Nearing my wits’ end trying to get an old platform working. I’ve hit a point where one of three things is failing, and I’m not sure how to diagnose it more without buying an entirely separate machine to test against. I’ve got an Intel Core i7-3960x on an Asus Sabertooth X79 motherboard with 32GB of DDR3 1600 RAM. The system won’t POST and won’t output video (through a known-working GPU), and the motherboard is reporting that there is no RAM inserted (despite the fact that there definitely is).
I’ve tried cycling each RAM stick through each DIMM individually. I’ve tried reseating the CPU and the GPU. I’ve tried rebuilding the entire system and building it on a cardboard box to remove the possibility of shorts. I’ve tried flashing the BIOS using the quick flashback feature to no avail. I’ve replaced the CMOS battery. I’ve tried a known-good PSU, and so far, there is nothing that will make this system work.
At this point, I can see four potential points of failure:
- CPU is dead.
- MoBo is dead.
- RAM is dead.
- BIOS is Quite Dead.
I’m not sure how to proceed on this matter, or how to identify the failed hardware without an entire stable second X79 system available.
