#PC Upgrade, need some guidance.

So this is an entirely new build?
Or an upgrade from existing
If existing, what's your current part list
16gb ddr4, coolermaster hyper 212, MSI z390 a pro, i5 9600k, 1070ti, and a junker 650 watt PSU
and some full atx coolermaster case from 2016 that I bought for cheap
Hmmmm
So the issue here is, you're in a good spot to upgrade right now. But that's going to cost you if you want current gen tech
Because you're basically building a new PC at this point
If you want DDR5 you need to upgrade your RAM, Mobo, and CPU
pretty much yeah, would you say the jump from ddr4 to ddr5 is even worthwhile at this point? and as someone that's never used AM5, or even ddr5 memory, I assume it's not backwards compatible?
DDR5 is not backwards compat with DDR4
If you want DDR5 you need a DDR5 board
You can get next gen CPU with DDR4 memory
But you'll need Intel for that b/c afaik AMD doesn't support DDR4 on 7000 CPUs
You also don't need X670 chipset if you're on such a tight budget
Let me put together a parts list rq and see what I can work out
@knotty topaz Thank you so much
also I know I can skimp on the noctua cooler and just go full white and brown, it was just a rough build to start. Likely going to incrementally buy parts one by one and slowly throw it all together over the next two months
@coral compass What resolution is your monitor?
1080p
6600 XT it is
Part List - Intel Core i5-12600K, Radeon RX 6600 XT
If someone else could look this over and make sure I didn't mess it up
Lol
I think that's pretty solid
👎
Okay are you going to just thumbs down it or actually explain what I did wrong lmao
Canadian dollars
That's a nice PSU from a brand I trust
there are cheaper equally good units
I never ever cheap out on my PSU
Just using the cooler the guy had in his list
I do agree the 6600 XT is a bit much
It's the least expensive on Partpicker though
availability is just weird at times, the 6650xt is cheaper
whats your budget? im assuming you're reusing your case and storage?
yes, budget isn't hard fixed because I'll be buying parts over time, just needing a more budget friendly build that I can throw money into in the future if need be.
I'd like to keep it around 1250-1350
Also probably a good bet to just keep your DDR4 to keep things inexpensive
Cheaper mobo and Intel 12th gen is a good idea
Then when you're ready for DDR5 you have options, since you'll need a mobo+CPU+RAM anyways
or just avoid all of that and hop on AM5
AM5 is super expensive and not worth it rn
Plus you need DDR5
Which would easily put him out of the $1350 range
Another $120 for a new RAM Kit, an extra $50 to $100 on the mobo, an extra $50 on the CPU
wild take
drop the overpriced cooler and mobo and it's easily doable within the same budget, would have more performance, and would put him on a new socket

picked cheaper alternatives for some parts and squeezed in a 6750xt, which is close to a 3070 in raster
Part List - AMD Ryzen 5 7600, Radeon RX 6750 XT
the 7600 doesnt need a dual tower cooler so there could be some money saved there
realistically you could even just reuse your 212 if you have the am4 bracket (cross compatible with am5)
https://www.amazon.ca/Thermalright-Refroidisseur-ventilateur-dissipateur-technologie/dp/B0BN9ZFZ2X/
this cooler instead of the FT120 actually, the price isnt indexed in pcpp for some reason
on par with the nh-d15
the ps120 is also on canada amazon for 45 (also the price index thing happens alot with the pa/s120
also you could go matx
yeah i think its cause thermalright has like 5 product pages for each cooler 😭
what even is the ft120
i assumed he needed wifi and the cheapest ATX one wasnt much more than the cheapest MATX one
but if he doesnt need wifi there are cheaper options for sure
frost tower!
on paper the fans are better than the pa/ps 's
but all of their dual towers perform within margin of eachother afaik
I don't need wifi but it's a nicety to have, likely moving out of my current place within the next year so I'd rather have the flexibility depending on the setup 🙂
I can't come across it right now, pretty sure they're kicking somewhere but I will keep this in mind, pretty sure it came with an AM3 bracket, hoping it's compatible.
you'll need an am4 bracket unfortunately
damn, ill have to check when im back in alberta, I appreciate it though.
