hushed bobcat
#

@meager hound its the same in America, only businesses have 3-phase

rich star
#

@hushed bobcat thank you! i'll just wait it out.

hushed bobcat
#

though i have heard the power company can hook up 3 phase to your house

stark bough
#

@meager hound I was joking about that earlier. About a server not having enough power so they should take the power from the oven instead.

#

πŸ˜„

hushed bobcat
#

RAZZ keep an eye on Next Attempt, if it goes over 2 hours pause and resume

#

dont keep spamming it though please

#

the folding servers already have enough to do lol

rich star
#

okay i'll set a timer now (y)

hushed bobcat
#

oh you dont set the timer

its in the advanced client window

houses have 240V Split-Phase

hallow tiger
#

Same in the UK. More people are doing it to charge Electric Vehicles

rich star
#

my next attempt is in 3 minutes

stark bough
#

this house already has a 240 plug.... for an air compressor lol

hallow tiger
#

@rich star If "Next attept" gets up to an hour or so then Pause then Fold

rich star
#

@hallow tiger got it. thank you

stark bough

#

Should I pause now

hushed bobcat
#

nah you're fine

#

let me have your WU

#

🀣

stark bough
#

no. i need it to make it through the night

#

its cold.

#

You will have to pry the WU from my cold, Dead GPU

#

Quite a few homes have two phase coming in split up

hushed bobcat
#

every Residential home is hooked up 240V split-phase

#

ive never heard of anything else

#

ahh wait i may see the confusion
240V split phase is 2 120V lines 180 degrees apart

stark bough
#

maybe a duplex with gas

#

Yeah it’s 2 120v

pine cradle
#

our current here is single phase 220V

#

All over the Philippines

hushed bobcat
#

i had to research all this when i hooked a backup generator to my house

stark bough
#

lol i had a cooling setup around my pc to spread air around the room as the computer folds

#

now theres no WU, it got cold real quick

#

@hushed bobcat did you get a transfer switch?

hushed bobcat
#

yes, Generac ATS

stark bough
#

how much to install the switch?

#

This house has solar. but its grid tied. no daily cycler battery.

#

so if power goes out, no power.

#

in theory we could have spent $7000 before tax credits and rebates to have one with a built in transfer switch.

hushed bobcat
stark bough
#

3 days before the pandemic announcement, we had 2 brownouts.

hushed bobcat
#

the generator hookup was $1500

#

including the switch cost

fierce steppe
#

Damn those some thicc cables

stark bough
#

so the days following, i was like 'wow, we could have used that battery pack'

hushed bobcat
#

i found it odd that they used both aluminum and copper wiring

stark bough
#

on our solar installation, we hid the thicc copper grounding rods, cause someone might decide to 'steal it'

hushed bobcat
#

i think thats 2/0 gauge wire

green monolith
#

ok who hilighted me

hushed bobcat
#

i don't think anyone in here did?

stark bough
#

if we ever got into a fight with copper vampires, i want this.

green monolith
#

ok was @meager hound

hushed bobcat
#

whats with the horse on the case?

stark bough
#

its for an electric fence

hushed bobcat
#

ahhh

green monolith
#

he wants to be a unicorn again ?

stark bough
#

yes, copper unicorn

green monolith
#

you stole his horn/rod

hushed bobcat
#

@meager hound how do you get 3 phases 120 degrees?

#

my generator can do 1 or 3 phase, i can show you the wiring diagram for it

#

@meager hound ok let me say this, i'm not an electrician

#

but as i understand it it's technically not 2 phase

green monolith
#

smacks @vague flint upwide the head with a rubber chicken

hushed bobcat
#

most ppl call it single phase 240V

green monolith
#

also seems discord servers are having API breakage

hushed bobcat
#

but i think the ppl who did my work said Split-Phase is more accurate

#

"The two 120 V AC lines are supplied to the premises from a transformer with a 240 V AC secondary winding which has a centre tap connected to ground. This results in two 120 V AC line voltages which are out of phase by 180 degrees with each other. The system neutral conductor is connected to ground at the transformer center tap. 240 V AC can be obtained by connecting the load between the two 120 V AC lines."

#

from wikipedia

green monolith
#

looks at my IRC client

hushed bobcat
#

"Pole-mounted single-phase transformer with three-wire centre-tapped "split-phase" secondary. On the three secondary terminals, the centre tap is grounded with a short strap to the transformer case."

fierce steppe
#

smacks transformer
Yeah this sucker can power up to four folding rigs

hushed bobcat
#

here is the article

#

@meager hound you know its funny, i asked and electrician in Australia for some advice on my generator hookup. We spent 2 hours trying to figure out how the phases worked in America

#

hmm

#

well what about Businesses?

#

they are 3 phase

bright basin
spark salmon
#

@fierce steppe Please don't smack the transformer...

hushed bobcat
#

@spark salmon can i shoot it instead?

bright basin
hushed bobcat
#

well we were talking about folding rigs requiring 240V or 3-phase power

green monolith

Anyone else not getting any WUs? My laptop is sitting idle since yesterday morning.

hushed bobcat
#

otherwise how could you explain the power company being able to hook up 3-phase to your house if you asked them?

green monolith
#

oh yeah i was gonna update pfsense

bright basin
#

doesn't warrant abusing it even more. plenty of channels you can move to.

#

@last imp only getting CPU WUs

green monolith

@bright basin quit trying to police the channel

hushed bobcat

@last imp I'm not getting any right now but i've been doing pretty well throughout the day

#

my space heater rig got plenty of jobs overnight, I slept well

spark salmon
#

@hushed bobcat That is correct, High voltage power lines are always 3 phase AC. That's how they are able to push power so far without needing generating plants every few miles.

stark bough

@spark salmon But Tesla is a fraud and Edison said we need a DC generator in every basement

#

Hi can anyone tell me running my i7 4700mq at 100% at near 100Β°C for about 3-4 hours is a good idea? My windows client can't get past updating and on Linux I have a WU but it's pushing my cpu to 100%, even on light folding power.

green monolith
#

the coolbits line

vague flint
#

okay, got that set

stark bough
#

finally a gpu workload.

green monolith
#

do you run X?

#

aka a GUI

vague flint
#

I have Gnome, but I don't have RDP enabled or any monitor going to it currently

stark bough
#

also that wooden pole usually indicates that its not a 'long distance transmission line'

#

aka the voltages arent insane

spark salmon
#

@meager hound Sure, but the entire point of a Pole Pig transformer is to convert high voltage to residential voltage. It's a Step-Down transformer.

#

Bigger winding to smaller winding within the transformer

hushed bobcat
#

@desert sparrow i would not run 100C 24/7, personally i run 85C MAX

stark bough
#

fun fact, those topmost lines are for for lightning prevention

green monolith
spark salmon
#

The power line for a single street is a small run and goes back very quickly to a high voltage line somewhere

green monolith
#

for some GPU control

stark bough
#

the ones on the insulators, thats your three phase.

desert sparrow
#

@nextalcupfan alike I said its just for 3-4 hours so I can finish this WU. I feel like the Linux control needs some optimisation.

hushed bobcat
#

@meager hound so basically it takes 1 high power phase and splits it into 2 low power phases?

stark bough
#

well, its still 'kill you voltage'

bright basin
#

cue the 'it's not the voltage that kills you'

green monolith
#

its the current!

stark bough
#

Wats u say?

hushed bobcat
#

my house is 200 amps

green monolith
#

weak

#

you need 600

hushed bobcat
#

i think thats about the biggest you can get in a home

green monolith
#

i want 500

#

so I can run ALL my servers

#

even the super EOL ones

#

from 2003

vague flint
#

Currently setting up RDP/VNC so I'll be able to do that in a minute Sakura

spark salmon
#

@meager hound The transformer's job is to reduce the 7,200 volts down to the 240 volts that makes up normal household electrical service.

vague flint
#

and that's on 1/3 speed

stark bough
#

amperage no like long transmission.

spark salmon
#

No it doesn't look it up

hushed bobcat
spark salmon
#

Yeah see, the line on your street going to your pole pig is 7200 volts, It gets STEPED-0OWN by the STEP DOWN transformer to 240 Service for your home

stark bough
#

if you want to learn something new and weird about electricty transmission. learn about the problem of snakes causing shorts in substations

#

birds nest in substation. snakes like the warmth of substations, and the food.

snek goes up for a snack. snek bridges two bus bars. snek goes poof.

wintry dock

why the fuck are we talking about power lines?

vague flint

Lol @hushed bobcat thats kinda where I got the idea

stark bough
#

@wintry dock 120 vs 240 for folding

spark salmon
#

All I've got is an evga gold 850watt and my monthly power bill is below $100. I can't imagine having the money to worry about my home service being sufficient to fold with. Jebus lol

why the fuck are we talking about power lines?
Isn't this channel supposed to talk about F@H?

spark salmon
#

@meager hound but you realize conceptually, that the line on the pole running down your neighborhood needs to carry enough power to provide very house on its run with 240volts of service right?

#

wintry dock

pine cradle

if you have to worry about the cost of folding, you probably have more important things to address before you fold.

green monolith

so my power bill will cost 400/month if i put more servers to work

wintry dock

240v is more deadly but at least the plugs are safer

good luck with keeping it cool, but awesome @buoyant pumice

@buoyant pumice I see you are also going plus ultra

hushed bobcat

@buoyant pumice little tip, leave 1 core free for each GPU in your system

buoyant pumice

hushed bobcat

so dont run all 24 threads with your 1080

is that in advanced settings?

hushed bobcat

it should auto config to 23

hushed bobcat

i used to use Artic Silver 5

then i switched to Noctua NT-H1

#

@weary elm you can set the number of threads F@H uses

green monolith

well to each their own i have a lot of systems so i get alot at once

hushed bobcat
#

i bought alot of noctua CPU coolers and each one came with a decent sized tube

green monolith

and ~14 bucks for 50g of the stuff aint a bad deal

#

perfectly fine in servers and destops w/o crazy OC

spark salmon
#

Replacing Thermal paste won't improve performance unless the core temps are rising and your being throttled - Please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think its necessarily a "6 - month" rule thing

green monolith
#

lol i replace mine every couple of years if i am lazy

spark salmon
#

Yeah, Like... If I have no temp issues I go like 1-2 years

hushed bobcat
#

i had rising temps after about a year with Artic Silver 5

#

it was drying out

#

the Noctua stuff doesnt seem to do that

green monolith
#

if i see rising temps

#

and an alarm is not going off

#

i will check/change it

spark salmon
#

Yeah that's all I'm saying. If you see rising temps then replace thermal paste... if you don't then its unnecessary maintenance most likely, imo

is it ok to pause and fold to reset next attempt?

is it ok to pause and fold to reset next attempt?
@buoyant pumice yep, but only when your waiting time up to hours per try

#

since servers are being overload by how many new wu popping up

buoyant pumice
#

ah ok

#

I got to 40 mins and done it

#

my bad

#

@mild kiln 9900k can be split into 8 and 8

#

theres 16 cores, not 15

mild kiln
#

yeah but I need a seperate core open for RTX

#

according to FAH

rich depot
#

no you dont

#

damn, not sure why folding is going better, but LTT is going to overtake overclockers.com in about 4 hours

#

I have an RTX 2080 ti and it's folding with no reserved cores

mild kiln
#

alright I'll try that with my 2080 TI

rich depot
#

I set a 16 core chunk, and my 2080ti basically squeezes in

#

they don't lock the GPU with a CPU thread

#

it's like saying games can only one 1 thread

rich depot
#

if u have 4 cores, do 4, not 3, and so on don't listen to fah stuff @mild kiln

#

unless u have a pentium paired with a 2080ti, then u might not want a task on that pentium

mild kiln
#

nah

#

9900K too

bright basin
#

it's like saying games can only one 1 thread
@rich depot it's not that they can only use 1 thread, but that there's just 1 main thread.

rotund flume
#

so if i run cpu only wu then go full send and force f@h use all my cores right?

buoyant pumice
#

btw how long does it take to see your score on the leaderboard?

chrome iris
buoyant pumice
#

how many watts is being pulled?

chrome iris
#

about 650

#

goes up and down 650 higest i have seen

buoyant pumice
#

thats fairly decent tbh

chrome iris
#

i under clocked the r9 280x was getting close to 100c

#

My text is red what does that mean

spring jewel
#

On discord? or folding@home?

placid furnace
#

its red

#

thats it

chrome iris
#

discord. K its just a random color change

spring jewel
#

When the text is red in discord, that means the message didnt send

chrome iris
#

oh tnx

rich depot
#

@bright basin doesn't amtter

#

if it needs a main thread, it can push the other tasks out of that thread

#

it scales, you don't need a dedicated thread

#

all your doing is getting an odd number and not getting WUs

#

650 watts? thats more than my power supply πŸ˜‚

solid thunder
#

same

rich depot
#

btw, if we get lucky we overtake overclocking.com the next update from that extremeoverclocking site. I believe they update every 3 hours and the last update said it would take 3,5 hours to overtake them

chrome iris
#

I have a Corsair rm 850 power supply been going strong for the last 5-6 years

rich depot
#

nice, I think I have the 550 or the 650, also corsair RM

#

whats tpf mean in folding program?

#

time per frame

#

according to the first google hit... @rich depot

#

ok thanks

#

trying to figure out why i complete wus but dont get points and they sit sending in my program for a long time

#

wrong username/team/passcode?

#

or just gotta wait a bit, its all slow

bright basin
#

@bright basin doesn't amtter
if it needs a main thread, it can push the other tasks out of that thread
@rich depot it gets to a point where the communication between threads becomes a bottleneck.

rich depot
#

not really

#

not for folding.

bright basin
#

this rant is about games, not folding

rich depot
#

fuck games

#

I'm saying, u don't need to reserve a thread for foldign

#

just like you have have light work running int he background of your CPU while gaming.

silver wing
#

I didn't know you could play with the proteins in FAH...

bright basin
#

you referenced people saying that 'games can only use 1 thread', that's how this started.

#

and of course you don't have to reserve a thread, because processors slice tasks up so they're not completely blocking eachother.

meager spruce
#

I'm still trying to figure out how the locally displayed points work. 67,808 + 82,848 (estimated) = 150,656 but now my local says 84,821. Does the estimated WU points in the log mean that's my estimated total or that's the estimated points I get for that 1 WU?

rich depot
#

alright, how about ''games need to use at least one thread all to itself''

#

what is it about people so picky about one phrase and missing the big picture

bright basin
#

they'll never get to keep it all to themselves because cpu will switch between threads

rich depot
#

exactly, u don't need windows to specifically reserve a bloody thread for gaming

#

i have two 1070s in one rig yet only one ever gets folded on ?

void walrus
#

I think you need to add it somehow in settings

rich depot
#

yeah, advanced control, add a slot. also if you have sli enabled, turn it off

#

no sli slot is there just no wus ever hit the gpu

rancid frost
#

Holy balls, I just got two consecutive WUs.

#

Also, my system's folding fine on both GPUs with SLI enabled, what gives there?

void walrus
#

I lost my cpu WU SadChamp

rancid frost
#

That sucks.

#

Network problem?
