My man's was goneeee lmaooo
I hope the hangover ain't bad brother!
Got a question
Ive asked it before but, how do I view the web panel for FAH when using it on Ubuntu Server?
if i recall
there is a config file you have to modify to set up remote access
i think its in /etc
set stuff like allowed IPs (or an entire subnet)
password
uhh
i know their is more but it escapes me
@hushed bobcat Youre the same guy that responded to me before
Only stuff in config
I think you have to add the lines
If I recall I set it up once in the gui and just copied it over to new installs
@slim mortar i just looked in my config folder on my windows folding client and they have a sample config
bottom 2 are granting remote FAHControl and Remote Web Access
pretty sure you need both?
This might only be for windows
im pretty sure the config parameters are the same
I'll try
FAH is not very clear on this and if they really wanna expand on this, they need to give more information
Hold on
Thats a bit weird,
The whole config file is showing up now
Maybe I looked at a different config file
maybe you found the example config?
Not sure
there is also a folder called config
This time I didnt start FAH automatically
with a bunch of configs with numbers attached
I killed FAH after I had installed it
But now that I didnt automatically start it, I guess this is why
Works
nice
Nice
no team 😦
I like how I blurred my name out last time but now I forgot to
I dont really care
Yeah no team
Fine, Ill join 223518
Are you proud of me
You have to fold more to send points to LTT
Really? Didn't know
They don't transfer
also Dom you should look into the Dark web control
So really slow, but still
Unicorn WU awesome
X to doubt
well maybe first reported to Folding Lar Systems
Probably
that data only gets sent if you use the chrome extension
do you have it?
Well I am never gonna show
I am using an Ubuntu Server so I dont think I can get a chrome extension
you just need it on the web
so however you are accessing the remote web control
just do that but on chrome with the extension
kinda sucks it has to be up all the time though, otherwise it cant send the results data
hmm
Ive also been folding on an old pc these past few weeks so I got the extension on there
dual core pentium
well usage is just going to be based on the number of threads
since you have 2 threads assigned and a dual core Pentium its going to use everything it can
though light might lower the priority in windows?
also you should probably put the old pc on the team too
well i always go full
light just disables GPU and only runs while not active i think
so medium or full
and if you need to do something intensive on the pc i just manually pause or finish
Theres no GPU and its ran separately from my main pc
Heh. I’m running folding@home on my 2015 Macbook Air and it has sustained 100-103 degree temps consistently for the last 24 hours lmao
I can hear the solder joints crying
lmao yeah, it’s running a dual-core i5 lol
Doesn't the Air use the chassis to dissipate heat?
I don't think it even has a fan
I could be thinking about something else though
yes and no
only the most recent M1 model has no fan
However, earlier models have a single fan with a single heatpipe running to a tiny radiator in front of the blower fan
double unicorn woo
also just in case someone doesnt know, old mining cards make pretty good folding cards
especially old ones that have too little VRAM for etherium mining
i bought 4 for $100
Hi, I have a few boinc-related questions.
First, is there an LTT team like there is for folding, and how do I join it?
Secondly, why can’t I join the World Community Grid project?
(just fyi the Macbook above isn’t my only folding/BOINC PC, and it is one of the least powerful I have. My main, and also home-use/gaming PC is a 12700KF/16GB DDR5/3070 overclocked)
@primal haven LTT has teams for most of the active projects (or whatever we've done during the boinc event) but as these are project specific you'll have to search linustechtips_team or something similar. WCG is currently doing a server migration so no work has been distributed since end of feb and likely won't be back online until the end of the month.
Plus I have some office PCs on 4th and 6th gen quad-core i5 systems
oh neat, I thought I heard something about a server migration. Thanks so much for clearing that up 🙂
I gave one system to my sister, because she needed a more powerful computer and it was her birthday New Years, but I’m in the process of setting up a formidable folding array lol
Every halfway decent PC I find in ewaste goes into the Wall of Towers lmao, most I find are HP Elitedesks or similar.
unfortunately the wall of towers is only at 4 members 😦
but it’s growing steadily lol
team 223518 in your folding app
Good on the WCG team for posting more frequent news, has been quite interesting to catch up on
But then theres this 😔
All compounds ordered thus far are being tested, and internally we are happy with the data we're receiving and excitedly planning next steps. However, our major collaborator for purchasing compounds is Enamine, based in Kyiv (https://enamine.net/). Current geopolitical events have obviously impacted their ability to provide compounds. We hope for their safety throughout the conflict, and encourage you to check out their twitter (@EnamineLtd) if you're interested.
They were asking about BOINC
i’m already part of the folding team, like chaozbandit said it’s for boinc
never got on that BOINC boat aint it just for finding extraterrestrial stuff?
It's a bunch of stuff! Sciences, maths, medicines. SETI was sunsetted a while ago
no it’s basically just different folding
yea i was confused with SETI
heeey
100% gonna forget
Also totally forgot we did sidock last biathlon and i could have been doing that in the weeks WCG has been down, bugger
what does bionc stand for? lego bionicle? (plz say yes)
Definitely
shhhh
https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/BOINC-Berkeley-Open-Infrastructure-for-Network-Computing
omg omg ok i knew it. whats yalls fav sets
It might also mean Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing
lol
What is folding at home
a distributed computing project that researches cures for diseases and effectiveness of vaccines
Folding@home (FAH or F@h) is a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, including the process of protein folding and the movements of proteins implicated in a variety of diseases.…
Ohhh
RIP overshot global 69420 on boinc
Can you tell when I turned my 3090 Ti on for folding?
shouldn't be, also i would consider turning off CPU folding @opal nest
gtx 1650?
if so what CPU are you folding on?
I was folding on 5950X @ 4.6 GHz all core and it only yields like 500k PPD
only? I had 2 8 core 16 thread Xeons going and it was like 220-250k PPD
E5-2667 v2's
that being said its small peanuts compared to GPU PPD
What’s folding and boinc?

Ohh so it’s like using your computer to help research for diseases
I think I have heard of this before
Yep its exactly that, Linus has done a few videos on it
I will try it out also watch those vids
What the minnium requirements I have a old server that I barely use anymore
Ideally you wouldnt want anything older than from the maxwell gpu era, power efficiency is pretty important

Workunit management, website and forums, and APIs have been subjected to unit tests, integration testing, and manual inspection to validate previous WCG functionality. Over 80% of tests and checks have been completed successfully in the Krembil QA environment to date.
Just joined the Folding Team I average 1-2Mil PPD :). I have been folding for OCN but seems like its all but dead.
Pausing for a bit today to do some dusting. Here's the current stats.
3 mil ppd not bad
folding to heat the room up
So summer is coming and the province is pushing a new ultra low electricity rate for EV owners.... hmmm
does anyone use Science united or another account manager with BOINC?
Version 2.0 has just hit the Chrome Extension Store and is PUBLIC!
NEW - Timer (Time of Use) shifting allows you to set a time to start folding and finish folding so you can fold at off peak power usage times or to manage seasonal heat.
Ooh fancy
I had issues with boinc and folding in the past where it wouldn't turn my screen back on sometimes. It lead me to never fold again. anybody else have this issue? and is it gone now
I'd like to fold again with my cpu
Can't say I've had that specific issue, most of the time its related to the built in screensavers or some other resource allocation. Would help if we knew what hardware you're contributing
Never heard of this issue
I previously used a i5 2600 and a 4590. I didn't trust it enough to install it on my main 5800x system.
tbh I've had it on my 8350/1700x/3900x systems for years without any concerns
oh nice
Oops looks like the team forgor to sign up for boinc pentathlon this year 😂 I'll probably still continue SiDock for the time being until WCG is back up, but if anyone wants to follow along with the event (the rest announced later):
Obstacle run: universe@home
Javelin: numberfields@home
Cross country: primegrid
I can't wait until I have a test rig new enough to GPU fold again, BOINC is so weird
While we continue working hard to restart WCG as soon as possible, we want to provide an update on the current status. We are currently facing unexpected issues with the load balancer - a small but critical component that ensures science servers will cope with increased workloads. If we do not resolve this in time, it would prevent us from restarting on May 9th. We will provide an update on the result of our efforts to resolve the issue Sunday evening.
Summer folding sprint soon
Summer folding sprint, Part one... coming June We will have a two part summer folding sprint this year, this will consist of two week long events during summer with the first coming next month. Keep an eye out for more details and eventually the event thread.
@humble rover I was just coming to do that, thanks
https://linustechtips.com/topic/1429844-summer-folding-sprint-2022-part-one/
The new Folding event thread is now live!

So about the upcoming event 🤔

That's actually a good price right?
Prices have been so messed up I can't even remember what they are supposed to be
I do still want to get one of those SuperMicro 2U GPU servers and fill it with minimum Pascal generation quadros
a 3070 costs close to 1000 dollars here in thailand so prices kinda still screwed prices
well in costa rica it was like 1200 for a rtx 2070 so it screwed here to
Aha should mention its in CAD, but on paper it looks only moderately faster than a 1080? dunno if its worth the hassle but the cards from the titan xp era are neat to own
I have a vega 64 and waterblock sitting in storage I might play around with
Quadros are usually a bit more power efficient than GeForce cards though right?
Also they are made to run 100% 24/7
I suppose so yeah more efficient but less draw/clk speed overall
but for folding that doesnt really matter though?
Just started folding with f@h
Laptop loud but tenps good
welcome to the team
personally i dont like folding on Laptops, 99% of the time they just aren't made for sustained high load
true, but i have a fairly high performance cooling solution, and gpu, so i figured why not while i sleep perhaps
shoould be fine if temps stay good right?
i had a laptop where either the chipset or power delivery overheated and failed
CPU and GPU temps were always in check
The power brick did get hot

The revised date for launch will be May 24th, 2022, after Victoria day.
Finally, we were able to test BOINC client connections to our servers from newly created/registered accounts. While we were able to contact the BOINC scheduler and check for available workunits, we are now diagnosing a failure to validate the project key that occured in some cases.
On the server side, we were able to verify the flow of data from our research partners into the workunit management layer in our stack. Thus, this part is fully validated, and will proceed smoothly upon restart. We continue to assess readiness of the workunit management stack for launch together with the website.
Thank you
WCG Tech team
ohh wow
i actually got Ubuntu server folding with GPU's
honestly didnt think it would work with no GUI at all...
i only installed the FAHClient.deb
and used nano to edit the config to allow remote control with FAHControl on my main Windows PC
Let’s see if my server will run bonic
idk if is a scam or a great deal
I have A) removed my side panel, and B) pointed my AC at it
I have a computer fan blowing cold air into the system
I've seen it get up to 4.7 million PPD in this configuration
i reapplied the thermal paste on my GTX 1080Ti
nice
something to play in the background for people with to many monitors
o
Summer folding sprint part one is over
Oh.... I forgor 💀
just in time too, next week its supposed to be 95-105F
i think i missed the first half a day
I've just been real busy and havent been on the forum 😢
folding is so warm
what is folding and boinc, just a quick rundown
They're programs that use your computer's cpu or gpu for research
Ik folding utilizes it for prion folding research, which helps scientists understand how various diseases work to help develop a cure
I assume boinc is similar
BOINC is really just a client that can be used for a lot of different project. The BOINC client itself just provides the functionality to communicate to subscribed projects, download workunits and make sure to execute these in a secure manner
Folding@Home uses their own client that is not based on BOINC
Basically it runs simulations of atoms which make up proteins which do things
:D
Kinda late to the party I guess but yeah
Forum and website for worldcommunitygrid.org are up again. The BOINC servers are not ready yet:
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/article.s?articleId=771
Aw they nuked the migration updates feed
i just found the LTT Summer folding sprint 2022 results, only 43 people showed up? that doesnt feel like alot to me
This was a lovely little sprint we had, an amazing turn out when you take into account the current cost of living crisis and to say we produced over 2.7 billion points and that something we all be proud of. No matter if you were a whale or a sardine, you were a part of this achieve and for that, ...
Oop did I forgor again
I'm on the team, but I didn't do the sprint :/
I would've taken around 19th place if I had though
I kinda didn't realize I'd even be on the charts
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/article.s?articleId=772
While I wish WCG downtime was vacation time for all of us in the lab, in reality it's been crunch time as we try to work through all of the models you all have generated and gear up toward the reopening of the firehose of data that is the WCG.
...
All of this is to say, while we know volunteers have been itching to get started again, from the perspective of the science this is perfectly timed, and we're excited to catch the next wave of data you send our way.
Moving soon, so folding is secondary at this time. However, I'm moving somewhere with central air.
And a balcony.
An enclosed balcony.
I fully intend to make use of it at opportune times.
Garage is my spot in the winter
why doest it crash
A (very) likely cause is some kind of a bug or that it's trying to call an invalid function or some function/method returns invalid value.
the same message because it looked like the reply wasn't added
or invalid drivers, my amd drivers were buggy cus i didnt update and it just froze or was at 1 fps
Latest news about the status of World Community Grid (from the official forum of the project):
Hi everyone,
Since many of you have been asking for minor updates to stay informed about the current state of WCG, here is what the team has been working on.
Recent efforts to restart have been unsuccessful. You may have noticed in your BOINC client some messages from the scheduler, which was a byproduct of the successful steps in the restart procedure. However, we have been unable to queue workunits packaged for distribution to clients into the primary scheduler node and are working to resolve what is hopefully the final blocking issue to workunit distribution. We have identified as a result of this issue an opportunity to create a more efficient queue to allocate and distribute work among volunteer devices, which we will release in a future update. but it has been taking time to implement.
Happy Independence Day to all of the American crunchers!
is this decent
Hard to say without context
im running folding at home with a 3600xt and 3060ti
3060ti should be doing much more unless you've screencapped it right when it started
Or you got unlucky with project
huh thats weird
that screenshot was taken after folding overnight
maybe its my overclock?
So it was not active here? Probably easier just to send the full window
im running it now and its back to 700000
im also folding to dogecoinfah so that might be why
Yeah if you arent giving it full utilization it will be lower
Your card should be doing over 2m on this project
GPU/CPU PPD performance information for Folding@Home project #18447, INFLUENZA research as of 7/21/2022.
i am putting full usage to it
maybe its displaying points per WU and not ppd?
i figured it out
i needed to put a passkey in
im at 4.4 mil now
lol I always forgor to check passkey and its solution majority of time
Passkey is important
