Hello,

I am looking for a 40 series gaming laptop that’ll also double as a work station. I need to output to a ATEM Television Studio at 1080i.

Unfortunately the receiving encoder will not take 1080p.

Can anyone confirm it’ll output 1080i to an external source?

Just curious about the cards themselves. Haven’t decided on an actual machine yet.

Okay, so what you need to understand is how the display signaling technologies work.

1080i is an INTERLACED format, while 1080p is a progressive scan format. 1080i was used on old tube TVs and was an encoding method to compensate for each individual pixel having to be drawn one at a time by an electron beam. To make this go faster, the TV would only refresh every other line and this essentially creates best-guess between-frames. 1080p or PROGRESSIVE scan is commonly used on modern displays because it renders whole images to the screen at once.

As you can imagine, such radically different signaling and rendering functions will create some heavy incompatibilities.

Now, providing that your laptop's HDMI or DisplayPort is DIRECTLY CONNECTED to the 40-series GPU, you may be able to force a 1080i custom resolution.

Thanks. I do understand how the technology works. I used a Mac for years and it had a 1080i output option. Apple removed it. The output needs to be 1080i as that’s what the broadcast company needs. Broadcasts are notoriously slow to update technologies… so right now producing a broadcast is impossible as the video switched needs to be set to 1080i as the recipient can only accept that display signal. I’m just hoping the 40 series have a display option to output at 1080i. If I need to do something custom that’s fine. Just need it to be possible at all

As external. I don’t need to change the actual display of the laptop

My other option is 720p…

I'd prefer 720p ngl

It’s a sports broadcast and 1080i is sharper than 720p. So stupid they can’t take 1080p

#

Ice hockey at 720p is hard to see the puck sometimes. But that may be required.

Actually further research seems to suggest the newer rtx cards don't offer interlacing

FFS 🤦🏻.

#

If only my employer would dump the broadcast company and just stream to YouTube lol

Intel iGPUs seemingly do

Wait… so I could use the integrated gpu on an intel laptop?

So hybrid GPU laptops (which use the iGPU for display out) most likely would work

#

Or pure iGPU laptops

I am looking at high end 40 series gaming laptop. The only output I need to do is lightweight work.

#

Preproduced video or images. Think overlays in a tv broadcast.

Pretty much every 40 series gaming laptop I've seen has the iGPU attached to all outputs (bar really fancy ones)

Oh wicked. Best of both worlds.
