It's weird for me being so far out on it, I switched over a decade ago now, so for me I actually feel more of that pain when I have to use a Windows system these days.

like I've used Linux on and off for about 7 years or smth like that, but last time I've booted into Windows was a year and a half ago

Yeah, I'm sure there will be some good insights. There are definitely rough edges and things to know ahead-of-time.

I definitely agree with Linus that way too much of the time when you search for how to do something in Linux the answer is "run this script" or "run these commands", with little explanation of what they are doing or security considerations.

It's a balancing act, of course. People don't want to find detailed deep dives into systems and how they work when they are just trying to solve an issue and use their computer.

but in general it's got a lot better at "just working" these days.

It'll be very interesting to see how the Steam Deck affects things. I can definitely imagine people just running it on there, then after getting used to it being more willing to jump ship next time they have to think about buying a Windows license or whatever.

Go into these menus and further menus and press these buttons is the same tier of explanation however. Anyone who has interest should imho just do the swap and stick with it for a couple of weeks. When an issue arises, go lookup online what's going on like most people did when they learned their first os, or are jumping to a new one they're unfamiliar with. Everyone I know who's done that for 2 weeks is pretty good after that first bump.

I'm also interested in steamdeck improving linux gaming popularity. I make games and have no issue doing linux builds, I actually work on linux and do linux first builds.. so that'll give me the smallest and most insignificant edge lol

So... I saw that LTT are doing a 'let's daily drive linux' challenge... by coincidence, i switched to full time linux on my home desktop like 2 weeks ago... thought I might air some of my thoughts just in case others had any helpful hints or criticisms

• Scroll wheel speed under KDE is just plain borked, and the fixes are a pain in the ass - it just doesn't work well
• Gaming has been a flawless experience, no issues yet in any game... and that is despite the fact that I went with the ultimate fudgery... I'm using the same NTFS ssd that has my games on it from windows and just told steam on linux that it was a steamapps library... it just works lol
• AMD drivers all work perfectly as far as I can see
• audio device switching 'just works' and it's way better than windows... I switch between bluetooth speaker, headphones and have many input sources that I switch between all day long depending on which meeting I'm dialed into and so far it's all been perfect. Windows just fucks it up everytime.
• Connecting my android phone and getting it work mount as a USB folder requires me to restart my folder explorer (Dolphin) after connecting the phone, which sucks
• Windows feels "comfortable" despite the fact that it's janky af compared to my manjaro install
• I never realised how much I hate having to use the mouse to do stuff... keyboard is just faster most of the time

Hey LTT, I just want to quickly say that I appreciate the feedback you guys give to the Linux desktop.

However, giving feedback with videos isn't very helpful for developers, because the majority of developers don't have time to watch content, especially those that are very long like most LTT videos. I suggest giving feedback in issue trackers and such

For example, you have an issue on GNOME where doing a key combo triggers a bug. Instead of mentioning it in videos only, you open an issue in the GNOME issue tracker and explain how you reproduced it, what hardware you're running and what underlying technologies you are using

Because many GNOME devs have a job outside of GNOME and then develop their apps on their free time, so they have very little time to consume multimedia and thus be unaware of your feedback

Same with KDE devs, etc.

DEs and distros generally don't have telemetry and/or analytics unlike Windows and macOS, and those that do are very light and don't gather much

If you encounter a bug and you don't know where to open an issue, I suggest asking the community. I'm more experienced with GNOME so I know where to open issues in their project. Feel free to ask me if you have a GNOME issue

Just watched WAN show. It's going to be nuts once Walmart and everywhere has playstations in stock because why would anyone buy it for 200 more if everyone has them.

No, cable internet. Cable--as in not fiber optic, cable.
The surge was coming though the cable, and though my modem. Fried two routers, two modems, and my PC.

Took me awhile to figure out what was causing it :/

Good news is, I figured it out and while I could've fixed it myself with a single wire, I made the cable company fix it...and then asked to speak to the repair guy's supervisor about it. They ended up sending me money for all the damages

I have the Razer Atheris, it's great as I can use it with BT on many devices, but I can use the wireless dongle thing on the few systems without BT.

I remember years ago PLX had to have Wifi Versions of the Kiwi (pre version 3) OBD2 interfaces because Apple would not allow the needed connections through BT.

It probably won't actually blow up but I wouldn't risk it.
Lithium Ion batteries are not meant to be kept fully charged. In fact, it's bad for them and they should only be at 100% for the shortest possible amount of time. (So yeah, you know how most of us plug our phones in overnight? yeah that's bad)
I believe the way most chargers work is when the reach 100% they switch to trickle charging, which means much lower power charging. Keeps the battery fully charged. So what happens when you try to dump power into a fully charged battery? It turns into heat.

Yeah I learned that with my Moto Z that was perpetually charging via its moto mod, though only to 80%, that battery lasted almost 2 years before becoming unusable though so not as bad as Linus' experience which makes sense since that was at 100%

Yup. It's bad to fully charge them, it's bad to fully discharge them.

It's also better to charge them slowly.

also modern android esp pixel...they use the alarm you have set and charge at exactly the speed required to reach 100% when your alarm goes off

You don't have to worry too much about lipo safety unless you have a bunch of them, or if you have hobby grade stuff (RC cars, drones, etc)

If you have batteries for RC stuff etc, you must take precautions.

Bruh my Pixel 2 XL was such a POS one time I plugged it into my battery bank, left it overnight, and by morning both it and my battery bank were dead and extremely hot 😂

I know why, it's bc it tried to charge the battery bank then the battery bank tried to charge it it was just a mess

That phone in general was a POS it caused me so much eyestrain

I know this was a few days ago but Linus and Luke had a pretty bad take on notch aesthetics on the new macbook. I did a little mockup to explain visually why it's better to have the notch. The only customization needed for this is changing your desktop background. There are small utility apps that do this for you and macOS Shortcuts.

the menubar blackout options works very well, and only becaues of 2 things that are unique to this situation:

1. the notch is actually just as tall as the menu bar normally is, perhaps only slightly different (this was likely a very deliberate design choice by apple). This does NOT happen with for example, iphone, pixel etc (where the notch is FAR taller than the top bar so the "menubar blackout" wouldn't work)

2. MacOS UI has an ever present menu bar up top...this is alos true for mobile OS' like android but not so for say windows.

All this, and there's a third prerequisite too mostly specific to these machines. You need a display that can do actual black. You need a good miniLED or oled screen. Otherwise the menu bar will look gray against the black notch. The new macbook screens are perfect for this.

To me this is an elegant and very Apple solution and it's just aesthetically better than what we had before. I really think people upset by the notch don't understand how it works. I hope the visual aid helps.

I was surprised when I saw Linus and Luke talking about how they didn't like the notch because it would impact their content and it's ugly. It was prerelease so maybe they didn't get to play with it yet but their take just isn't how it works at all. Phones are totally different, there is no top menu bar at all on iPhone so notch and content do run together even if you are "winning" space compared to forehead bezel.

the affectionately named "bezelbook 4head" option is literally what the MBP would be without the notch, it's how the 16" 2019 MBP works, and it's just flat out worse

Text interface is great for automation. GUI on the other hand can be easier to use because you can actually see what's available there without reading the docs.

Command line apps can be more feature-rich and flexible, too, because it's trivial to add yet another option, but adding it to a graphical interface requires a lot more work. Just imagine a GUI for gcc with all of its options!

Or just sign out of youtube, but that's doubly more annoying.

Every time Linus says "when you look at EU prices, they convert 1:1 even though they shouldn't" and I tried telling him through superchats and merch messages now, that in Europe, prices are including VAT, in the US pre VAT. So i.e. in Germany (19% VAT) a 600 EUR advertised card is actually 504 EUR before taxes. And that 504 EUR converts to 580 USD. Both got ignored, but I'd really love someone telling him that that's the reason, not companies making americans/Canadians pay more

He has said over and over and over that he doesn't read superchats, especially early ones. If you're hoping to reach him you're barking up the wrong tree. Even merch messages are hit or miss. They are hosting the show AND curating those messages, so a lot of them fall through the cracks. I wouldn't worry about it.

Dislikes are already discontinued in the youtube api so only thing i find now is extensions showing archived dislikes and/or dislikes by extension-users which is kind of useless.

Return Youtube Dislikes is using combo of scraped api info from before the api was shutdown and predictions to make a rough estimate of the dislike count but there opening up such stuff as creators being able to share there dislike count and also people who press the dislike button on content using the extension also gets added

Hmm that's an interesting idea, if creators opt into it and install the extension they could scrape the dislikes from the site when they visit it.

Then the extension could show some like check mark like the Twitter verified one a time stamp for official numbers from creators that use it. 🤔

All in all though I expect this is a short term solution, I think long term it comes to who caves in first. Does the community stop complaining over time, which I'm sure they are betting on, or will YouTube finally cave and enable it again.

Not sure what was featured on LTT, but you can spin up a Windows computer on a cloud provider or if you want a simpler setup without needing to know how to setup vms kn a cloud you can use Desktop as service provider.

Azure works really good with it being a MS product, but if you are looking for the easiest quick setup prob a smaller company that targets individuals and smb like V2 or Shells would be easier.
