Hi all! I just saw the recent WAN Show, and I’ve been mulling around writing the organization an email for a while (since I bought your screwdriver and you can probably cross reference the timing on that haha) I’d like to introduce myself and explain how the WAN Show (and LMG) made me a better person. Over ten years ago Linus and Luke taught me (way back in their NCIX days) how to build a computer on YouTube. It ignited a passion in me about technology and just being curious about technology in general. I was just a random high school kid using my summer money to build a cool PC. It had a GTX760 and it was the best thing I’d ever had up until that point in my life. Since then I’ve become a history teacher at a vocational / career technical education school, where among other things, I teach students who want to enter the IT profession (and culinary, automotive, medical etc, I digress). I kept up with Linus and WAN throughout college, but I learned what I needed, and life moves on and you focus on other things. Over the last few years I’ve also used the skills Linus and Luke taught me to become an integral member of a restaurant LLC group, where when more prominent hacking brought Linus Media Group back into my radar.

I recently saw the clip about education (it was actually a clip titled “YouTube’s new changes are huge” ). As a veteran educator of 13 years, plus with a Masters in School Admin this May, I’m considering a PhD in education, in part based on research on how YouTube is done in schools. I think the LMG folks and the things I’m working on in the academic world can merge based on that clip.

If the LMG folks want to continue this conversation, let’s go, I’m right here haha.

I’m on windows because Adobe isn’t on Linux, plus I’ve known it all my life etc.

i can comment at least in the case of new zealand because i live here and am familiar with how a lot of the systems here work, but something like tom scott proposed after the online safety act was put into effect in the uk would work here without too many changes needing to be made to existing systems

there's already a system of digital identity verification, and you could use that in a way similar to how oauth services work to "log in with realme", except instead of providing the actual website with all of the information on your id, they would only need to get a boolean value of whether or not you are of the appropriate age to view that content

and sure, this could be abused to log on the government side which services are being accessed and when, but i kind of think that's a moot point since that information is being collected by third parties anyway then leaked on the internet

Problem is you won't get that in the US, cause for reasons I can't grasp they are terrified of national id, and half the stats will do things differently than the other half the states just because they need to be themselves.. so they won't talk to eachother.. you'd end up with 40 different systems for 48 states (and 2 that just refuse outright) :p

Also given recent events, like DOGE doing their things, there are justified fears of what Data the Gov't collects and who has access and can use it.. see them using it to try and find immigrants, or state voter records..

There's some other reasons, but the bulk of it is that gun nuts are concerned that such a registry could be used somehow to take away their guns. The guns they supposedly have on hand to rebel against a tyrannous government infringing upon people's rights.

(This is why Real ID, which was initially conceptualized fairly soon after 9/11, only actually became needed for domestic air travel a few months ago)

This is why Apple’s passport-based Digital ID is cool. They’re the issuing authority rather than your local government, it works at just about every airport in the states for domestic travel and is completely transparent about what it shares when you present it. It can also be used by apps for age verification, sharing only an “older than x” flag and no PII.

They claim not to store anything after verification, too. You scan + tap your passport and take a couple selfies, they confirm everything checks out (notably without government involvement), then issue the ID and delete the data you shared. The ID is then stored locally, in your phone’s wallet and can be used until expiration with zero additional info or usage data being shared with Apple. When you present it, it displays a list of all the data it’s going to share prior to confirmation.

Google has an equivalent as well, also limited to the US for now afaik. Hopefully both will reach the broader world at some point…

To my understanding, you shouldn't be getting any message requests whatsoever, nor messages, unless it's a contact. If someone tries messaging you they should be getting an error saying that the person has no DMs enabled.

That makes little sense, since message requests still pop up as pings (unless notifications are disabled either completely or custom-set). It would make a lot more sense that DM's to non-friends are just disabled by default but you can still send friend requests.

I highly doubt that I have ever received a DM that wasn't a message request first, and came from someone not already on my contact list.

Frankly, I don't like it at all. I've never needed to use an ID for internet accounts, and there's no way in hell that I want my personal face scanned - I like my internet anonymity.

...What's worse, I've made friends on Discord. I have chatted with various indie creators, artists, and even YouTube personalities. I am in multiple servers that I value very much as a part of my identity as a person. It's also where I seek the most support, by connecting to people in real time and asking questions, getting help. If I get my account blocked, I lose a big part of that. This is no small thing for me - THIS IS HUGE. Discord has become a part of my life, and it will be difficult to migrate away from that.

I agree with the first half but I don't think this is about erasing groups of people. I think they just want to legitimize the platform as a step to go public or sell to investors and some nations possibly in the EU have strict requirements about user verification

Probably not the EU, as I earlier mentioned, there's a big fight for online anonymity in the EU. The only verification you need here is for services you would already have provided your personal details when established, such as utilities, educational platforms, work-related stuff, government stuff or banking. Where they knew your personal information before you created an online account. But anything that works with just an email has all personal information as optional (even e-shops technically only need an email or in some cases a phone number). And online stores almost always require to have the guest user option, or need to remove personal information after a short time as per GDPR. So I doubt they would push for age verification using IDs on a platform that is not 100% European and therefore could end up storing personal data.

A friend of mine has actually gone into details on a verification process that would use government ID online verification platforms that would communicate with any app service and would just send a "YES/NO" response without revealing any information, but that would require the app to cooperate with the specific government on the verification method. Not impossible, but also not likely to happen.

I honestly don't know what Discord's real intentions are. It just seems weird that they're implementing this so loosely. I mean, they could have it where ONLY government IDs are valid, but the fact that they're using some AI software to scan faces of people WITHOUT any ID verification, and then approving them anyway when it passes, not only seems questionable on its effectiveness, but also just plain doesn't make sense.

Is it truly to target certain groups? I can't say for sure because I haven't verified it yet, but I will say this - not only are people upset over this, but it seems that not everyone is subject to the new system; i.e. if they know you're an adult, then no verification is required. (Link below explains this.)

So @spice cairn and @restive rain, you both have solid points. As for me, I'm not gonna lean either way until I can personally find out more on this topic.

I like to think they're using the ai facial rec. Because they don't want to drive away everyone by requiring photo ID, but they didn't realize that we wouldn't like that either.

It's an unofficial fan version, that was taken down by Nintendo, but it's still a good one. You shouldn't need government ID for moderation, it's just that this server has very minimal moderation that's not related to scammers or bots. So I completely feel you, although I honestly don't mind seeing the blocked messages all over chat. On occasion I unblock something when there's a conversation and the blocked messages seem to be appropriate (I have multiple users blocked for just general tediousness), so knowing there's a blocked message is actually useful. i have an older laptop from like 2013 and i have linux mint installed on it. unfortunately, because of its age, the laptop has like an 920m or something for the gpu, one of those super old ones that barely does anything. but i discovered if i install a kernel newer than something like 5, it completely kills the audio on the laptop because the kernel people randomly decided to remove support for older nvidia GPUs after a certain date. so I have to mod the updater to not update the kernel automatically.

I just split passwords and 2FA between bitwarden (SH) & KeePass, respectively. Can be slightly annoying at times but I wouldn't remember more than a few PW anyway so I much rather do this. Plus, this way if I'm hacked they'd only have one of the 2 factors either way, so I'd probably have enough time to change PWs of everything I deem important enough to have 2FA for
