Welp, Norton Crypto is now officially bundled with Norton 360 and takes away 15% of your device's mining profits if you decide to turn it on...EVEN if you opt out, the NCrypt executable stays in your programs folder; who knows if it'd automatically run after an update gets pushed?
I'm aware the whole NCrypto ordeal was revealed half a year ago, but this should be addressed in light of the recent changes imo. Searching "Norton Crypto" on Twitter is also juicy (not to mention countless of new articles and videos)
Oh, not to forget the many threads where people complained about not being able to withdraw coins from Norton and end up getting ignored or thread closed, or the times where that 15% fee is not really "15%" and all...

Exactly. No such device existed and never would. Majority of the risks are due to the already existing operating systems, and no matter how secure the company may market it as, that's all it is; a marketing scheme.
There will be developers who spend hours on end researching vulnerabilities for the sake of the challenge. All it takes is an oversight of a singular line of code to allow for vulnerabilities like injection.
Tl;dr frameworks hardware motivates companies to follow suit. worm/virus are majorly software, not hardware. Different topics.

Watching wan show and think I have a shady way to provide information in the apple app about how to pay for floatplane through the website (keep in mind I don't know shit about app programming), is it possible to have the text for the error message that's displayed in the app make a call/pull the text that would be displayed from a webpage? So you could have up text that gets it through verification and when it's approved just change the text on the webpage it pulls from so it says "go to the website to subscribe"

There actually is a single AIB lineup at MSRP, which is the Gigabyte Eagle line. They’re few and far between, though they do exist. Not every model in the lineup is at MSRP, though many are.

Your best bet if you have a Best Buy near you is to get an FE card when they do the occasional drops, but tbh it's been longer than usual since they did that last so idk what's going on with it, maybe waiting for the 3050 + 3090 Ti launch?

Best Buy drops are primarily online, for pickup. Those are botted despite efforts to curb the practice with a custom queue solution. They don’t have reasonable limits in place, so the same scalpers end up with cards time and time again in high population centers.

They have their occasional in-person drops, though those are often plagued by scalper rings who tend to disregard decency, cut lines and even get violent.

#

IMO, while FE pricing is understandably desirable, you’re better off paying a bit extra for an AIB card at a Micro Center (assuming you live near one) than repeatedly wasting your time with Best Buy drops. Don’t undervalue your time, and potentially health if you’re camping out for in-person drops.

Just had to show up a few hours early, no 3080 unfortunately (that's like a 12 hour commitment lol) but 3090 is what I got, ended up trading that for a 6900XT Halo edition which tbh I'll probably just sell bc it's worth a ton...friend of mine got a 3060 Ti, other got a 3070 Ti, we were vibin 😎

The chips themselves are not subject to the tariffs, as they’re manufactured outside of China. The tariffs are applied because many of the AIBs do their manufacturing/assembly in China. Nvidia/AMD have no bearing on this whatsoever.

I mean in terms of youtube I can't really disagree its free cause theres ads, if you don't want ads the none "piracy" way is to subscribe or there is youtube premium right?
Given for LTT they also have their sponsors, which pays them. Youtube on the other hands, who hosts all the videos, not exactly going to be pleased on the ads being circumvented that help pay for it.

The online ad industry has far to many bad actors, that use ad delivery as a means to cause damage with trackers, trojans, cookies, and more.

I'm kinda curious how the dislikes went, if any LMG employee is able to post that statistic off of Studio.
Extension shows a ratio of 1 dislike every 3 likes (6.5k, 2.1k), but that can always be off by a bit.

Watching youtube in web browser is optional. I can watch youtube in vlc or kodi without ads. I can write my own youtube client and legally using youtube api without ads. Ads are part of unmodified website which i can legally modify for personal use. Therefore youtube ads are optional and cannot be count as lost revenue

Omg you are missing the point. Youtube ads are bound to unmodified youtube website. Web browser is just client... google dont have any power to force you which client you use. Videos are public available by api. Therefore if youtube videos are not restricted and not encrypted you cannot call it piracy.

Yeah its people using "piracy" in a legal sense versus people using "piracy" in a common usage sense versus people using "piracy" in a ethics oriented sense. Piracy of all 3 senses may sometimes be ethically acceptable depending on ones morale compass, but the ethically acceptable cases are still technically piracy if they fit the respective defintion. As far as I interpret things, linus is arguing its technically piracy in the third sense, but implying he doesnt care and its probably an acceptable case of piracy.

I believe advertisements are themselves ethically wrong. They're a form of propaganda designed to psychologically manipulate people into buying things they don't need. Moreover, they're an unwelcome waste of time. According to a quick google search, the average person spends 4 YEARS of their lives watching ads (caveat: I can't be bothered to fact-check this).

If a shoe company can only stay in business by relying on child labor--something we all can agree is ethically wrong--maybe that company shouldn't be in business. If a YouTube channel can only stay in business by running ads--something I think is ethically wrong--then maybe that channel shouldn't be in business either.

I think advertisements are wrong, but this is the society we live in. There are many things that happen in our society I think are wrong. If I could wave a magic wand to fundamentally change how it was organized, I'd do it, for this and those other things.

As it is, I do what I can: I make a conscious effort to live ethically within its boundaries. I pay for a NY Times subscription, I've spent hundreds of dollars at LLTStore to support them (much more than offsetting any revenue they've lost from ads I've avoided), and would be willing to donate on Patreon for other channels I particularly care about.

That same moral barometer tells me that the ethical thing is to not consume advertising whenever possible. Maybe your barometer tells you otherwise, in which case let's agree to disagree.

Second, I agree, our society is organized in such a way that a new business probably needs to run ads. We should organize our society differently. We also organize our society such that major corporations have incentives to kill our planet with pollution. That's another thing we should change. We used to organize our society around owning slaves. That's something we thankfully did change.
Just because something serves a purpose in the current structures doesn't mean it's not wrong.

While this is an extreme thought experiment, data brokers are the hellscape that is the foundation for modern web adverts and could go pretty dark. It doesn't seem entirely fiction that we could potentially be in a place one day in the future where an employer could "buy" the browsing habits of a potential employee collected by data broker is pretty dystopian.

For example, I have zero problem with say putting a camera in every single traffic light in the (any) country, and using every single one of them to fine drivers for 'minor' infringements. But there should be severe, severe penalties for say... the cop who accesses that data to spy on his ex-wife, and that's the problem with a lot of data collection and retention. It's not the fundamental and original reason which is objectionable. It's the mis-use. But people confuse that with the potential for mis-use, which is really just pointing to the fact that the penalties for that kind of stuff aren't high enough.

I think if the true value of that data were more transparent to consumers, and the merchant not being able to use or sell it were passed on in the cost of products transparently, people would be in for a rude shock. And I don't just mean companies being able to go "This will cost $20, or $19 if you let us use your data" at some ridiculously under-valued price, when they know they'll make $10 profit from using that data.

I believe advertising itself is inherently immoral. Not just advertising that is manipulative or deceptive or unethical in some other special sense. ALL advertising by its nature is immoral.

People typically break advertising into three categories: informative, manipulative, and deceptive. I think this is a false distinction. Informative advertising supposedly appeals to reason ("my product exists and you should buy it for reason X"). In practice this doesn't really exist though. There's always an attractive model holding the product, which creates an association with (a word I apparently can't post without being auto-modded). And/or there's subtle music playing underneath that changes our emotional state. Even the font that's used manipulates us in a non-rational way. As McLuhan put it, "the medium is the message."

What would an informational ad be anyway? Compare the first 3/4 of a Viagra ad, where an attractive older couple walk in a meadow at dusk while a narrator croons at us, with the last 1/4 where the narrator speeds through the legally-required listing of side effects (which is still narrated over the same pleasing imagery). An informational ad would be entirely like that last 1/4 of the ad, for both the positives and negatives, giving appropriate weight to both so to convey the reality of how good the product actually is, without the manipulative imagery, soundtrack, and intonation. Laughable to even imagine, isn't it?

Even assuming purely informational advertising existed, and ignoring the manipulation inherent in the medium, it would still be manipulative-by-omission. Except when legally mandated like above, ads don't highlight the negative aspects of their product, when they do they don't give them appropriate rhetorical weight, and they certainly don't highlight the positives of competing products, in order to portray a full picture of the product's actual merit.

This is supposedly justified by being part of an advocational system where it's incumbent on other companies to sell themselves. This works in our legal system because the prosecution and defense have equal time and a jury that's willing to listen to both sides. This doesn't translate to advertising though. Imagine if the prosecution got to talk more during a trial because it had more money. I'm also very much not a willing jury.

So why is manipulation bad anyway? Manipulating people treats them as a means rather than an end-unto-themselves. Being-treated-as-a-means is not something I would will on myself, and so it's unethical to do it to others. What is "being treated as a means"? When manipulating someone (e.g. lying), this uses them as a means to achieving an end (changing their behavior).

But more than that, generally speaking, manipulation interferes with individual positive freedom: free actions are caused by a person acting from moral laws they have chosen. Manipulation interferes with the choosing of those moral laws, and so interferes with our moral autonomy.

How does it do that? At its core manipulative advertising boils down to a variation of Sprite's ad "Obey your thirst": "Obey your happiness." In other words: follow your dopamine rather than your reason. This is the opposite of autonomy; it's heteronomy, and it's targeted at convincing people to abandon their reason and instead follow pleasure, which would undermine a person's ability to set their own moral code and follow it.

I think this was in the latest show but they were talking about wether or not they sleep their computers. I know it wouldn’t work with their case since they need to remote in reliably, but I’ve started using hibernate over sleep. It started because my computer used to wake up from sleep too easily but I’ve also noticed some additional benefits of it being quieter and also the peripherals staying power down more consistently

Don’t know if this is the right place, but a youtube photography channel i fallow was attacked by a fake account that spammed his comments with a bs offer. His response details the reason i think youtube will eventually go under and we will have to pirate the wan show. M1 series SOC is LPDDR5 which isn't modular, the Apple SSDs live in the secure enclave, even the 2019 uses stupid OEM only Apple NGFF drives, you can boot off NVMe elsewhere but not off the internal drives so if you can upgrade them, Apple tax. CPU won't be modular, and thus far none of the M1s have supported eGPUs and there's still one last Intel Mac Pro which seems moot if the Apple Silicon was modular.

I mean Antec as I remember them were basically a quality of PSU barely a level above a chinese no-name PSU, gauranteed to be short-lived and fail eventually, but the gap in quality between them and the truly terrible ones, and again in price to the reputable brands (eg, Silverstone) was so great that you basically always bought cheap Antec PSUs that you knew would only last 3 years.

Random tidbit related to Newegg. I think in 2016 i got a mobo from them and i did something wrong (can't remember how) but the pins got bent badly. I support chatted or emailed or called or something and they told me to just return it. I returned it got a full refund. Definitely was my fault though
