#Best way to automate new system setup?

I recently got a new ssd and decided to reset my system and do a setup from scratch, installing everything manually etc. I was wondering if there is a better/automated way to do this.

I know there are websites like ninite, but I think it leaves out configs and it also only has its own selection of programs.

Is there a better way of doing this? Would it potentially be better to make a system image right after I do a clean install and set everything up, then when I have to set up a new system I can just restore from that image? I'm getting a new laptop and I want to try this out. If anyone has any other ideas let me know. Thanks.

Probably not the answer you wanna hear, but I think you're better off not doing anything like that

You run the risk of carrying over sub-optimal configurations that put an unnecessary burden on your new machine

I've heard that you want to start from a clean system, but I thought that since #1 is pretty close to a clean system it would be fine?

If the system image is taken very soon after a fresh install/app download/settings tweak, then I think (1) is a solid choice.

That's what companies do

ah nice

might try it out then

Well yeah that's a solid move then. Lots of companies keep a few sys images like that for various roles, so speed up mass installation

btw it's fine with doing it in virtualbox right?

Distributors like CDW even accept OS images to preinstall before even shipping to the workplace/employee (that's how my current work macbook was shipped)

since I'm not gonna wipe my system but I don't have somewhere to do a clean install

ok ty

That should be fine

If the VM was installing onto a bare drive, then yes absolutely, but I'm not 100% certain it's the same case for a virtual disk/iso on an existing drive

I would be surprised if it was any different tho, go for it!
