Hi everyone, hoping someone might be able to help me here. I've been able to boot and install Windows but having RAM trouble. Details below:

Build details:

  • Used MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus
  • Ryzen 5 5600
  • 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro SL DDR4-3600 CL18
  • Stock cooler
  • Nvidia GTX1060 6GB

Symptoms:

  • CPU EZDebug light stuck on any time 2 sticks of RAM are plugged
  • System will not boot

Troubleshooting steps already tried:

  • Only use 8GB RAM in Slot 2A (system boots, ram stuck at 2133MHz)
  • Swap which DIMM is in which slot (no change)
  • Remove all components but CPU/RAM (no change)
  • Reseat CPU (no change)
  • Remove all but one DIMM (boots)
  • Replace DIMM with other one to see if problem follows DIMM (boots)

Any help would be appreciated!!

@queen ridge together, they came as a 2x8 kit

@trim verge Have you tried one stick of RAM in other slots or just 2A?

trim verge
#

Just 2A

toxic plinth
#

Try in the other slots, make sure there's not a dead slot or something

trim verge
#

Actually I did also try 1A&1B

#

As a pair

You haven't mentioned resetting your BIOS aka clearing CMOS. You should try that, then boot with one stick, then boot with both

trim verge
#

Whoops sorry I wrote this late last night and missed that. Tried clearing CMOS and just this morning reflashed the latest BIOS

#

One new development though

#

I can boot with 2 sticks in the two closest slots to the CPU (2A and whatever the other one is)

#

If I put a stick in either of the further two slots I get stuck at CPU led

toxic plinth
#

It's possible one of the RAM slots is dead

trim verge
#

Shit

#

I tried every combo of slots besides both far ones. Only scenarios that work are the first 2 slots

#

However the rgb on the sticks always comes on if that matters

#

Don't have another CPU or Mobo to test unfortunately

#

It doesn't seem to be the ram itself

toxic plinth
#

You should try 1 stick in each slot and see if they all work

trim verge
#

Only have the 2 sticks unfortunately. Unless you want me to grab some ddr3 ECC ram lol

toxic plinth
#

Nono I mean booting up with 1 stick

#

But trying that 1 stick in every slot

trim verge
#

Ahh yep tried that

toxic plinth
#

Do they all work?

trim verge
#

Only works with first 2 slots

toxic plinth
#

Well there you go, last 2 slots are dead

trim verge
#

Oof. Question is... Is that the mobo or CPU with the dead slots? Since it's an entire memory channel is it possible it's a bad memory controller on the CPU?

toxic plinth
#

Could be either, no way to know unless you have another CPU/Mobo you can try

trim verge
#

Also can't apply XMP or faster clocks to the ram when it is detected

#

Damn. Which is more likely? The motherboard was scuffed up when I got it but the traces all looked ok. CPU is new off Amazon

toxic plinth
#

Used motherboard

trim verge
#

Damn

#

That's more of a pain to fix but makes sense

toxic plinth
#

Unfortunately that means no dual channel

trim verge
#

Yep. Not too happy with the board anyway, think I'll return it

#

One last thought... Why does the debug led indicate CPU then? Just where it got in the boot process or is that where it thinks the fault is?

toxic plinth
#

Does the LED give more details than "CPU"?

trim verge
#

Nope :/

#

That's my only indicator that it's possibly a bad memory controller on the CPU

toxic plinth
#

Could be, although shipped from Amazon don't tend to be faulty. When you get the chance, pull it out and inspect its pins and the motherboard socket for signs of damage

trim verge
#

Yep, I'll do that next. And agreed that's unlikely

#

Pins looked good on install and socket did too. Maybe I seated it wrong?

toxic plinth
#

Also possible, but also unlikely

#

Could also be not enough mounting pressure

#

Although again, not likely

trim verge
#

Fair. I tightened the cooler pins in a cross pattern (loosely tightened each corner then went top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left) to apply even pressure

#

I'm gonna reach out to the ebay seller for the mobo
