#External SSD for Games

And yes, steam lets you add a library from any storage connected to your computer
If internal drive isn't an option, I think the move here would be an M.2 nvme caddy, so you can install it into a computer later on
It is a laptop
ah, should i keep the ssd plugged in 24/7 (when i get one)?
i would be only installing games like RDR2 that i wont play often
You don’t need it in all the time, just when you’re using steam
ah ok, do you got any specific models / brands of ssd that you recommend?
I did find an SSD that MAY work
Experience high-speed, no-lag PC gaming with FireCuda Gaming SSD, an external portable USB-C drive harnessing fierce FireCuda NVMe SSD performance and cutting-edge USB 3. 2 Gen 2x2 technology for speeds of up to 2000MB/s. Store a massive library of games and customize the built-in RGB LED lights ...
ihavent heard good stuff or had good experiences with amazon though
if i buy the 500GB one, will i have exactly 500GB
i would need steps to do it
@sweet tree
No, more like 465
why
i wouldnt be installing windows on it
unless i had to
Formatting, and windows using Gibibytes instead of gigibytes, for whatever reason
Also drives will reserve some space to start using when the NAND wears down
Generally, Samsung drives are truthful to their advertised storage
For adding a steam library folder? Google it, silly goose!
oh
is seagate a good brand
and amazon a good place to buy
and i do have a USB type C port on my laptop
Yes
Probably
ah ok
do you think 500GB is enough?
I'd be installing RDR2, TF2, Apex, Fortnite and some other ones
Ideally id like to store photos on there too but im buying it for steam games so not a good combo
No, I think you should get at least 1TB. If you think you’ll be on top of its wearing out, you can get one for $50 USD
what do you mean by ontop of its wearing out
Well, an internal m.2 ssd
i got a laptop
Ssds wear out over time, and the cheaper ones have a different type of NAND that has a lower right endurence
oh
i wouldnt really know if it wears out
im just the kind of person who logs onto my PC and launches a game and does nothing else really
i want something that can take good use eg. lots of writes and reads, something that if it falls off my desk or something its not gonna break right away
Crystal disk info tells the health of the drives
should i usei t
You do not need to worry about it wearing out
oh
It's only an issue if you're constantly adding/overwriting new data to the drive
what about my internal SSD in my laptop
Yeah, for a while anyway
CrystalDiskInfo is a nice tool to have anyways, but you're probably fine
It’s probably not an issue tho yeah
i went through a phase that i scanned 100 antivirus scans per day and download / reinstall stuff always
i had to reinstall windows every couple days so that would have did some writes and reads to the drive
That's awful
yeah im a very paranoid person
Why do that to yourself lol
just because i kept getting viruses
Yeah don't worry dude, it's fine
Stop going to sketchy sites you goober
im not going to any sketchy sites though
dont want to get into some big story but i was stupid and fell for lots of scams
for the SSD in that link, do i need a case or something to hold it in to protect it or is it laying on my desk fine
It's solid state, it's a tough lil guy
and it wont cause too much heat?
sturdy aluminum enclosure offers cooling and heat dissipation for extended reliability
you'll be fine bud, don't overthink this
will i have to worry about optimizing it
like my main SSD i use defrag and optimize drives
alright
gonna order it and hope it goes good
SSDs do not require defragging
but the windows tool optimizes them
Doesn't matter
oh
Don't overthink this
on an older laptop that i had it said my disk was 4% fragmented but it was from 2010 or something with an HDD
That's because it's an HDD, all that means is it'll be a bit slower
That's just cuz it's an HDD
oh
you do think that the one i linked is a good choice and priced decent?
my budget is around 100 USD, a bit over and under doesnt mind me,
You can get an internal SSD for half the price
You sure your laptop doesn't support a swappable SSD?
How do you do that line thing
Ah, interesting, thank you
More acturately, DO NOT DEFRAG YOUR SSD! It will needlessly add read/write cycles to the NAND. Plus, the ssds controller writes to different parts of the drive to keep the read/write cycles as low as possible
@tight solar
yes
Honestly I didn't even know windows let you do that
sorry
I forgive you
yea but i want external
what about windows built in optimize and defrag drives
would it prevent defragging
I'm pretty certain it just doesn't do it to SSDs
oh
Ssds will optimize thenselves
ok but as long as im not using some sketchy 3rd party one i should be safe from that
oh
so should i turn off defrag and optimzie drives schedule
I've never optimized my drives (all SSD) and haven't had any issues, it's not really necessary
That's because it's a volume 😛
Ssds are already so fast, that any optimization that windows might try to do would have little to no effect on performance
ah, understandable
As a wise man once said
Don't overthink this
also going against what i was going to do earlier (use the SSD ill order for games only), would it be a bad idea if i stored files on there aswell if i got a 1TB and had space left
You can quite literally store whatever you want on an ssd, as long as you’re not copying lots of files while gaming
Refer to my last comment
yea i was just asking because i would get a separate SSD for storing those files if it was a big issue
