I just opened my laptop and my disk usage was at 100% for like 10 minutes but then it went to normal. Is there a way to fix it because it slows down any task considerably.

The system is just doing tasks it needs to do.. It could be anything, but I wouldnt worry as long as the drive is in good shape

How much RAM do you have? When I only had 8 GB of RAM and an HDD, sometimes windows would run out of RAM and start swapping to the swap file. It was painfully slow as both the disk and CPU were pegged at 100% for what seemed like forever before it would settle down. I upgraded to an SSD and 24 GB of RAM and it has been fine ever since.

I've seen it happen on at least two computers. Adding RAM in both cases resolved the issue.

Change the indexing to enhanced instead of classic
And remove folders from exclusions too

That's common.
Whenever you open your pc connected to internet.
It will download windows updates,windows store updates,windows defender scan automatically often.
There is defragmentation every week maybe.
So all these things consume HDD.
Get nvme SSD and fast processor to solve this issue or do all the updates everytime u open laptop then u r fine.

He mean windows OS doesn't utilise HDD properly.
He mean all the HDD 99-100% usage going for windows updates or some updates installation rather using 80% or something less % so that we can browse or do other stuff
We can't do anything until all the installations ends then HDD % drops then we can start using pc smoothly

i am using i3 5005u 2ghz,4gb ram ddr3 1600mhz,1tb hdd 7200rpm,geforce 920m . Laptop. I am facing this issue. well it is not issue . i would just call my processor and HDD is slow. I will never recommend anyone using windows 10/11 installing on HDD. but hdd is great for storage
