Create a bootable windows 10 install USB using Rufus and boot from it by changing boot order in BIOS (you'll boot into Windows 10 setup as if it started for the first time) and choose the "Upgrade" option. Chances are, any dumb errors they give from within the OS won't show up there.
Worst case it'll reinstall without apps but all your files will still be kept in windows.old folder.
If you're not sure - get a 1TB external HDD and move all your important stuff there, then just clean reinstall windows after deleting everything in C drive
Also - why do you want to update? want new features or something? Security updates still work (I assume) so you're good and you could just keep using windows without a major update

Install Search Everything and type a file name in there which you know was in your user folder. It'll index everything so you can find stuff quite fast if you know the file/folder names
It can search hidden folders and stuff too so if your stuff is there, it should show up

This is why I always do this using a setup USB
Even win11 downgrading to win10, the inside-windows setup screen said it'll delete everything, but USB setup kept all files

if you are sure your files are gone, I'd recommend a clean reinstall now
= delete everything on the drive, start over from a blank clean slate with the setup USB

Boot from USB drive and click "install now"
Select Custom Install Only instead of Upgrade
Be very careful on the partition selection screen
Make sure you only look at your SSD which you want to delete
You'll see "drive 0 partition 1" and "drive 1 partition 2" etc etc
Make sure you know which drive number (0,1,2,whatever) is your ssd - you can find out by size of partitions
Click delete on every partition on that drive (now you'll only see drive number and 1 partition there, unallocated)
Click the "new" button and next, then select it. Windows will create new partitions on it's own for some system stuff
Then go ahead with the install.
If you're not confident you can do this, find a tutorial or some way where you can be absolutely sure that you don't accidentally delete your other HDD partitions

I went into user accounts in safe mode by logging into admin that way
And switched the user into an administrator
Now I can restart again and it should be working now
It could be just like hiding files or something it happened once where it said I had shit ton of space but there wasn’t

Thankfully all my videos and games and everything were on other drives
So I literally just lost some Minecraft saves or whatever not too big a deal
