I actually was not aware that Tencent had purchased a majority stake in Discord, that is good to know. Tbh the video just reinforced what I already knew other than that piece of info. I realized how deeply-rooted Discord was when back in 2016 or 2017 I replaced the SSD in a friend's laptop and installed a fresh OS, then as soon as I downloaded Discord it automatically signed in to his account. Wasn't even the same OS, it just tied itself that deeply.

I have never done any research on this, but during my business law classes in college I remember the professor & book said contracts of adhesion like this are often easily over turned / ignored by the judge. Meaning waiver to class action lawsuit for example could be struck down by the judge saying no way did users 1. Read this and 2. They had no chance to negotiate, it was a take it or leave it kind of contract.

Linus said it's because some viewers, after finding out what the video was about in the first 10 seconds, then couldn't wait another 10 seconds or so for the intro to play, that they would stop watching the rest of the video. And therefore their view count was going down. I'll let that sink in for a minute while you realize how short an attention span some people have. im the same guy who reccomended TP Link Kasa yesterday, just saw the latest wan show and wanted to ssay the FW update will not fix your fade on/fade off issue. It's a hardware limitation. It does not have a relay, it has to fade in and out. It can fade in/out as fast as it can but thats not going to be good enough for a smart bulb. Bathroom fans usually dont work for the same reason so if you want to do auto-on for humidity you have to get a non dimmer switch

also i reccomended tp link kasa in the wrong channel so ill reccomend it here: they are wifi only not zwave so if thats a dealbreaker that makess sense but they have a 100% local API that works with home assistant natively. Even if tp link disappeared forever you would still be able to operate your switches just the same. I'm not sure if they allow updating the firmware with a file directly but they do OTA updates. They feel nice and look nice

Actually now that I think about it there's a workaround. You could connect both the neutral and the load to neutral and the line to line. Then connect the actual load from the light to the line. It's a bit jank but I'm sure it'd work. Basically the socket would be always powered and the switch would control nothing. Then you could just sync the switch with the bulb in home assistant. That way the electronics in the switch are irrelevant because they're not actually controlling anything

it would technically be possible for this to be done in firmware (the switch would just always provide 100% power and only send commands to home assistant) but ive never seen a light switch with a software option to do this because its rediculously niche

I used in wall switches before and the problem was they fried after a power outage and overall experience just isn’t as smooth as smart bulbs like hue.

I’d argue hue works so well I don’t care that it doesn’t work with none hue bulbs, the only place I have left one of these smart switches is my garage where it has those old tube style bulbs. Although one day I’d love to get rid of those for standard bulbs.

Also it’s not like hue is vendor lock, for example I still use a z-wave in wall switch, so mix and match as needed. 😁 (hue can’t control my in walls, but I can toggle both from hub/controller or local api)

Your smart switch can light up all the same, I think it’s a bit odd to assume shutting off that small portion of your wiring is any additional safety. All of your outlets are receiving power 24/7 same with many other parts of your house.

No problem with going with smart switches vs bulbs, I mentioned I did the same at first and then had issues and realized how much more annoying replacement is when they have issues. However I wouldn’t make any argument over safety or anything like that for a switch vs bulb.

You can grab white hue bulbs as low as $12, so it’s honestly so easy and cheap that I personally will never go back to in wall switches except for special fixtures that don’t use normal bulbs.

The main problem I had with smart bulbs was the ones I had, if you turned the light switch off they forgot their current setting and switched back to normal white

So any custom coloring you had set would be gone if your Luddite sibling walked around turning light switches off, pretty much had to tape them on

A couple Wan shows ago, YT recommendations was brought up and people keep in getting recommended old Wan shows and lots of old Wan shows have borked video.

January 24, 2014 was pretty bad as far as video corruption. Lol YT thought I'd like it tho.
