What I have to say, is that if I think have a really good hobby I am super into, then I want to make the best purchasing decisions possible, so I have more money to invest on the hobby. However, how would someone learn besides through trial and error if nobody told them? You ask around, and asking stupid questions is par for the course. If you do not know something, you do not know it, until you do. You learn though many different way and the community for what you're doing is one of the best ways to learn about something. Now, if the community is harsh about you not knowing something (what happened to me) you wont want to get into it anymore, especially if you believe that you'll become like the one person you spoke to. IF you talk about it and people say there are better options, great! It isn't your personal goal (@boreal rivet), to make sure they absolutely maximize their budgets, and you shouldn't tell them to do the exact opposite (@sturdy hatch). These are both the extremes of the situation. I think that They could maybe not devote as much of their money as they possibly could to this, but then again, they're 17! They deserve to spend all the money they wish regardless of how outlandish it may seem! And nobody should ever have to tell them otherwise. The extreme budgeting would "make sense" if they also had to pay living expenses, but then again, it's their life, and you shouldn't do that to someone, regardless of how bad their decisions are. That is all.
