I build my new pc last week and yesterday it shut down 3 times randomly. I left it on idling while I went to work today and it shut down after ~40 min of idling (see screenshot attached).
It is event ID 41 and from what I've seen on google pretty much anything could be causing the issue.

pliant pumice
#

ID 41 is just the general code unsafe shutdown so it doesn't really narrow down the issue. do u have hwinfo or any other logging software to see if there's any temp issues?

#

also could just be hardware issues

quartz jolt
#

nope. do you have any youd recommend?

pliant pumice
#

website

quartz jolt
#

ok. should i just leave it running?

pliant pumice
#

yeah leave it running and just use it normally and see if there's any value that stands out

#

also have u checked for all the windows/driver/bios updates?

quartz jolt
#

windows and drivers updated

#

not bios coz that scares the shit out of me if i fuck it up

pliant pumice
#

what's ur mobo?

quartz jolt
#

gigabyte aero b650 g

pliant pumice
#

can u expand the mobo section and see which bios version ur running?

quartz jolt
#

F2

#

could it be a psu issue? in the past ive used seasonic but this time i went with a bequiet dark power 13. the new one with the connector for 40 series gpu

pliant pumice
#

yeah f2 is a really old bios, it's v. F5b now and the agesa 1.0.0.5 update is actually sorta important

quartz jolt
#

mmm ok

#

ill risk blowing up my computer

pliant pumice
#

bios updates aren't that much of an issue anymore tbh, most updating tools are basically self installers and as long as u just follow the on screen instructions there's not a whole lot different than windows updates

quartz jolt
#

i have qflash maybe ill do that

pliant pumice
#

and since ur running a zen3 x3d cpu it's even more useful since 1.0.0.5 is meant to update for tuning and compatibility of the new x3d cpus

quartz jolt
#

it could power off during the install

pliant pumice
#

here's the manual page for bios setup/updates

pliant pumice
quartz jolt
#

ok

#

im gonna do it

#

wish my computer luck !

pliant pumice
#

gl

quartz jolt
#

ok its at F5b now. lets see if it turns off in the next 24 hours 🙂

#

also gonna see if i get a better cinebench score

#

well shit my cpu feels a lot more confident heating up. before it never got over 70-75, but now its jumping straight to 90

pliant pumice
#

what's the rest of ur setup?

quartz jolt
#

h150i

pliant pumice
#

should be fine then tbh, think it might just be that the older bios/agesa code didn't allow for the correct boosting/oc behavior

#

what's the power draw rn?

quartz jolt
#

how do i check

pliant pumice
#

leave hwinfo on and run through a cinebench run or any other cpu benchmark

#

could just be that on the old bios it's not allowing for the full boost/power draw

quartz jolt
#

aaah before auto kept it around 1

#

cinebench is running atm

pliant pumice
#

yeah that will do it, 1v vs 1.2v is a sizeable difference

#

oh can u pop open the sensors page?

quartz jolt
pliant pumice
#

like this

quartz jolt
#

sounds like a spaceship taking off

pliant pumice
#

yeah under load it's gonna sound like that, u can change the fan crv delay to 2-3 sec, that way it wouldn't spin up for short spikes

#

also can u double check the power draw? is it 125w average or more? cuz GN's run is at 250w

quartz jolt
#

where does it say that?

pliant pumice
#

can u do another multi core run and check and see if there's a sectin with core power draw/cpu package power?

quartz jolt
#

oh i see it

#

average 124

#

max 129

pliant pumice
#

huh, sorta low wattage for such high temps

quartz jolt
#

maybe i didnt put the block on properly?

#

i was worried about breaking it

pliant pumice
#

my laptop hits 160w and the radiator fits in a 15in laptop so I'd def look at ur cooler

quartz jolt
#

yeh but arent the intel chips power hogs this gen?

pliant pumice
#

make sure that the film is removed and the thermal paste is properly applied and the mounting/mounting pressure is done correctly

quartz jolt
#

wtf there were a film?!

pliant pumice
#

yeah but it's more so that a 360 rad shouldn't hit 90c under a 120w load

#

there's a film on some aios but not all, not too sure about the h150i since I've never used it

quartz jolt
#

there was a plastic cover but i didnt see a film over it too

#

it idles like 50C

pliant pumice
#

like this ^ on some coolers

#

yeah 50 is a high idle temp for a liquid cooler

#

what's ur fan curve like?

quartz jolt
#

its on quiet

#

but my ambient is like 25

pliant pumice
#

try standard and see what that's like

#

wait what's the idle power draw?

quartz jolt
#

39

#

it keeps moving

#

36-40

pliant pumice
#

what's the cinebench score?

quartz jolt
#

going to normal dropped the coolant temp

pliant pumice
quartz jolt
#

33k

#

but

#

i got 35208 when i first installed it

pliant pumice
#

huh yeah that's 3k lower than the average

quartz jolt
#

ive got a bunch of extra crap loaded in the background now

pliant pumice
#

idle power is higher than usual too

#

oh

#

that'll do it

#

bruh how much stuff do u have open lmao

quartz jolt
#

thats just for my games

pliant pumice
#

like I mean it's not necessary to keep it open all the time tbh

quartz jolt
#

but who wants to need to reload it?

pliant pumice
#

ig that's fair, it's just that it's gonna have a much higher idle power/temp

quartz jolt
#

thats why i got 64gb ram with this pc. i never close my chrome tabs until my computer is unusable... then just restart

pliant pumice
#

I'm sorta the opposite lol, I axed basically all the startup apps and disabled half the windows services just to get the most perf out of my pc

quartz jolt
#

my coolant temp still decreasing and my cpu is 4C lower than before

#

but i like it quiet

#

and my exhaust dont even ramp up much at all! positive pressure ftw >:D

pliant pumice
#

that's sorta the tradeoff imo, it's either gonna be louder but cooler or quieter but hotter

#

what I wouldn't give to be back to a desktop with actual fans lol

quartz jolt
#

you know those ACs that have heat pipes running underground to get rid of the heat?

#

when i build my new house im gonna get those underground to pump my pc loop

#

no need for fans !

pliant pumice
#

whole room water cooling when xd

quartz jolt
#

nah because the heat it still in the room!

#

need to get it out of the room

pliant pumice
quartz jolt
#

off topic. but do you know much about nodejs?

pliant pumice
#

not really but I know a few friends who's into that

quartz jolt
#

ah damn

#

im working on a project and its a bit over my head

#

getting it set up in aws

pliant pumice
#

also it's a tech server so I'm guessing there's probs a bunch of people here who's good at that

quartz jolt
#

thats true

#

but im antisocial

#

and youre already here

pliant pumice
#

mood

quartz jolt
#

anyway thats for the help! hopefully it doesnt crash again

pliant pumice
#

I mean if u have questions I can dm my friends and see if they know more abt it and I can just message back the replies

quartz jolt
#

it could also have been the power cable itself. it had a bit of tension there so ive moved my power board slightly

pliant pumice
#

yeah double check all the cables and make sure things are seated correctly, I'd also double check ur cooler since it is a lot hotter than it should be for 120w

quartz jolt
#

yeh well if they have time. basically i need to set up a backend that can compile latex. i can do it locally with nodejs because i have latex installed, but im not sure how i can get it working with aws. I think maybe docker, but i dont know much about it

pliant pumice
#

aight I'll just quote that msg and see if they get back to me

quartz jolt
#

yeah if it crashes again my next thing to try will be unplug and replug everything

#

i know its not a heat issue because it was just idle this morning when i thought id see how it goes if i just leave it on when i go to work

#

when i got back it was off

quartz jolt
#

happened again after 2h 35mins of being on

quartz jolt
#

just reset my CMOS and restored to optimised defaults

quartz jolt
#

Crashed again. Took out 2 ram sticks to see if that could be the problem

#

It literally lasted 5 minutes and crashed again

hollow thicket
#

Could be too huge of a powerdraw.

hollow thicket
#

event 41 is most of the time related to PSU issues.

quartz jolt
#

but it even happens sometimes when im just scrolling through facebook

#

i took it out of my room and set it up in another room for easier access and just left it on overnight and it didnt shut down

#

im going to leave it on during the day too while im at work and see if its still on when i get back.

#

the only changes have been the power board that the computer is plugged into. i might just need a new one

#

could dust and hair and crap getting into a power board fk it up? and just one socket on the power board? crazy

hollow thicket
#

Sure thats all possible

#

so your issue is resolved? with a new power brick?

quartz jolt
#

Well I wouldn’t say it’s resolved.. it survived 7 hours without turning off. Might not last the next 7

#

And when I get back to working on it tonight it might stop again too

pliant pumice
# quartz jolt legend ❤️

maybe worth looking at ecs fargate if thinking about the aws route, though it may be simpler to spin up an ec2 instance and just use it the way they're used to or with docker-compose if it's not something that needs to be done at scale; aws can get pretty complex (and pricey) pretty fast

#

got this back just now

quartz jolt
#

thats bob! ill look into ecs fargate

quartz jolt
#

thanks*

quartz jolt
#

i think i figured it out.

#

computer worked fine in the other room so i moved it back today. after about an hour it poofs off again

#

and this time i realised... my ice machine that is on the adjacent desk was spitting out ice at the same time

#

theyre both connected to the same circuit

#

i think its the fluctuation in power that causes it to be like WHOOPS!

#

ive turned off my ice machine for the time being and we'll see how my pc goes'

quartz jolt
#

ffs it went off again

hollow thicket
#

Still could be a bad psu

quartz jolt
#

it could but i dont really want to unplug everything to send it back

hollow thicket
#

Ok 👍🏻

quartz jolt
#

I wonder if it could be my motherboard or gpu now. the VGA led on my motherboard has been on a few times
