So i found this thing in my closet, does anyone know what this is and how it works?

Interesting. Normally those wires inside would go somewhere. You can usually pop the cover off using a flathead screwdriver, though sometimes the plastic is stiff so might take some effort.

Ah kk yeah that looks like your typical old school RJ11 (or in this case, RJ45) phone junction block. They started making them with RJ45 ports so one could use either type of cable to connect phone handsets or ethernet, depending how they were wired internally / what they were connected to.

If there's nothing else connecting to that junction box, it's not gonna go anywhere. Probably unused / unwired by the original builders / contractors.
