anyone want to help test my free alternative to teamviewer? It was mentioned on the last wan show about the price changes and free services going away - and now I too have been hit with it... I liked teamviewer because it just worked... but now I went back to vncviewer because its totally free.. but does not always work on some network stacks - so I built my own TV replacement and am giving it away for free - I am also embedding self-host server vs using my quantum compute resistant ZippyCoin mesh nodes as a fast decentralized p2p routing service of sorts to serve as a secure directory if you so opt in (and no - no one can see your IP address unless you want them to). Anyhow - I need testers - I am sure I need to work on it more but darn it if I did not get a clean stream from laptop to my desktop and my cell phone to my desktop as well. Seems to work ok for my needs - but I am self hosting 100% and not willing to share with others my own network - so need people to try it out on their own. I will open the code so you can look at it and see it is legit and no hidden code in there. Help me hack on it and break it so we can make it better is the goal.

I'd offer to test it but I've been pretty happy with SH RustDesk the last few years. But good luck, the more alternatives, the better.

So ah a health management platform in NZ has been attacked and some data has ended up on the dark web.
.... this does affect me because Manage my health is what my doctor uses to get appointments and send details like my meds and blood results. I'm appalled by what they found about the platform.

I'll just wait for a public release. And thank you for taking a stab at this. As it stands, we have 3 years (our discount was actually pretty decent, hence going with 3 years total) to find a replacement with the same (or better) features. And for context, while 3 years sounds like a long time, for the extremely small IT team at our publicly funded organization... ahem let's just say things move slowly. 🤣

I can see the use case, where you have your hands full when you're putting away groceries, or when you're doing holiday/event cooking and just go back and forth putting things away/getting things out. It can make your efforts a little streamlined when the door is opening/closing without physical effort. It's definitely not a general everyday thing tho and I personally wouldn't want it (more things to break down and additional costs), but I can see the benefit.

And as you've pointed out, some people just can't open the fridge door on their own easily

I have no issue with the way they talk about using AI.. having a writer use some to give a concept artist a direction, or having a concept artist iterate on the fly with some ai generated changes/additions to work before finalizing anything.. thats kinda was the whole idea of AI.. Being autistic sucks sometimes, some of them love pulling my hair!

tiny mauve

Getting my hair cut is a chore I'd rather just not do at all if possible, but since I've grown accustomed to my curls, I can no longer just get clippers and do it myself.

#

Really I just want them not to talk to me so damn much.

#

Sure, talk to the other barbers or the other guys who, for whatever reason, go there multiple times a month, but I only see you, dear stranger touching my hair, every 2~3 months, and we'll never get to know each other, so just do the job and move on. Barely remember my last saloon cut, but it was sometime during COVID....I (used to) stop by a salon every 2-3 years to have them cut about 5cm from the end for even growth, but my last significant cut was back in 2013 (note: very thin slightly wavy hair, requires very little care, as under normal circumstances I can go for a week between washing....with baby, that's sometimes 2 weeks jebaited ). Brushing takes 2 minutes at most, I just pin it up, so very little bother. Honestly, at this point I could just learn to cut it for myself, it reaches my thighs anyway, so not too difficult to cut back a little every once in a while for healthy hair tips shroog

Oh yes, B and V are essentially the same sound in many languages, and often the writing of these sounds are also slightly confusing/interchangeable.

(Fun fact, Russian В, в is the letter for "ve" and in Japanese the non-resonant pair of "b" isn't really "p" *, but "h", which often gets a "v" sound when pronounced)

*Yes "p" is still on the same character tree as h and b, but it is considered a special sound as opposed to the traditional resonant/non-resonant coupling of k-g or t-d etc.

Nvidia is just making a lot less GB203 silicon because demand shrunk substantially when Nvidia stopped supplying DRAM and so they don't have excess inventory that they cut down artificially to supply 5070 Ti and rely on just the pieces that have to be cut down because they cannot be a 5080 but aren't so defective that they can still be a 5070 Ti.

#

Similarly, 5060 Ti 8GB and 16GB use the same exact version of the GB206 so since AIBs have to provide their own RAM, they're opting to not take the 32Gb memory ICs that would be used for 5080 and 5090 (meaning they can make less GPUs in total) and instead are only making 16Gb memory IC 5060 Tis. Since the 5060 Ti uses 4 memory ICs and it takes 8 1Gb to make 1GB, that is how four 16Gb = 8GB and four 32Gb = 16GB.

Oh, not just Estonia, but they definitely were the pioneers in that. Denmark had an aggressive digitalisation about 6-7 years ago, and now virtually everything is done online (with some functions available offline as well for those who are slow to catch up). There's also no physical letter delivery done by the postal services anymore as of January 2026, so any non-tracked paper mail is delivered by small newspaper delivery organisations, and special tracked/insured etc mail is delivered as a package.

I feel like this works well enough, but it can be a pain in the bum as well in situations where A) you lose access to your mobile phone B) you're using Firefox as your main mobile browser (the forwarding cookies between the browser and the ID app can have annoying hiccups) C) you lose your main password/forgot your government username/ you're setting these up for the first time and are not in possession of a Danish passport D) your phone is just rolling onto the older side and the 1000 million apps you need for your day-to-day life (public transport, bank, government ID, healthcare, education, utilities....etc) force you to buy a new phone....so yeah. There are downsides to digitalisation.

random trout
# timid ruin Oh, not just Estonia, but they definitely were the pioneers in that. Denmark had...

Oh for sure. Migrating between devices is one of the most annoying things we've yet to figure out an efficiency for, especially even more so if your old device is non-functional. That, and too many orgs / companies / agencies decide that their way is the "correct" or just how they prefer to handle authentication... which often results in needing to have hundreds of extra apps on your device. Plus, there's the battery issue.

timid ruin
#

I think last year the EU rolled out the electronic ID requirement for all govt. functions (essentially a state handled MFA), so I also need an up-to-date phone for a lot of the Hungarian paperwork, but Hungary still has everything available via the "good ol' way" by walking into an office (or, rather, book an appointment several days/weeks/months in advance depends on the area you live in and the actual reason for your visit)

timid ruin
# random trout Oh for sure. Migrating between devices is one of the most annoying things we've ...

Oh, here the apps are totally the most encouraged way lol, as they can just be tied to your govt. identification app. More commercial apps tie to your phone number and often have the right to read your personal information for what's essentially advertising (not built-in third-party ads, just things like grocery stores' recommendations based on your shopping habits or special offers etc). I'm genuinely surprised how I'm not getting a LOT more spam calls with my phone number being associated with so many apps and accounts online.

random trout
#

With how SIM Swap attacks work, phone numbers should never be used as identity verification, but yes... it's similar over here for quite a few things. Apps & services assume your number will always be yours, and "why would it ever change?" until ... it does change, after which it can be difficult to login to services that only do SMS 2FA.

timid ruin
#

When we signed up for baby swimming (!), we had an app. I think so far that was the oddest one. But also, the US has just started rolling out the ESTA app, with plans to migrate there permanently from the current website.

timid ruin
# random trout With how SIM Swap attacks work, phone numbers should never be used as identity v...

Yupp. Although the 2FA is usually phone+email here, so in theory you'll always have a way to update one of them, but it's very much a pain in the butt. Now, my Hungarian number has been the same since I first got a mobile phone from my parents at 14 (so like, in 2001 I think?), but I had a bunch of local numbers in countries I lived in, so it is never guaranteed. I actually think that's why the EU enforces the central govt. authorisation app to be used for govt. websites and functions, since that gets rid off SMS/email tokens and provide better security. But also, forces people to upgrade devices more regularly in an environment, where the same EU has been pushing device longevity.

#

Also, fun fact, as you're having "engineer" as essentially specific "titles" , Denmark limits the use of both professors and Dr (the local equivalent of PhD essentially). You can't just use your title as "Doctor" , even if you do have a certified PhD , you need to do a special training/degree for this.

In Hungary, you can only be called a Dr with a capital D if you're a medical doctor or have a legal doctorate, otherwise you get the title "dr" (if you want to use it at all).

crude sandal
#

Pretty sure every functional country stops you from calling yourself a doctor if you're not a doctor

timid ruin
#

Everyone with a PhD have already passed a certain bar. In Denmark the bar just has additional steps, so you're essentially PhD++ lul

wanton token
#

also that *enginnering title means you bear the weight of all the decisions you make, which means you are held accountable if whatever you signed off on end up having issues

#

so while you can say that it is bureaucratic, it is in general for public safety

timid ruin
#

Oh, I agree with the engineer thing. I believe this is pretty normal here in Europe as well.

wanton token
#

also that, according to PEO (Ontario Enginnering governing body) you can hold a limited licence (as in that you can sign off work of stuff related to your field) and i quote

"Those without a bachelor's degree in engineering are encouraged to explore PEO’s Limited Licence option. A limited licence allows individuals to engage in professional engineering activities within defined fields. This path is suitable for those with at least eight years of experience, of which six years must be directly related to the scope of services within professional engineering practice."

timid ruin
#

The PhD thing is funny, as PhD literally stands for Doctor of Philosophy, but you need to be a "Certified Doctor of Philosophy". This has little to do with actual Medical titles, it's purely academic.

#

Which is why Hungary has capital D and lower case d for the distinction of medical/juridical doctorate titles and every other one (which does make sense)

#

Tbh I actually don't think we even use the term "software engineer" as a degree title. It would be an umbrella term of "IT engineer" that you can obtain from the same university where traditional engineers study, and it's definitely a university degree and cannot be earned by seniority from your work.

#

If you're working in the field without a degree, you'll always be a technician

timid ruin
# wanton token so while you can say that it is bureaucratic, it is in general for public safety

One thing on this tho. The title engineer should always only matter for companies and government settings.
As a layperson, you'll not need an electric engineer, you need an electrician. You won't need a mechanical engineer, you'll need a mechanic. You won't need a software engineer, you'll need a web designer or a developer or just a friendly IT guy . You won't need a civil engineer, you'll need an architect. And nobody needs a social engineer.

And companies will hire you based on degree/school and professional portfolio, so whether the title is protected or not, you'll be vetted (hopefully). If your professional experience is equal to someone with a degree, you still have a good chance to be hired. If your signature is required for legal purposes, the company might pay for a degree for you, if you're otherwise promising. In this case, the title itself really shouldn't matter, but I see your point, it's just not how things are often evaluated IRL in my experience.

my encounter with digitization was i got my now job, company is based in Dubai, so they had to get me residency there (basically a work VISA), the whole process was digital, only time i had to do something in person was actually recieve my residency ID card, but i could've just had that mailed to me, but it was shorter/easier to just go to the office to pick it up

timid ruin
#

Yeah, most of the process when we moved to Denmark was very similar. My partner had a few inconvenient processes in the US, but it's because those aren't directly handled by the Danish government, instead they use a local proxy that's apparently a real piece of work of a company. But for me it was suuuuper easy. I did have to show up once at the immigration office, as everyone has to have a simple face-to-face processing at the first time (once you have a yellow card, you can access everything online), and I had to show up when the mobile app for ID did not process my passport, since the photo in there has a different distance requirement than the Danish ID photos (they take a photo very closely, so my selfie and passport photos looked very different due to the scaling difference). So they had to activate my authenticator personally, which took about 5 minutes.

Oh, I think I'm following. They can't fulfill the promise to their older customers because of hardware limitations. That's the bigger issue?

odd grail
#

They've been selling cars with the "full self driving" package for years, through several hardware revisions. Hardware 3 was supposed to be the one that could do it (and older computers were upgraded at no charge), but it's becoming increasingly clear that it can't. There are 2 separate branches of FSD, and the one that runs on HW3 is quite far behind. The HW4 suite also involves more than just the computer, and there's no clear path to upgrading HW3 vehicles.

#

It's also still a monitored system, and requires an attentive driver ready to take over at all times. Calling it "full self driving" is kind of a stretch until that seat can be empty.

Said it before, say it again, rather than to order, they should Sell their initial batch, and from then on let people indicate their interest in buying an item (Product, Size, Quantity).. when theres enough interest, run another batch.. sure not everyone will buy, but hopefully enough will and the rest will sell to general public starting the cycle again.. probably will take some trial and error to find a good balance of how many people express interest --> how many direct sales that leads too.. but should atleast keep products being produced as needed for as many needed..

ITV Schools was first broadcast on ITV, then moved to Channel 4 in the early 1990s. I remember fondly, when the teacher would turn on the TV in the library, we'd all find a seat (or sit on the floor), and then wait for the show to start! We all enjoyed singing along and counting down the timer. 😛 Here's an example of some continuity and presentation.

Thankful that I can just go on YouTube and find this stuff. Having a visual, instead of a teacher reading from notes, was so refreshing, and I think modern, educational videos can still be utilised in the classroom, along with hands on, practical activities. 🙂 ❤️ Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O_V62QMGgI

Why do we get this extra piece of music with 'Schools Programmes follow shortly' when they could have had more of the 'The Journey' instead of the 1 min edit version? Preceded by the Channel Four Daily end credits, and a promo.

Sorry if this is a bit shaky but it was right at the end of a tape and it seems to go like that every time!

I am still suprised that north americans don't know german appliance maker Miele. They still make pretty reliable home appliances for a high, but still reasonable price (washers start at around 800€) They are decently repairable too.

#

They design and test their washing machines for 5000 washing cycles. Which means at 5 washes per week, about 20 years of operation. Even if they only hold up 15 or 10 years it is better then a lot of other brands.

#

We still have our grandmas Miele washer from 1996 as a seperate machine for dog beds, blankets and extremely dirty/greasy work wear

#

They dont give a warranty for that long, but I have yet to hear from anyone around me that their Miele appliance failed on them early.

# limber jewel I am still suprised that north americans don't know german appliance maker Miele...

Unfortunately, a big part of brand recognition involves being able to readily purchase a brand in a given jurisdiction... these days, it's much easier, but 20-30 years ago (before eCommerce) it was not. I only know of Miele because I have an unquenchable thirst to seek out the best value products whenever I'm making an important or expensive purchase, but lots of people don't have that kind of time or blindly trust marketing a bit too much. 🙁

There's also Liebherr. My bestie had her old (maybe Samsung) fridge-freezer die on her after about 8 years. She called a repair guy and he said that most modern fridges cannot really be repaired, as there are no spare parts available, everything is too integrated.... except for Liebherr. So she should buy a Liebherr one if possible as that's repairable beyond the warranty by any decent household appliance handyman.

She's had her Liebherr one for almost the same amount of time and it's really good. It's also fairly priced (true, some fancier models can be expensive), but it's also a German brand that's built to last. We also ended up investing in Einhell machines for drills and other household DIY electronics and it's also a very good price-quality German brand.

My partner is American and he was like "I don't know these brands", but these were highly recommended by the staff as a better value alternative to say, Makita.

Unless employees are willing to pay the price of Jet-A (I highly doubt it), then that's almost certainly not occurring

#

for context, Jet-A is the fuel that the aircraft runs on, and currently the average price in NA is ~$2.16/gal

#

according to the IATA

tacit drift
#

either way I think it's a great investment. at some point the crew must've realized that the money and time costs of flying on airlines and booking hotels was becoming more expensive than just having a learjet fly them there and back on the same day

frozen agate
#

given each hour the aircraft can burn approximately 335 gal/hr

#

it's definitely not going to be the cheapest to run.

#

certainly nobody south of C-Suite has the money to drop on paying for jet-fuel to use the company jet for a family trip to "remote location"

tacit drift
#

I can definitely see them using it to fly other influencers or guests out to the vancouver offices. the price of running the jet is likely offset by the number of opportunities they can now capitalize on

#

when you get a plane the whole world kind of just shrinks for you by orders of magnitude. if you were up for it you could probably fly to and from europe in less time than it would take to drive a couple of states over

frozen agate
#

oh for sure, however, definitely not for personal transportation for stuff like holidays unless it's Linus, or maybe Luke

#

Unless that aircraft has some unknown/unspecified range extensions or efficiency gains, it's not going to be taking them to Taiwan or China unless they stop somewhere in the far west of Alaska to refuel. The Falcon 900B can only do ~4000 nautical miles (~7400 km) on the capacity it is listed as having.

for reference, that's anywhere above the line in this screenshot:

#

if they made a stop in the east coast of Canada/US they could cross the atlantic for a rest stop in the UK before proceeding onwards to the middle east etc, if necessary.

#

but based on the known stats, unless they are willing to do fuel stops (no reason why they couldn't really) then they're probably only using it for continental trips around the US and Canada

cursive tiger
frozen agate
#

lol

#

the jet has a service ceiling of FL500, I don't think that is going to be a huge issue for it

frozen agate
#

🇮🇸

cursive tiger
#

i imagine using reykjavik aeroport for your private jet is probably too expensive given everything else about that place though

frozen agate
#

Keflavik is not super expensive actually in the grand scheme.

From May this year the charge for landing in that aircraft would be approximately €269.94
Take off would depend on passengers but presuming a full capacity and a modest seating layout I'd hazard 10 passengers giving us a T/O fee of €66.90 in summer or €33.50 in winter

There may be TNC charges but I am unsure if they apply, nor how to calculate them at this time

Additionally fuel in Keflavik right now for Jet A is $2.036/gal which to fill the Falcon would cost $5822.96 to brim the tanks from empty.

All in (using current conversion rates from USD to EUR @ 1:0.84):

  • Fuel: €4875.56
  • Landing Charge: €269.94
  • Take Off Charge: €66.90
  • Total (presuming no other charges): €5212.4 which is US$6225.25 and CA$8440.52
#

As is always the case with these things, the budget killer is always fuel. Jet A is not cheap.

All things considered, that is actually a really reasonable pit stop price

tiny mauve
#

But can it be done under 3s? If not, too slow, the price doesn't matter and it's a terrible pitstop.

#

I am now wondering how long it takes to refuel a plane. Bunkering a large vessel will easily take over 12h, but the fuel tanks are easily over 5000 m³, and I have no idea how it compares to commercial planes

frozen agate
#

for Boeing 737 i believe it takes around 15 minutes from empty to full

#

for something like tha falcon you'd be looking at a much smaller pump truck with much slower fill speeds for safety, so that would come in probably around the 5-10 minute mark

#

all in your total turnaround time would probably be somewhere around 20-40 from landing to takeoff again depending on weather, priority, and how busy the airport is

tiny mauve
#

Not too bad. Faster than Bottas' Monaco pit stop still. And could easily make up the time lost if it were a 24h race.

frozen agate
#

lol

timid ruin
# frozen agate Keflavik is not super expensive actually in the grand scheme. From May this yea...

And also take into account that any passenger airplane can only fly over a very few specified routes, as most of the airspace is reserved for military use. So logical route stops might not be as straightforward, and often burn more fuel as well, due to the path they need to follow. And then you also have adverse weather effects or just wind directionality in general. So I'd add some overhead to that fuel calculation

Funny... and yet his most popular video was a recent one 7 days ago about leaving LTT

maiden shadow
#

In said video he said he left a number of months ago and it took him time to decide to make the video

#

He left in the summer, around the same time as Alex.. it was no secret..

#

He did the video cause of the drama around him asking for clips of his channel to be removed from a recent LTT video about how LTT Spends money, which had a part of the video about past employees, and included his channel, ZTT, etc

tender prism
#

Why is he asking for clips of his channel to be removed form a recent LLT video?

#

Would've made for good publicity and outreach for his growing channel

woeful crescent
#

Because apparently despite being clearly in a section about PAST employees, people saw him and thought he was back.. or at least that was the reason given..

tender prism
#

Thanks for explaining thought. Now it all makes more sense

It does seem, and he says basically as much in his video, the leaving is a sensitive spot for him, so there could have been other reasons..

#

Cynical me says asking to be removed makes it an even bigger topic to get even more eyes..

#

But I've been on the internet and long time so I'm always cynical :p

End of the day I still check out his videos.. his stuff is basically Short Circuit 2.0, nothing new.. unlike Alex and Andy.. who also benefit from having a duo dynamic..

When I say tangential drama, I don't mean attacking LTT directly because I'm sure Jake isn't about that direct confrontation. I mean poking at the topic of employee leaving LTT and farming the speculation and drama from that

Ya Jake is someone who has been around enough I could see him making stuff sound like drama just to get the views.. he knows the algorithm.. then again he really could be sour about LTT.. or anything in the middle.. hes not out there slinging crap or anything, and nothing about what he said about why he left makes me enraged at LMG, so its all good to me..

#

He felt he was worth more than LMG was willing to pay him.. thats when you part ways.. thats not one side being wrong.. Thats just a fork in the road.

LTT is entertainment first and foremost.. Its like Top Gear/The Grand Tour.. even when the technical aspects are present, its the presentation that makes it the reason to watch.

I haven't seen an news article on it, so take it with a grain of salt..

You know I'm not going to compain about that. Let them work on the next generation and hopefully there will be a big uplift. Gives the ram shortage time to settle (hopefully). 5000 series was stupid and pointless in my opinion. I'm not saying there was no performance uplift, but the 5000 GPUs are to the 4000 series what the 14 series Intel CPUs are to the 13 series. It's literally just a refresh. I'm also not going to complain because I was to still with my EVGA card longer, I might upgrade next gen, but I'm not going to do this gen because I really don't actually need it and I would rather use this GPU for longer since we aren't getting more EVGA GPUs. The only reason I even have a 3090ti was as a final send off to EVGA.

#

Either way I'm not selling this GPU, I'm keeping it.

#

ngl short circuit pretty positive too. but the host said he was willing to try it for 30 days if thats worth anything

#

"technical depth to be able to make actual tech videos"

14/22 videos are sponsored or exclusive access

#

i dont see a single review on his channel actually lmao

woeful crescent
#

atm his channel is basicly Short Circuit with just him as the exclusive host.. and thats not a bad thing, I mean its proven to work.. But at least for me to keep my attention he'll need to expand.. the fact that he was trying to get a place is a sign that he hopefully has plans for more though..
