#temp spikes on an i7-13700k

Hello, I just built a new PC. It has a core i7-13700k, rx580, 32gb of corsair ram, 800w psu and 360ml aio. I'm using the lian li o11 case with 10 fans (including the aio fans). everything is stock, when idle the temps usually between 49c-60c (I'm not sure if this is supposed to be normal) with a frequent temp spike going up to the 90s, as soon as I start any game the temp stay at 100~ for a few seconds then it drops back to 70c-90c. I'm really worried if any of my components are faulty or am I doing something wrong.

feel free to ask questions.

Did you use enough thermal paste on the CPU?

#

and is it mounted tightly?

glass fjord
#

yeah I made sure of it a few days ago, when the problem was still present I tried reapplying the thermal paste today and still

grand sequoia

Hmmm

13700K and 13900K are the kind of beasts that are difficult to cool, but a 360mm AIO should be alright though

glass fjord
#

what temps should i be expecting with a 360 aio?

ember kelp
#

the cpu is going to push itself until it hits 90°C I think, that's just how the turbo works

#

That sounds hot, but it's nothing to worry about really

glass fjord
#

couldnt this be a result of a broken aio tho ?

ember kelp
#

I don't think so, if the AIO didn't work you'd crash your comp in 10 seconds

#

automatic cpu shutdown due to overheating

#

13th gen. highend chips just use a lot of power, and run hot

glass fjord
#

but would it be spiking in this way?

#

i feel like its supposed to rise gradually ?

ember kelp
#

yeah it would, it spikes until it hits some threshold temp, then tunes itself down a little to get back down in temps I think

glass fjord
#

and even so the amount of spikes in one minute is strange

Watercooling takes time to reach its maximum temperature.

#

Also if it throttles the temp will go lower

#

so it can be it goes to 100 c and throttles back 🤷‍♂️

ember kelp
#

sensors might not even pick up the 100°C temp, the clockspeeds go up and down a thousand times per second or more

#

and sensors pick up the average

glass fjord
#

should i consider under volting the cpu then ?

ember kelp
#

You could try that, yep, it'd lower power consumption and heat

#

even a small undervolt would help

#

but I don't think you need to, yours seems to be working as expected right now

#

But if you want to play around with the voltages, download Intel XTU, it's their overclocking tool

glass fjord
#

then i should be expecting the temperature to hover around the 60-80 range under load if the aio is working probably

ember kelp
#

LTT had a video about the 13900K a while ago, about how you cannot cool it enough for full performance, using regular methods

#

13700K probably isn't far behind

glass fjord
#

im bit paranoid since it my first build, apoligies for that

ember kelp
#

when you draw like 250W+ and burn all of it off as heat in an area the size of a fingernail.. yeah, cooling is an issue

#

It's alright, but I think your cpu and cooler are both working fine

glass fjord
#

alright then i appreciate your help, thanks a lot !

ember kelp
#

try the undervolt thing though if you like, with XTU

#

something like -0.2V should help a little already

glass fjord
#

will do 👍

ember kelp
#

umm no, scratch that

glass fjord
#

?

ember kelp
#

-0.020V :)

glass fjord
#

should be a good starting point

ember kelp
#

if the normal voltage is around 1.2V, it's a tiny undervolt

glass fjord
#

this is my core voltage rn, shouldnt it be around 1.35~ ?

#

1.7???

ember kelp
#

I don't know what the baseline is for 13th gen, sorry

#

seems high though

no i havent updated the bios

glass fjord
#

just updated the bios to the latest version, still seem to be running into the same problem

vapid cairn
#

that's intel for ya

#

using default cooler or got a beefy one?

glass fjord
#

360ml aio

#

But what i dont get is the constant increase and decrease in the core

#

Like one second it would be on 1.47

#

Then it drops to 0.9

#

Then back to 1.2

#

It doesn’t make any sense

ember kelp
#

It's boosting and using the available thermal headroom, nothing weird about that

#

and if it doesn't have a high priority job, toggles itself back down again

#

it's what intel cpus have been doing for the past 10 years

glass fjord
#

If so should I be worried when the temperature keep rising to 100c and dipping back ?

ember kelp
#

not really, unless you're constantly at 90+ degrees

#

just saying it again, but the 13700K is sort of an untamed beast when it comes to thermals

#

it can easily overwhelm your cooling, so it's constantly limiting itself, going back and forth the thermal envelope

glass fjord
#

Thank you all for your help been going at it for a week now but seems like everything is under control !

Someone I recommended it to in this server dropped their 13600k temps by 20C.
