PC randomly turns off but lights remain on

Lights remaining on is common and shouldn't be a concern.
Your wording is unclear. Is it turning off on its own, like crashing? Or is this just when you turn the computer off yourself?

Those 4 times happened all within around 12 mins*

Alright, focus on that, lights have very little involvement here.

  1. What are you doing when it shuts off?
  2. Is it immediate, or does windows freak out then shut off a while later?
#

If you hear a click from the PSU when it shuts off, it could be the overcurrent protection freaking out. That has a cooldown before it's fully functional again, which may explain the following shutdowns. I'm betting if you let the PSU cool down before booting a second time, it wouldn't take 4 reboots. If that's the case, rebooting immediately can be dangerous for your parts.

  1. when it shuts off, i turn off the psu because the case's power button won't turn anything on.
  2. immediate. screen just goes black. no shutdown screen. no bsod right b4.
#

don't remember hearing any clicks.

#

ohh should i show the event logs? it shows errors (i dont understand the errors tho ngl)

#

Event logs always shows errors, but if there's one at the same time as the crash, that could be useful

#

However, an immediate shutdown usually isn't software related

#

So windows probably isn't even aware it's happening

Alrighty, sounds like something is fucky wucky and drawing too much power or spiking unexpectedly

#

How often does this happen?

carmine lake
#

not that often. pc was built in jan and has only happened this week. 1st time was a few days ago and 2nd was today.

This is very hard to diagnose unless it's reproducible

#

If I were in your position, I'd use MSI Afterburner to reduce the power limit of the GPU. If no crashes, that means your GPU or the cables leading to it are bunk. But since it happens so rarely, it's gonna be hard to see if that fixes it.

#

Also, might sound weird, but change the wall outlet your PC is plugged into (and don't plug it into a power strip). Sometimes an inconsistent draw of power from the wall can cause issues. Luke and Linus from LTT have both experienced this.

I removed it from the power strip. I'll need to move my whole setup to put it into another outlet.

#

ok done.

So far no issues after changing my outlet.
