Question about switches. Im looking at buying the Keychron S1 with Low Profile Gateron switches on the hotswappable board. But I am new to keyboards and want something I can swap out switches with down the road. Can the LP Gateron switches be swapped for any other brands or styles or am I stuck with LP Gaterons?

gloomy patrol
#

if you want the options to switch the switches to most other options on the market i would grab one of the v series hot swap boards

edgy plank
#

Will that board take both low profile and regular? Im leaning towards wanting something lower profile for no wrist rest and would love to go full custom but cant find anything case wise that is in line with the Air75 or Keychron S1

#

Height wise that is

Ik it ain’t a keyboard, but what are your guys thoughts on the Logitech M720?

Does anyone know of a thinner keyboard case? Im looking to build a semi low profile keyboard but have never done any custom keyboard things. So that makes shopping hard. Goal is to make a pretty thin 75% keyboard with full size switches and some shorter caps.

#

Im interested in low profiles like the Air 75 but want to build my own and leave room to grow hence going full size switches. Because shopping for low profile makes me feel like I am one of like 100 people that want a low profile keyboard haha

if they are just plan jane gateron red

fleet swallow
#

so, contact cleaner?

#

cuz some of the switches i have to push with lijke 1kg of force

#

and wobble it

#

to press

crimson holly
#

that is very strange

#

i say you could desolder one of the switches that's giving you trouble, open it and diagnose any physical problems

#

they're gonna be replaced anyway, so i say its worth at least figuring out what's the problem

fleet swallow
#

well, replaced not anytime soon

#

but if that's the only solution then

crimson holly
#

i guess take one that you dont use often

#

idk, the ]} to the left of enter

is there any F key you dont use

desoldering time?

fleet swallow
crimson holly
#

yeah hang on

cuz if that's the case, take out the troublesome switch, then replace it's spot with one of the functional F-row switches that you dont use often

fleet swallow
#

i guess i can removme the >

#

.

crimson holly
#

after this situation i would say it might be wroth researching into custom boards, idk how much that gaming board cost but with customs you more often than not get the convenience of a hotswap PCB

nah, broke uni student

crimson holly

what switches u got for replacement

i aint got any yet lamo

i have to order from overseas

crimson holly

rip, i recommend Jwick Blacks, i run them myself

very light, very smooth, and best off, very cheap

fleet swallow

ill probably order only enough to repplace the defective ones

and wit ha bit of bacckuip

crimson holly

hm, guess that makes sense, which ones you got rn?

fleet swallow

crimson holly

crimson holly

fleet swallow

I'm gonna remove one to inspect it and reassemble kt

#

I have no replacement

crimson holly

good luck, but yeah, as far as i see it, repositioning functioning ones into faulty spots once the faulty ones are out

fleet swallow
#

Thanks, I'll probably update later

fleet swallow
#

Seems like fuckmaster implemented the RGB led in the switch

#

And using a suction gun removed on of the RGB pads

#

👏👏

boreal rivet
#

use solder wick

#

its like infinitely better than a sucker

crimson holly
#

now that's unfortunate

#

such a cumbersome implementation instead of having the LEDs already on the PCB

boreal rivet

this implementation is less diffused than an SMD solution

#

Fuck me in the ass

#

6 fucking pin

crimson holly

yup

#

the pain

crimson holly
fleet swallow
#

The fuck am I gonna do now

crimson holly
#

i just dont buy from that

boreal rivet
fleet swallow
#

Is my only solution 2 pin keys

#

With no rgb

boreal rivet
#

I just said you can short the pin to the trace

crimson holly
# fleet swallow Is my only solution 2 pin keys

there are switches that support that style of led implementation, but i have no idea which, or if you just dont care about the rgb, you could just resolder the 2 pins without the LED (i believe it is individually removable if you pull on it from above)

fleet swallow
crimson holly
#

does the leaf inside have anything weird on it?

#

switch looks pretty normal

fleet swallow
#

The copper part isn't bent enough

boreal rivet

its literally just an mx rgb

fleet swallow

This switch never worked

#

From manufactorer

crimson holly

strange

boreal rivet

then replace with another one

crimson holly
fleet swallow
boreal rivet

with the same switch?

fleet swallow
#

Actually

#

Do all switches

#

Have the opening for rgb

boreal rivet
#

no

crimson holly
#

na, those have the 4 slots for the led to go thru

#

unless you buy the same ones, you dont get the led in

boreal rivet
#

it depends

#

in any case you could just drill some holes

crimson holly
#

useless effort for low reward

#

switches are cheap

#

you gotta value rgb more than life to do that lmao

boreal rivet
#

man your sense of cheap is warped as hell

fleet swallow
#

I happened to have a redragon red switch that I stole from a friend

#

RGB almost fits

crimson holly
#

can you not spare a few cents per switch

fleet swallow
#

No international credit cards or paypal

boreal rivet
#

of course I can

fleet swallow
#

And customs that steal shit

crimson holly
boreal rivet
#

doesn't mean I can't think switches are overpriced

crimson holly
#

you're free to think what you want, then dont complain when i do it

boreal rivet
#

have I?

crimson holly
#

anyway

#

just remove a functioning switch off of somewhere else you dont use it, and apply that one

#

temporal solution until you get new ones, but a solution nontheless

fleet swallow
#

Are keyboard switches normally open or normally closed

crimson holly
#

hm?

#

the switches themselves should come closed and assembled unless you specifically buy like

#

the individual components, housings, stems, springs

fleet swallow

I meant electrically

#

I moved the metal inside the switch that never work before now it is always pressed down

I'm gonna reassemble this shit together

crimson holly

wooo

#

pog, ya got dis

fleet swallow
#

1 hour for 1 switch

#

This shit is cursed

crimson holly
#

eh, like lubing switches, first ones are a pain but then you find a comfortable pace

#

lubing does take less time than troubleshooting a non-functional switch, but you get it

fleet swallow
#

No I had to bend around the insides of the switch

#

The actual copper

#

To make it work

crimson holly
#

oof

fleet swallow
#

The other idk

crimson holly
#

welp. good luck lmao

fleet swallow

Yeah

#

After prying 3 pads

your bending may have altered the actuation point of the switch

glossy plover
#

does anyone have suggestions for building a low profile low travel as quiet as possible keyboard?
I would like it to fit it with typewriter style rounded keycaps (SLA and FDM printer available)
I would like it to be backlit and if possible usable (USB type C) wired as well as via Bluetooth for an IPad and Android tablet.

Not sure if that Wishlist is even possible to mix this way at all.

So the rounded keycaps are the only thing outlandish

everything else is fine
