A couple of the Aer bags looks similar to the ltt commuter, but they're not any cheaper. Also designed a bit differently

Their bit shaft is evidently shorter than the LTT bits, which makes some of them (think T1.5) very hard to pull out of the driver socket by hand, due to both the magnet and limited friction you can have on a slim bit shaft

Black coating wears off about as quick as the LTT ones, although that wasn't intended to last anyway, so I pose no judgement on that

I appreciate the white-on-black lettering for easier identification. That comes with the cost that the anodization (?) printing will definitely wear out before any of the engraved LTT bits become hard to recognize. I tried scraping the print off with a fellow torx bit tip and with a soft nail polish, the print seems to stay on pretty well.

Those cheap bits came in a coating of grease that smells very unpleasant to me, although that's solvable with either mental copium or a paper towel and some isopropyl alcohol

Overall I can't complain about giving ~$4 for 24 bits (excl. shipping), somewhat disappointed that the exact bits I would love to buy (PH00, PH000, Tristar) seemingly aren't sold anywhere as stubby bits. Not that they were usually used on a ¼ shaft anyway.

Its the Japanese standard and so those Japanese machines like game consoles often have JIS

Using a JIS driver in a phillips bolt is fine.
Using a phillips driver in a JIS bolt is prone to damaging the bolt. Electronics are often small meaning small screws so even more likely to strip em.

The amount of stripped bolts I've seen in Japanese designed game consoles because of people using Phillips is a lot

I think Linus has expressed he really doesn't like the idea of mystery subscription box stuff because of the potential for waste. If you only want a specific product category you can buy e.g. mystery shirt as regularly as you deem appropriate already, and if you want a diverse range of categories then that makes it that much more likely someone will get a category they don't need/want. Plus all the logistical mess for sizings, and having a price that made sense for all the possible contents.

Slightly more tongue in cheek, I also think people have more than enough subscriptions in this timeline and don't want to turn merch/clothing into another tv subscription nightmare.

Yep, I was hoping it's basically the regular LTT backpack but 2/3 the size and it's not at all.

Positives: water bottle holder on the outside is SO MUCH BETTER than on the inside, I still don't get that decision at all on the original backpack.

It's also a lot more manageable for day to day than the regular LTT bag

Quality of materials is still really pretty good, not quite as high as OG bag, it's been costed down a bit, but I still think it will be very durable

CONS: storage locations, the regular LTT backpack has the front storage pocket where the screwdriver and other small stuff can go so it's easy to access, for some reason they put that in the BACK of the pocket of holding, so if you need to get a pen or something small out of that organization pouch, you have to dig through the rest of your bulky stuff in the pocket of holding.

Why there isn't a front pouch like on the regular LTT backpack I have no idea. It wouldn't add much thickness but would make it infinitely more usable than having to dig through the back of the main pocket

So what I did was just put it in the main part of the laptop sleeve part. Mine is 15.5 but the way the hinge is setup is that it has a bump on one side so it doesn’t fit in the sleeve

I would say 16” would be pushing it. Mines slightly bigger than 15.6 and it just fits well in the laptop area but not the sleeve. Could fit in the bag of holding though

I think when they say "some" 16" laptops they mean extremely slim ones. I believe the framework 16 doesn't even fit. The thing about the slim legions is they're slimmer than the base model legion, but they're still pretty big.

If there wasn’t a silica pack, moisture can get in there from storage,.. in shipping,.. pretty easy.
My 3d printer filament is 4 grams lighter after being dried and that ships air sealed with a silica pack.

But to have enough moisture to bleed fabric would be significant, so that can’t be it

I've been tempted to get an LTT backpack or something similar but this is a minor deal-breaker for me
my lenovo flex 5 16" probably won't fit .... and then there's the shipping fees to contend with ...

it would take weeks to reach the UK (from what I can gather) and also cost a lot

I do have a Herschel backpack that I use for longer trips since its 30L but the lack of compartments makes it really annoying to store tech stuff

It should fit in the OG bag? I don't know the exact dimensions of your laptop, but I had the Legion 7 16" (gen 6 AMD if it's relevant) (full size, not slim) and it fit no problem.

If declared properly on the shipment I think they're not supposed to recharge it, and that's the issue people are running into. So not recharging would be the correct situation I believe. I'm from the US though, don't trust my knowledge of import taxes.

and whilst it just about works
it just doesn't have enough compartments (a real inconvenience for me) and I do end up putting a lot of strain on the zips

We’re extremely happy to see many of you enjoying your backpacks now that they’ve started shipping- we love seeing all of your posts sharing your excitement and first impressions on Social Media!

But with that, we also see that in a small number of cases, some customers with 16” MacBook Pros have not been comfortable with how it fits within the bag. We understand that this is particularly frustrating because this laptop was specifically called out as compatible on our product page and communicated out as such.
Having your MacBook press up against the zipper isn’t just inconvenient, it’s not great for the laptop’s finish and also leaves your laptop’s corners more exposed to potential impacts.

Because of this, we’re removing all claims of the 16” MacBook Pro fitting in this bag from the website, and our ShortCircuit video.

As always, we will also be accepting any return requests due to incompatibilities with those who purchased this bag expecting that their 16” MacBook Pro would fit perfectly within our normal return period. Additionally, if you have a Commuter Backpack on the way with the expectation that your MBP 16 would fit perfectly, we’re happy to cancel your order.

But how did this happen?

When testing with an early sample of the Commuter Backpack,, we found that the 16” MacBook Pro was too large for the original laptop pocket layout, meaning that the rear zippers did not close with the MBP16 inside. We may not be Apple people by and large, but given the popularity of the MBP16, we wanted to make every effort to accommodate it without trading off the driving force of this bag’s design - creating a smaller, sleeker backpack for everyday use, which still carries the “carry as much as possible” DNA of the original LTT Backpack. We made adjustments to the rear pocket size and laptop sleeve, and voila - the MBP16 fit! Just barely… it’s a snug fit, but we were OK with that as we felt that it was a reasonable balance of size and capability.

But, even with the tightest manufacturing tolerances we could expect, there is always some variability in physical goods, and with the snug fit of the Macbook Pro 16 on its best day, even a few millimeters of difference turns that fit from snug to uncomfortable, as we’ve seen by the feedback from a few early deliveries so far. We appreciate our community (shoutout especially u/MarsMaher and u/Silent-Click86 on the subreddit) for bringing up these concerns quickly and reasonably - we’ll be reaching out with a personal thanks, as we’re sure that these posts have avoided some future headaches for other customers.

Moving forward - we’re going to re-evaluate our internal process for determining “best fit” when it comes to our pockets and sleeves, and as noted above, we’ll be making changes to our current Commuter Backpack product page to ensure that our existing product specs are reflective of what you can expect when your bag gets to your door.

Look up the side of your laptop, and the macbook.. if its bigger, it'll be tighters/not at all, if its smaller, then it'll be fine.. and by not at all I mean in the laptop sleve, you can still place it in the larger area infront of it if you want too..

whoa, my asus 17.3" laptop doesn't even fit width-wise. Holding the laptop next to the backpack it's bigger than the backpack. For what it's worth I ended up buying a huge air force helmet bag to carry this laptop.

the company that makes the bag apparently made more bags than helmets, so they put a laptop sleeve in it and sell it to people with huge laptops.

I think my acer laptop might fit, it's like a 15", but its in use so i will try it some other time

I'd argue the ltt precision is worse than the ifixit in many instances

Mostly due to reduction in knurling length changing how you can hold it

And being triple the cost doesn't help the situation

Its a Reasonable-ish middle ground between carrying the aluminum and plastic ifixit handles since it has storage (less than the plastic, but still some) but feels almost as nice as the aluminum ifixit

I'll continue to ask for JIS bits for ltt as that would help as I do have enough items where the LTT handle and its shortened shank have been very helpful. But lacking proper JIS means I have to be overly careful when working on them

It sounds like they can replace it for you if the defect is in manufacturing, but if you take it apart they have to void the warranty on it because they can't verify you didn't cause it. Which in the case of an integrated bearing I guess makes sense, how would you possibly replace that. Should probably ask what they can do about it, if your product is not working as advertised. They're usually good about fixing issues one way or another.

If you remove an unremovable bearing you broke it. Like, I'm not gonna defend their warranty void policy, I don't know the legality of it, and I strongly support right to repair of all items, but if you could non-destructively remove the bearing just measure it yourself? If the product is defective I would assume support would just replace it, solving the problem entirely, since from my experience and what I hear from others they're extremely helpful with that. So like I said, right to repair good, but in this case I figure you can either 1: remove it, measure it, and put in a new one, or 2: remove it, it won't go back together, and tada it's your fault it's broken now.

Right to repair doesn't mean they have to honor the warranty if you break the product, and my assumption is they know something about the assembly that means you "repairing" it will break it.

If your repair is successfully without breaking anything how would they even know you repaired it? The warranty would remain intact unless you told them you repaired it yourself. (Again, I guess legally they couldn't void it anyway, but it's irrelevant unless you break it, there's no legally dubious "warranty void if removed" sticker involved here).

I disagree. With a laptop for example, it’s more clear. If you take it apart and discover a blown capacitor on the motherboard, them accusing you of breaking it is baseless (a case of warranty void stickers being nonsense). In this case it’s more analogous to replacing the capacitor. Obviously they’ll blame you, you modified the product physically and the thing you modified is now broken. It doesn’t matter that it was broken before.

There's a threaded piece the endcap is inside. My assumption is that the bearing is press-fit into that threaded piece, becase as you said it's held to the end with a screw, and the threaded piece has to be attached to the bearing to spin with it (so the endcap spins).

Regardless, LTTstore support is helpful, and will just replace it if it's broken, idk what the problem is. It's like if your laptop manufacturer told you to check the display cable was fully connected because it wouldn't achieve full brightness (would never happen, but we can dream of a world where things made sense), and you complained they didn't want you to resolder the display side of the ribbon cable. Whatever the technical reason you shouldn't take apart the bearing further (I didn't design it, idk), support will make sure you end up with a working product.

I think as long as the value is less than $800 it would get a de minimis exception. You get shipment notification when the label is created, that's just how shipping works (that's typical of most businesses that don't own their shipping like Amazon warehouse items do). lttstore unfortunately had a tendency to pre-print labels, so you'd end up getting the notification a bit early, but they've gotten significantly better about that from my observation. Likely in this case the item is packed and just waiting to go out.

Can confirm. During the Canada Post strike, third party couriers weren't even picking up packages on a regular cadence due to their backlog. My work regularly ships things via Canada Post (like, on a daily basis), but when the strike happened, getting UPS / Purolator to show up was an exercise in frustration.

After having finally used the commuter bag “for real,” I only have one glaring piece of critical feedback so far.

Each bottle holder has a hidden zipper pocket. I like the idea of having an extra storage pocket on the outside in theory, but in practice I don’t actually care for this unless you’re sticking flat stuff like papers or very thin wallets in them. If you put in something like AirPods then it hogs space from a water bottle. I found that I was either using the hidden pocket or the bottle holder, but not both.

In future revisions I think I would much rather the bottle holder itself have some kind of zipper that would give you the option to close it off entirely if you wanted to store stuff in them.

I actually don't think this would be a problem. Feel the zippers they use on the backpack. The rubberized sheathing on them prevents any kind of scratching, and the actual zipper track itself isn't sharp or abraisive. I actually took my metal insulated water bottle and brushed it against the zipper track as if I was taking it in and out of my bag and there wasn't any kind of scratching or grating.

If you used this kind of zipper at the opening of the bottle holders I don't believe it would be an issue at all with scratching.

Given all that, I think I would have much preferred the bottle holder double as an outside pouch of holding for wallet, earbuds, whatever you need quick access to

It's not a bad idea, and yet they can also be pulled out and stolen fairly easily. If the bottle holder had a zipper at the opening I would feel way better about dropping valuables in it

Also I do wish they went a different route with the chest strap adjustment. Moving that plastic buckle between the four loops is a pain, they absolutely could have made it one big loop that you slide the buckle up and down on

Metal on metal is likely to scratch regardless of sharpness. (Which metal is scratched obviously depends on the hardness, but a zipper is almost certainly harder than the paint coating on the LTT bottles at least).

It may be more appropriate to say "wear" than "scratch", but I'm almost certain the LTT zipper tracks would wear the paint on the LTT bottles at an accelerated rate versus normal use.

the only way i was able to dent it was when it fell out of my bag as i was leaving a bus, it fell 5feet (guestimate) onto concrete, rolled its only a little dent with a few scratches around the dent. Everywhere else is perfect, its in better condition than the sistema one i have. I brought my brothers one.

apart from that dent you couldn't tell its over 2 years old now.

If you have a store near you best to take a look in person, cause they have many different lines of tshirts and fits. But the tldr breakdown would be regular (100% cotton), airism/dry (60% cotton, 40% poly similar to ltt), and airism (more polyester). And between regular and oversized fit. Also on sale they go down to about $10.
