My old laptop turned 10 this year, and it's still great, but my partner convinced me to buy a new one back in May. I got myself the ASUS ROG Swift 2025 18" setup with the 5070 card and I felt like I wasted so much money right after I gave birth for a laptop I won't be able to game on until at least February when my daughter will finally go to nursery. I got a 1T SSD a little before that as well, as my older external HDD had some faulty factors. My partner did a full upgrade and created a family storage device running HexOS.

Fast forward a few months, and the whole GPU/memory market is exploding.

I no longer feel like it was a waste of money to get a new laptop when I did.

the problem really isn't the LLM's existence per se. the technology itself is super useful. the issue is how it is integrated into society, first as a magical thing (hence the overuse of the name "AI" ), and then as a fancy marketing tool. but it's like any piece of technology, with the correct execution it can be really good, but if it's overhyped and underdelivered, then it just leaves people bitter. and it isn't taught to people how to approach it as intended, just thrown to them, like a chainsaw thrown into a monkey cage. but hating the technology is as backward as when people feared cars, electricity, or even just women who can read.

I got an external SSD last February for about 700 DKK for 1 Tb. Last time I checked (right before Christmas) it was 1200 DKK for the exact same model and capacity. Maybe not doubled, but it's a very considerable increase within the same year. There's also a 2-3 weeks delivery window as opposed to the 2-3 days it was before.

That's about 100 USD to 170 USD increase or thereabouts

My partner's desktop has a 4 Tb SSD and several 500-1000 Gb WD external HDDs. So we don't have issues with data storage.

I should probably post it on the forum, but I visited one of the US's top drone manufacturers back in October.

We're looking to acquire a model from that manufacturer this year and we're going with them because it meets the requirements for use with gov't work (and they actually sell to a few US agencies)

and you need two per flight

and then to recharge them you need a $225 charger.

I know it isn't meant to be low level consumer tech, but holy crap even at business expense levels that's not even able to be considered chump change in a significant number of companies

You're not so much looking at the cost, but what the return is on the equipment. If a $50,000 drone setup lets you bid and win contracts for $XXX,XXX worth of work, does that cost seem unreasonable?

Likewise, other drone surveying solutions aren't too cheap
