowledge needs to be offloaded onto the much slower SSD/HDD (known as a page file)
16GB is the expected norm these days, especially considering how RAM-heavy most websites are
so youd say upgrading to 16gb from 8gb stock would be considerably noticeable, even if im just using firefox and various art and/or doc programs?
im planning to run fedora linux on the notebook so i dont expect to game on it, at least not to a serious extend
i assume its similar to resolution, where upgrading, even with double the power will get less and less noticeable the higher you go
8 to 16 is a significant jump, and yeah for most cases it wouldn't make much sense to go 32 on your system
so you would still say that its a good choice, and that im not capped by the cpu
With a lot of firefox tabs & docs open, take a look at your task manger and see how much ram is being used
cause it tends to sometimes slow down to the extend where windows just freeze due to loading
The CPU is most certainly holding you back, but replacing that means replacing the whole laptop.
Swapping the RAM is multitudes cheaper while still providing a boost to performance, regardless of the CPU
windows just freeze due to loading
Sounds like it's struggling read/write to the pagefile
yeah id expect that. even suprised i can replace ram and battery as easy as it is
When that happens, definitely take a look at task manager. I'm guessing the ram is filled up
tbf part of that had to do with a broken battery, basically it jumped from 50% to (literally)0% and that tended to make the entire system freeze up for at least 5secs
oh yeah true, didnt even consider that
gotta figure out how to do that in linux first tho xD
