Hey there.
First of all, I'm more of a Linux guy so I don't know that much about Windows in general.
I'm doing servicing on a relative of mine computer And I'm trying to upgrade them from an IDE hard drive to SSDs. However, being a 870 it can't really boot from NVMe so I'm getting a compact flash interface card for IDE for the device to be able to boot from. My question now is how many gigabytes would you recommend me to get for a Windows boot device? ( Not the C: but the X:) I am currently thinking about getting a 4 GB CF card. However if it's better for me to get an 8 GB I'll get a 8 GB instead.
(I included a photo of what i mean about compact flash interface card.)

I would go as high as needed

#

16gb and 32 and 64gb shouldn't be overly expensive

It's only a boot device tho, i am getting a 256gb c drive for them

indigo copper
#

Oh does the system support usb?

paper tartan
#

Yea but as far as i an aware Windows don't allow installation on USB

indigo copper
#

Sure it does

paper tartan

Also compact flash prices are

Again

#

Nvme c drive

#

Compact flash x drive

halcyon badge
#

so you are using it as a flash drive for installation?

#

ah ok i see

#

i suppose it could work

paper tartan
#

Windows is installed onto a x drive for boot and a c drive for Windows

#

My c drive will be installed onto this

#

But i7-870 don't know what nvme is for boot

indigo copper
#

That makes no sense

#

I870 doesn't know what an nvme drive is then how are you going to boot from the nvme once it's installed?

paper tartan
#

Let me give you a Linux explanation, /boot will be on compact flash, my / and /home will be on nvme

indigo copper
#

Thats not how it works

#

Boot partitions need to be together and not split because the minute that compact flash fails it will take windows with it.

paper tartan
#

So?

#

I'll just replace the compact flash

indigo copper
#

And remake the boot

paper tartan
#

Gparted is a thing

#

Or il just dd a backup onto it

indigo copper
#

Is the I 870 actually needed

paper tartan
#

It's the computer of my aunt

#

I'm just fixing it

#

The harddrive is my linux test drive

indigo copper
#

Please give it a cleaning when you fix it

paper tartan
#

Duh

#

I have a budget of 100$ cad

#

So i make do with what i have

indigo copper
#

I bet you could get an optiplex for around that

#

With more modern hardware 🙂

paper tartan
#

Yea but my aunt only want this computer

#

No replacing

indigo copper
#

Rip

paper tartan
#

Also optiplex are 175$ here

indigo copper
#

In the used market really?

paper tartan
#

Cad is not usd

indigo copper
#

I know

paper tartan
#

Yea used

#

Anyways

indigo copper
#

Yeah I'm not sure how that would work you will need to test it

I'm selling to my aunt a brand new nvme that i had spare, I'm buying a pci braket for it, I found locally a compact flash interface card and all i need is to find a proper compact flash
