I haven't worn anything on my hands (save a string bracelet throughout my pregnancy and the occasional gloves in winter/for biking) in a decade. As a former sportsperson, I never wear anything that's tight fitting and cannot easily be taken off in a jiffy. A watch is fine, as the silicone/leather strip can be cut in case of emergency, but having a tight fitting ring that actually accumulates heat is...well. not sure how they thought it was a good idea...even without the battery swelling, fingers can just swell in a moment's notice, especially if someone has circulation issues.

A company has to enforce a contract or else other cases may not hold up. Elijah isn't competing at all, he just streams.
This is why they were given the nice way of ending the contract and getting paid for it instead of quitting to end it

I used Xperia flagships since their first smartphone came out until around 2023, when my last Xperia fell and the screen repair would have cost me more than the phone itself. At that point Xperia flagships became overpriced and didn't even adapt OLED screens, like other flagships did back then, and for the same cost I could just buy an ASUS ROG. It uses the same top-of-the-line camera as any Sony, has a superior screen, better battery life and waaaaay better CS. There's an added plus regarding the compatibility with my ASUS PC.
Otherwise just go Samsung for less. Xperia isn't really worth the buck nowadays.

I posted this as a comment on the last WAN show video, but I kinda wanted to open it up to discussion, to see what other people thought.

I think the only way to reconcile what Linus has said previously about home ownership as an investment (not owning multiple houses as speculation on the market, and not owning multiple houses as investment property as a landlord), with this new plan for home ownership for the LTT and LMG, is if they actually bought property instead of a house...

The problem with housing at the moment isn't necessarily (just) that people are speculating on housing, or hoarding it, but also a supply issue... There is waaay more demand than there is supply, which is why the prices keep going up.

Instead of buying a house, and taking it off the market for a number of years, with nobody living in it... LMG instead could buy property, with no house on it currently... It would be a massive pain to get all the permitting and junk done... but I think it would be much more in line with what Linus believes about ethical house ownership. At the end of however long it took to build this house, and install the tech, you can then sell it at market value to just about any family, and I don't think anybody would think that Linus was going back on his word about housing investments.

The issue there was something that Linus himself commented on during that very same WAN show regarding managing construction projects being a massive headache.

It is something which would seemingly (from my understanding and interpretation of Linus' comments), outweigh the benefits of just buying the house and doing it that way. It would also cost WAY more than just buying a house, since not only do you have to pay for the builders, contractors, permitting, materials, and the actual tech in the house, you also have to take into account the cost to LMG for the time that is consumed from their staff budget managing the construction process. The cost would likely massively outweigh anything that they could recoup from selling the property and monetising the videos.

Don't get me wrong, I am very sure that LMG could pull it off in a profitable manner. However the chances of them actually managing that are so slim that it is not a horse I'd be willing to bet on.

It's true... permitting and construction would take a while, where there might not be an appropriate video for it... It might be interesting though, to see just what it looks like to build a tech house from the ground up, rather than modify an existing house to have technology in it.

Also, I don't know that they'd need to just buy something with nothing there yet... they could buy something that is basically condemned, that nobody can currently live in... That way, they already have things like power/water/sewage/internet set up...

I don't know that it would make it any more cost effective, but the idea is to be adding to the supply, instead of deleting from it...

I was just watching wan show, a bit late as usual. And got to the part where they discuss linux again.
When they do their one month on linux things. Why is noone talking about filesystems?
One of my biggest rages against linux is the file system, and the idea about "splitting up" programs in tons of micro pieces... Like binaries in one place, config files in another place, and so on.
I want all my files related to a program IN ONE PLACE.
Also, the lack of an equivalent to dll's. The fact that its near impossible to have two versions of the same library installed. (Because not all programs gets updated when the library do) is insane.
Docker just feels like a bandaid on top. A convoluted solution to try to solve it.... oh well....

Spekaing of windows making things shittier.... Not to mention the fact that GTK has decided to remove the address field from the file browser..... OH GOD....

MPV + UOSC is the actually superior media player. As lightweight as the others, equally FOSS, but by far the most modular and customisable. I've not opened VLC or MPC in years since going with MPV. It's also the superior YouTube video player, as you can set the max amount of bytes to cache (in RAM), so you can just open a bunch of videos, go cook your lunch/dinner, and don't have to wait a single second as the new tab opens or deal with any ads, all while using less RAM than a single YouTube webpage. Or a Google search... It's beautiful.

Yeah, I can see that being a problem. The GUI for configuration is non-existant, and UOSC doesn't improve that. Also, the default UI was so ugly it was painful to look at. But, weirdly, the ability to change just about anything from the internal console feels more intuitive to me, instead of having to parse through menus

If you're on windows I recommend you install it through scoop (the mpv-git package for more up-to-date versions or the mpv package for the regular release, both are in the extras bucket), as the package on chocolatey takes a while to get updated.

Personally I'm a MPC-HC ( https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/ ) with either the MPC Video Renderer, or on my main and theater systems, madVR which is very customizable.. in my case I have upscalling rules for various resolutions, and based on directory, for traditional vs animated content.. But thats not gonna be for everyone.. inface if I needed to change my rules it would probably take me a day or so as I've just copied them from install to install for years lol

On my drive home I abruptly had absolutely no acceleration, the gear indicator on the dash started flashing, the power mode indicator disappeared, an alert said shift into park and press the brake + start button, and the check engine light and red wrench lights came on. I was still able to steer and brake with power steering and brakes for maybe 30 seconds before those went out too. After putting it into park and pressing the brake and start button it started back up and I could drive it normally for a little bit, but it happened two more times on my 1.5 mi drive home.

I understand the vehicle Linus is driving is supposed to be the cheapest entry point for comma (which happens to have the least amount of torque available), and I don't think he's tried any forks of openpilot yet like sunnypilot, but I just want to point out that there is more potential there is then is let on.

I think they said in the original video that the Corolla they used (and a lot of other cars) also have limited imposed by the car itself on how hard the software is able to turn and such.. so that could be part of the issue too, not that the software doesn't detect the move, just that its unable to do it cause of the car limitation..

Right, the limits are different across different makes and models. For example, I know my Hyundai Palisade can make a right turn since it's done it many times before, but the Toyota Corolla I'm not so sure about. From what I've heard in the community, Toyotas are one of the weaker torqued cars. The comma itself cant command any more than what is allowed by the cars MDPS/EPS firmware, it will just error out and drop all torque. Comma stays well below this threshold specifically because they don't want the steering wheel to give up mid way through a curve/turn. Something like a Hyundai Sonata / Elantra has a much higher torque limit that can be a lot more impressive with this kind of device.

TLDR: I think it was cool to show how something like the Comma 3X can make a car like the Toyota Corolla "Self Driving", but I feel like Linus is missing the greater experience that (I think) a majority of the comma community is working with. In the end, I fear his opinion will down play what the product is capable of if he only feels like "It just holds straight lines"

I just watched wan-show, late as usual, and just came to the segment about hp drivers...
I have access to a, by now, quite old industrial grade Color Laser Printer for printing product labels.

For reasons, I lost access to the old computer having the drivers, I searched FAR and wide for new drivers, and could not find any. Finally, I contacted the company who had long since purchased the mfg, and they said "Sorry, we do not support that printer anymore, but we can sell you a new one!". I was like.... This printer is no longer in active service, its used by staff once in a blue moon and we have toner and spare parts that can keep that printer running for 20 years+ more. We do not need a new one... They where like "Oh too bad"...

Later the same day, a local representative contacted me saying the mother company said there was an interest in a new printer... I explained the situation, and he was like... "Oh I see..." and the next day, a mail dropped on me with an ISO with the drivers for said printer.

There really is kind people in this world.

Side note: Is there any place I can toss the driver disk for archiving?

I upgraded my mom's old HP laptop to an SSD for her a couple years ago and the drivers and service manual were still available then. Fast forward a couple years and their website acts like it doesn't exist anymore. Nvidia still supports the GPU though which is a bit ironic.

Recently I've been thinking about force updating it to Windows 11 because it still runs fine, but that's a different story...

Eve Online is honestly by best showcase of how to deal with stuff like that.. its paid items are (generally) just vanity, you can sell and buy the game currency in game so its not just for people opening their wallet, and you can make insane amounts of ingame currency without making it a job.. if you do make it a job then it gets silly.. a very healthy system.. ironic, given Healthy and Eve Online generally aren't used together :p 😄

I wasn't there, but I was online and listening while it happened ( I mostly was on the PVE side of things, but lots of people you fly with are also on the PVP side, so I was getting realtime updates from both sides, along with listening to a lot of shittalking :D)

But ya, Eve as a game requires a very specific personality to survive, most people can't handle non-consensual pvp and losing what you fly.. and that brings out both victims, and the toxic people..
