They're "gold standard" in that they're the most common [origin of] switch. Most of its competitors from the '70s and '80s that IMO made better switches (such as Alps and IBM) gave up production in the '90s due to rubber domes making "mechs" unprofitable during that time. Cherry survived because it was ingrained in markets like point of sale and terminal emulation. Which allowed them to last until mechs were popular again.

Oversimplified but the gist of it

Can't personally recommend clickies (blue), if you want there to be a bump in your keypress consider browns. Reds are linear so there isn't a stopping point and tend to be smoother, my preference though. Can try any though and if you don't like it return and try the other
