Hey, so I changed a few setting in my bios being I increased my RAM frequency from 3600mhz to 3800mhz and I enabled a feature called “resize BAR”. I have an Asus rog strix b550-f gaming Wi-Fi edition. Any help on what it is? My pc just wouldn’t post, then it did and now I get a blue screen maybe 5 seconds after booting into windows.

Let me check
I found info that says 3200 and info that says 3600. It worked on 3600 before however.
what ram are u using?
G.skill ripjaws v 16gb (8gb x 2)
I'm assuming it's probs a 3200mt/s jdec spec and 3600xmp/expo kit
and 3800 is probs out of spec for this one
It refused to boot on anything above 3800 but crashed on 3800
usually there's a label on the box it came in, there should be mt/s and timings info on that
Stick says 3600
in cpuz or hwinfo u should get more detailed spec, sorta like this ^
and the xmp/expo settings that the ram came with
I’ll do that in a sec just gonna put my ram back in lol
also what's the rest of ur build? just in case it's a rebar issue
CPU-Z is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system :
Processor name and number, codename, process, package, cache levels.
Mainboard and chipset.
Memory type, size, timings, and module specifications (SPD).
Real time measurement of each core's internal frequency, memory frequency.
T...
Cpu is Ryzen 7 5800x, gpu is 3080ti FE
should be fine then imo, are ur drivers/bios updated?
what's the spd page like?
idk
srry pressed enter too soon
yeah it's a 3600 kit, imo just stick with the xmp/expo default
so 3600?
yeah
i wonder if i could get aqway with 3660 😈
there should just be a expo/docp toggle in bios settings, shouldn't have to manually adjust anything
i set it to auto once and it gave me 2100
technically u can probs get away with 3800 but that's ur call on how much time u want to put into getting familiar with ram oc and adjusting voltage/timings
would it really be worth it?
for most cases I just toggle xmp on and call it a day since the most u will probs get out of it is maybe 3% more perf and in real world results, like 5fps or something
it's not something u can even notice anyways
unless ur doing memory intensive conpression/decompression and that's literally ur work and ur making money out of ur pc and the 3-5% gains will make u money faster lol
lol
i was wondering since recently my computer has been performing noiceably worse and idk why
how long have u had the pc?
ooh maybe like a year and a half? maybe 2? i dont know wxactly
could be dust buildup/paste drying out if u use it a lot daily
if it's been abt 2yrs probs a good time to repaste
i was using the default paste on my cooler lol, i got some noctua stuff but never applied it
how are the temps/perf under load? idk if u kept benchmark numbers from when it's new
usually I do a full bench suite with a new system and that way I have references to go back to for troubleshooting and warranty reasons, not sure if u kept any
i didnt
it was my first build i didnt think about that
but an example would be like in a game like fortnite i could go medium settings and get 200+ fps and now i can barely hit 90
oh wtf that's like a lot lol
yea
which game is that
fortnite
not too familiar with it, did the game change a lot since then?
i knew perf would drop form the update to the new unreal engine but i wasnt expecting that much
if anything the game should be better optimized after 2yrs but idk abt fortnite lol
idk, they switched to unreal 5 and i started using DX12 not long ago but thats about it really
I play apex a lot and they recently did a big overhaul to dx12 and dx12 ultimate compatible and now the game runs at 240fps pinned lol
my fans seemed a little quieter recently under load but i havbe no idea as to why
dx12 and ue5 should help with frame time consistency if anything tbh
hmm probs time to dust out/clean and repaste
but dust/paste alone shouldn't half ur perf tho so probs still something to do with fortnite
did u notice any issues with other games/programs?
its not just that game
in generaly i have a decrease in performance
im worried about repasting tho as i have an AIO and i dont wanna mess it up
how is the aio mounted
top
should be fine then pump wise, if u mounted pump up top, it could have been the pump dying over time from bubbles
any hardware changes since new?
shouldn't be an issue either tbh
This is my mount for aio
let me check
anythign specific you want me to use to check? like a benchmark or something or just try laoding a game
what's the case? is it a mesh version of phanteks Px00?
cinebench if u have it or any game u play
like hop into a firing range or something
its a phanteks p500a i think
is it the mesh version?
first pic
they used to do a solid front which is horrible for airflow
yeah but p500 mesh is a great case tbh so shouldn't be a airflow issue
just pop open the sensors for hwinfo too so u can see the power draw as well sorta like this
I’ll have to do it again after downloading hwinfo, I downloaded cpuz
Cpuz says max TDP for cpu is 105 if that helps
tdp doesn't really cover the actual usuage since just about any cpus since the early core series goes over the tdp
Ok
How many passes does this thing do
Also idk if this is related but my gpu fans turned off completely
I’m at 100% cpu usage lol
yeah that's sorta the benchmark tbh lol
Yea it’s just never been that high before
just grab a screenshot like this
with temps/frequency/power
Ok new benchmark with that setting off
now im downloding hwinfo
Alright it’s going
it's about 1k pts below average, do u have any oc or is it running stock rn?
aight gonna look into it, brb
ok
i am gonna look at a tutorial on how to not screw up the rescrewing in of my cooler
oh i am so lucky my paste came with wipes
maybe the pts difference is my thermal paste
looked into it and it looks like it should be able to hit 4.5ghz all core and be at about 120w instead of 80w and 4.2
also doesn't look like it's a temp issue since peak is like 45c
do u have pbo on in bios?
What is that just to refresh my mind
precision boost overdrive, amd's auto oc kinda thing
I’ll check in a second when my benchmark finishes
Btw do you have a recommended pattern for thermal paste? The box says 5 dots but I saw only one elsewhere
yeah single core takes a while
tbh pattern doesn't really matter as long as it covers the whole ihs
tbh when I do it I just go in with my finger and spread it over the whole thing
but dots, crosses, :) all works lol
Would it go over the cpu when I put my cooler on tho?
Like spread to motherboard itself
shouldn't be an issue unless u unloaded the whole tube
hmm that's a bit lower than average too
what are the options under the drop down menu?
Varies
Some say auto, disable or enable, some also add manual, some only have auto and manual, some are auto only
yeah the auto default should be fine
I can set a max temp for my cpu?
yeah, usually no need to tho since the cpu already has a tjmax temp set
hmm honestly probs best to take this to #overclocking tho since I'm not too familiar with amd oc settings, more an intel guy lol
but yeah auto for pbo works
if u didn't change anything just exit bios works
just give them the rundown and post the cinebench/hwinfo pics and others should be able to help with overclocking since u have a lot of temp headroom and the benchmark scores are below average
fans are ur own preference tbh, if u don't mind the extra noise turbo is gonna give the best cooling
Maybe my gpu is the problem for the low performance?
we can take a look at that too, do u have 3dmark?
Not yet but I can get it
should be on steam, forgot how much it is tho
Oh it’s not free
furmark works too and that sould be free
I’ll do that
yeah 3dmark works a lot better since it gives a good breakdown of frequencty/load/temps and other data
I don’t have $35 lol
but furmark and hwinfo works as well for free, just not in as nice a package
Ok
Shoidl I set the resolution to my monitor or soenthing else
here what do i select?
default works
so 720?
yup
wait till the temp curve is more or less flat and see what the max temp is
oh that works too
cool
i wonder if something is stopping my fans from spinning up
they stay constant all the time, including gpu fan pretty much
try getting hwinfo open at the same time so u can track power and and rest of the specs
and get a pic of the test itself
do i hit gpu stress test instead of the preset? maybe then it wont be fullscreen?
ahaha
got it
oh, yeah that
still climbing a little ill sned the final one too
do i stop it whenever or what?
yeah when it's near flat
ok i stopped it, max temp was 76.5 celcius
aight grab a screenshot of that and can u also run the 1440 preset once
it neverm showed a final windows after
do you want 1440 for my monitor aspect ratio or just standard
yeah that's fine, just the test window works like u had it here
standard
I wish my fans would start up more they are on idle speeds it seems like
the gpu fans?
Yea
They are either off or on the same speed always
same with my case fans and cpu fans
same speed
always
which sku is ur gpu?
its founders
grab afterburner and u can adjust the fancurver there
idk if nvidia made one, I just skip all their bloatware tbh
haven't touched geforce experience since like 2019
i can change temperature target
and they require sign in for it now just to collect telemetry
yeah u can change the fancurve from there
what should i do to it
what is it like rn?
idk i dont see a curve adjustment specifically outside of my bios
oh it should show in afterburner
man, i love this pc but, some of this stuff is just plain easier to do on my macbook
i have like 50 software on this thing just for each part and each control cuz nobody can work together apparently
yeah that the one thing I miss abt my 2012mbp lmao, stuff just works (worked in this case but it's like 11yrs old)
i have one app on there to see temps, adjust fan speeds, and everything, where on here i need 50 things that are impossible to remove
why is afterburner installing 3 other programs
ok i have it
along with whatever else it just did
the monitoring side of afterburner is a side program
yeah sorta a mess
but it works
apparently u didn't have a game that needed the version of direct x that afterburner runs on https://linustechtips.com/topic/1459440-msi-afterburner-installing-directx/
Linus Tech Tips
Im trying to install msi afterburner but when i do it starts intalling directx too, is that normal?
yeah just launch it and go into settings
what version does it use?
not too sure tbh
ok im in setting
https://www.reddit.com/r/MSI_Gaming/comments/l7q34i/rtssmsi_afterburner_osd_doen_not_working_because/
https://steamcommunity.com/app/49520/discussions/0/540743128694345588/?l=norwegian
apparently runs on dx 9 lol, it is really old so ig that works lol
i already had that version lol. i guess it just didnt like it for some reason
anyway how do i use this thing
oh that's the voltage crv
Linus Tech Tips
This is the 960 that I have in my secondary desktop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013LDXPFO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 If I check the box in MSI Afterburner for "enable user defined automatic fan control" it shows what's in the pictures which I assume is the current/defa...
something like this
u can bump it up or down depending on if ur ok with the noise or not and also for perf
basically like if u want more perf/lower temp bump it higher, or if u hate fan noise bring it down a bit
if i do this what will happen
it's gonna be really noisy ig but it technically works
so in this case, with temps from 0-40 it's gonna use 50% fan and ramp up from there as defined by the crv
ok
its pretty quiet so ig thats good. if i usually get to 75 celcius under load should i up my speed a little?
yeah that works
yup that works
ima try the furmark again
It’s definitely not getting as hot now
It’s stopping at like 65 so far and slowly going up
Very slowly
nice
1440 btw
it barely got louder but it is way cooler
thats good
only 1 extra fps tho
yeah that does look quite a bit better temp wise, hotspot went from 102 to 95
yeah hit up #overclocking and they should be able to help
do you think its the armoury crate stuff stopping the fans from spinning up
the asus utility thing?
yes
its awful
it has presets its not dynamic so it stays at 1200rpm cpu cooler all the time
might be conflicting with afterburner if ur also setting a gpu fan curve there, idk if it does that tho since I usually try to avoid those utility bloatware things
for ur pump header did u plug it into the cpu fan header or a pump header on the mobo?
i think cpu fan but i dont know for sure
u can just set the cpu/pump crv from bios iirc
yea
honestly just set the curves there in bios and uninstall the asus crate thing if that's the only function ur using it for
i want one app to justr do everything, all the curves, all the driver updates, with no extra garbage or gamer skins
it does some updates i think but overall its pretty useless
mostly rgb stuff i dont use and game launcher stuff
yeah I tend to avoid all the rgb barf and "gamer utilites" and set things in bios and afterburner/xtu as needed
hwinfo/cpu&gpuz/afterburner and xtu are the only things I keep
i keep the nvidia stuff only cuz i need to adjust my settings sometimes
and then ofc i am forced to use all the razer garbage
oof
i wanna replace the mousepad with an ltt one at some point but i cant find any mice that are similar enough
mice? should work with any iirc
oh are u using the razer wireless power thing?
no
the mouse is some naga trinity or something, i like the size but it was expensive and its just ok but i want to rid myself of synapse at some point
I mean u can use the ltt deskpad with ur current mouse
yes
ohhh u want to replace the razer thing
yea
makes sense lol
yea lol
its nice i just hate the software
my hand literally covers up the rgb why do i need software
does it have onboard memory?
yea but it refuses to work without the software
usually u can just set the settings u want and save it to onboard and uninstall the software
giant oof
if i didnt need synapse i would be ok with it
with the logitech ones u can just store it onboard and delete the logitech thing
oh i hate logitech software it doenst work, i use it for a racing wheel it never works
I use the g915tlk for keyboard and g502 wireless for mouse and I just have it stored onboard and deleted the logitech thing and things works out
ill try to see if i can get razer to do that as well
i think its because the pad and mouse are synced or whatever
yea
the steelseries software is better, its not intrusive either i used it once
very nice keyboard and software
ye have steelseries keyboard on my laptop and it works well enough, still uninstalled it tho xd
lol
just hate anything that's like not critical for my pc to run
assuming it doesnt prevent me from using my computer, i will get rid of the asus stuff
i think it just auto installed as soon as i turned it on for the first time
is it a prebuilt?
no
some of them image their os installs with a bunch of bloatware
yea
i think armoury crate just does drivers which you can install from their site, but also include armoury crate by default
thats great
got windows down to just 45 background tasks
nice
as soon as i can get fortnite and stuff to run on linux, i am done with windows
think I got to 32 on my desktop, there's a bunch of stuff that the laptop runs in the background for systems/fans/etc

yeah I have to use windows for work and uni and if I didn't have to I would have hopped over to the linux train by now
yea, its just a few games/programs i use regularly stopping me
idk if apex runs on linux yet but if it does I'd be down to move lol
oh boy i found more asus software that will not let me remove it
i think it did, idk if it still does or not
protonDB says apex is gold
it shoudl work
ok
dang we've been at it for 3hrs
where do you see this list? i checked task manager but i dont see it
oh wow
380msgs lmao
lol
did u click on more details?
yea
should be here
mine looks completely different
huh what's ur's like rn?
its just a giant list of every process, no counter, light mode. theres no apps section and then background section
oh no
i got it
like from here right?
yea
for theme u can change it here
are you on 11?
yeah
ah, im on 10
oh that makes sense
there's still dark theme on 10 tho, just search theme in settings
yea i am not paying above $100 for windows thats just absurd. i will probasbly switch to linux soon anyway
got like 3 free licenses out of my uni lol
and im not updating to 11 until they fix whatever is going on over there
nice
paid with it through tuition but I'd like to pretend it's free
lol
how did you get down to 45 bg processes? there is so many i dont know what to do
what's ur list like rn?
105
oh I mean like the actual processes
wdym? like all the stuff thats open?
yeah like this stuff
mostly windows stuff or is there a lot of other things running
mostly windows but a lot of other stuff too
I'd start with the startup tab and turning off everything
https://github.com/builtbybel/ThisIsWin11
was about to suggest this but forgot ur on 10
imo u can have all of them off unless u use them every time ur pc is on, just more background stuff off in general
personally only have a script on for my vpn and that's it
i keep edge and steam on for sure since thats most of what i use
what the heck is this
realtek audio is rpobably something to keep on right?
I have it off, do u use any of the audio filters/enhancers?
i dont use it at all
i just assumed it was to make audio work at all
like a driver
yeah I just uninstall all the utilites, drivers are usually in services not in the processes list
so what does it do then? if its not a driver
theres nothing to even open what does this thing do
for general utilities, I'd sugguest
- sysinternals
- hwinfo/cpuz&gpuz/afterburner/xtu (for intel)
- systeminformer (was processhacker)
- wiztree/treesize
- powertoys
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/
https://www.hwinfo.com/download/
https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
https://www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowerup-gpu-z/
https://www.msi.com/Landing/afterburner/graphics-cards
honestly nothing
im genuinely confused on the realtek thing, theres no program attached for me to open at all, i dont use it, does it do anything
nope, had it off since 2018 lol
so audio works wothout it?
for all the systems I've used I've just uninstalled all the utilities and restarted windows and let it download all the required drivers and left it as is
usually windows is decent at finding basic drivers to make things work
and the there's no need for the rest of the bloatware
oh that's windows stuff
grab the system informer thing from ^ and u can see a lot more of what's going on
the windows version of it is process explorer in the sysinternals
Alright yea, where do I go to just delete everything and let it install all the necessary stuff
https://systeminformer.sourceforge.io/nightly.php nightly build is here for systeminformer, is not developed by windows so ur gonna get a bunch of warnings from windef about viruses/etc but it's a false positive, alternatively u can grab process explorer from here, via msft https://live.sysinternals.com/procexp64.exe and it has similar functions but there's not as much controls as systeminformer
System Informer, A free, powerful, multi-purpose tool that helps you monitor system resources, debug software and detect malware.
hmm ok
i might try that windows 11 thing that lewts you remove all the garbage stuff from the iso
yeah that works too, idk if it works on 10 tho
what is that thing called, i might look into it i just cant remmeber the name
and yeah the deboat thing is much more user friendly instead of a bunch of cmdline entries
yea
i just want somewthing for pc that is as simple and just works as macos, but also lets me use the stuff i need
it's this one
ok ty
i wonder, is there a way to do that and keep all my files/programs or do i need to clean install it
oh for win11 u can just run it as an app and it cleans out windows for u
oh really? so i can just upgrade and then use it?
like it's surprisingly easy and efficient
yeah
I'd suggest a clean install tho if ur going win11 from 10
hmm i wonder if this would work better since 11 has a bunch of missing stuff that i like https://github.com/Sycnex/Windows10Debloater
haven't seen this one yet, could look into it
dang it removes a lot
i would wanna keep mc and solitare tho
and the xbox stuff since i use gamepass
why do you think that?
does thisiswin11 have a revert tool?
yeah u can select to have a restore point created before the changes
if windows didnt use so much performance for random junk it wouldnt be a problem but they wont fix it
and yeah if u use a lot of the windows services a lot of these tools will brick them since those will almost always be online/require connection back to a live service
ok
i use a few just for like gamepass and such but other than that i want them gone
for me I don't use any on my work pc so I went with basically everything in the win11 thing, for my laptop I just did the settings stuff and it worked out
this may be the solution to my rbg software problems
yeah openrgb works for most things, personally haven't used it yet but I've heard mixed feedback about it. So far it's mostly "it's better than oem software but it's still rgb software so the bar is literally underground"
well one rgb software is better than 19
after removing the armoury crate the only thing wrong is that the one, low quality light on my motherboard doesnt lioght up but thats not really a problem
ok ima try fortnite and see if performance had improved
ok i changed to dx11 and lowered a few settings, now im at a low of 120 high of 144 which is good since my refresh rate is 144
it seems to stutter occasionally
oh yea it dips to 40-50 every so often and its on fairly low settings
which bios version are u running rn?
version info is in hwinfo under mobo
oof any error codes in eventviewer or on the bsod?
which mobo are u using?
b550-f wifi gaming
https://www.asus.com/uk/supportonly/prime b550-plus/helpdesk_bios/ there's version 3001 up rn
ok, i have to flash it with a usb right?
not too sure with that particular mobo, one sec
thats the wrong mobo
ok ill do the 2806 thanks
so do i just put the .cap on my stick and then use the button on the back of the motheerboard?
gl
just found it lol
idk if this is ur exact one but looks like there's one labeled for bios
Yea
I had to use that when I built it since the bios didn’t support my cpu by default
Ok it worked! My custom boot logo is gone tho but that’s not a giant issue lol
i got worried cuz it bootlooped like 5 times and then posted to windows
but we clear
yeah it takes quite a few restarts sometimes, for bios updates I just let it run for like till it finishes or 6hrs (whichever comes first) and only after that I'll try other troubleshooting steps
bricked enough mobos by trying to force a restart too soon lmao
oof
oh wow
oh btw it looks like my aio is plugged into the aio header
or at least something is
dang lmao
do you have any specific tips for reapplying the thermal paste?
If it’s a founders edition ? Be really careful with the ribbon cables
And careful with the led cable as it’s almost impossible to remove
If you are going to reapply thermal paste might as well replace the padding
Take your time as you can only break it once
oh i meant the cpu lol but ty
oh for cpu? easy, grab a bowl to capture the screws in.
its easy to put it in a bowl since you won't lose the screws.
ok, what about just general pattern or tips for the application in general
well X mark the spot
as in make a X mark 🙂 and you will be fine
Ok Ty
