Is that Sphere in Vegas?

#

That got me thinking about how we might end up with Sphere and Warner Bros. foisting AI slop into the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gpwcaNyIrY

This "Wizard of Oz" isn't in Kansas anymore. In fact, it's in Las Vegas, where Sphere is presenting the Judy Garland classic as you've never seen it – a 16K immersive experience on a screen larger than four football fields, with tornado effects, and artists and AI expanding the visions of Emerald City. Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz...

▶ Play video
#

It reminds me of the arguments against colorization of black-&-white movies in the 80s

#

Even compared to the AI filters & processing in older James Cameron movies (except for Terminator 2) and upscales of Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death, Jaws 3-D (in 2D 4K), and The Sugarland Express, this is more revisionist than those, and more likely to add slop than those or the human-assisted AI patches in the 4K restoration of Se7en.

#

The only good parts I'd accept from Sphere's Wizard of Oz edit belong in a 4DX showing of the 2013 3D conversion, to be honest.

#

The wind effects, debris and things

#

Most cinemas equipped with 4DX probably can't fit the pyrotechnics that Sphere has due to size restrictions, though.

#

and Ben Mankiewicz of TCM doesn't deserve to be hooked into all of this, to be honest.

#

Did he get paid to get roped into this nightmare? Most likely.
Does it go against TCM's original mission statements and goals and stuff? Yeah.

#

Also, the Sphere cut with AI slop runs shorter than the original theatrical cut, similar to the early IMAX DMR blowups of Apollo 13 of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, except Sphere doesn't have platters to worry about like IMAX did back in 2002.

woeful crescent
#

See o hate most times they mess with a movie, like the erra or DNR and sharpening.. but the Sphere version of Oz doesn’t bother me cause it’s already its own art piece.. just putting up normal film isn’t gonna look right, it’s never going to be accurate to the original, so I give them leeway there.. also there’s a studio that worked on it that says Google vastly overstated how much was ai vs the studio fx house.. but either way to me it’s a more unique situation than most of the AI slop I hate..

In a followup call, Securam director of sales Jeremy Brookes confirmed that Securam has no plan to fix the vulnerability in locks already in use on customers’ safes, but suggests safe owners who are concerned buy a new lock and replace the one on their safe. “We’re not going to be offering a firmware package that upgrades it,” Brookes says. “We’re going to offer them a new product.”

Hi, I am looking for a specific segment of WAN show where Linus goes through the 4 pillars of fair use... I cannot for the life of me find the clip, I know it was around 2-4 years ago but thats about it :/

4 min? Absolutely impossible. I've got curly hair, it's a 4~6 minute job just to condition it, and the weather just won't let me skip it. Shampooing and washing the body is only like 3. Now it's 7 at a minimum. Then I've got to waste like 7~21 minutes planning/dreading the rest of the day and/or the next day, and also try and figure out how I'll solve every problem with the world once I become the world's (benevolent, but with a firm hand) dictator.

All in all, I need at least 30 minutes.

If there's no other way, I'll just have to press "muckduck a complete stranger" button 7 times and get 2 extra minutes for crying in the shower because I just can't figure out why is it that one whatever-personal-or-uni project I'm working on at that moment is going to shit.

Never say never. CSF was a great channel it's a shame they've stopped doing it. It's weird seeing Dennis be gone now who basically was the Host of CSF. CSF was the original vlog place and the best place to see teambuilding. I wish they would instead of launching that CSF video they should do an ohmage back to the "Shock Collar Showdown -CSF's Triumphant Return" would love to see that make a return. It's been a two year Break since the last CSF video, and there are so many things that could've been a CSF video. The law mowing video could've totally been a CSF video.

plain aurora
#

True but with LTT being the type of company they are now, they really need to see a ROI on each channel to justify it's existence, yeah that lawn mowing one would have been one but it was also a sponsored one and the money the sponsorship would have justified a main channel showing.

But yeah never say never, you are so right with that one

While Intel says the government is making an “$8.9 billion investment in Intel common stock,” the administration does not appear to be committing new funds. Instead, it’s simply making good on what Intel described as “grants previously awarded, but not yet paid, to Intel.”

Specifically, the $8.9 billion is supposed to come from $5.7 billion awarded-but-not-paid to Intel under the Biden administration’s CHIPS Act, as well as $3.2 billion also awarded by the Biden administration through the Secure Enclave program.

trim obsidian
#

It's basically blackmail unless the investment is in lieu of any of the previous requirements. Though I do hope that the administration was smart enough to make sure Intel does not sell off foundry since they aren't investing because of the design side and foundry IS intel.

Even if it's your favourite website, you won't visit it daily, unless it's part of your work. Given the WAN title, just gonna leave this tweet here. There will still be sideloading but it'll more like iOS sideloading where a computer will likely be necessary to sign with a personal cert. Not even Apple requires submitting an ID for their (personal) sideloading so I doubt Google would. Apple just requires an Apple ID, not sure if they'll make it forced through a google account since that's a bit iffy tbh

I think what google will be doing with Android is it will be just like how ssl certificates work on servers. The public certificate will be signed with google's android device certificates. And android will only need to check for 2 things. That it is signed with one of google's android device certificates. And that it hasn't been revoked. This does mean that developer certificates will last 1 year at the most so that when revoking a developer certificate, google doesn't have to keep it on their servers forever, only until it is past its expiry date.

This is also how Apple does it's certificates for developers on iOS and Mac.

And before anyone says anything about having to submit their certificates private key to google, you only need to submit your public key.

the most likely cause imho is the recent algorithm changes that happened. They basically crushed discoverability for me, I have so many small creators on my feed that I do not even care to watch and it isn't because I changed my viewing habits that's for sure. Now I find it harder to find stuff to put on as background noise because I don't even get recommendations that are any good for me.

#

in the first 10 videos on my recommended feed:

  • 2 are things I would watch
  • 3 are political commentaries
  • 1 is a gaming video
  • 1 is about medical science
  • 1 is a historical documentary on the second small global disagreement of the 1930s and 1940s
  • 1 is a video abut "England's Most Underrate City", not sure why im supposed to care there.
  • 1 is a video about the shortest railway branch lines in the UK.

so in 10 chances, only 20% of the videos are something I'd ever even click on. the remaining videos are all entirely out of whack with my feed.

# elfin cloud i suspect that i too am missing videos at time from the subscription list. i bro...

I've been YouTube-free since '23 '22, so its possible something's changed since, but, while I was never unsubbed from any channels, for years prior my subscription page would often be missing a couple of videos from some channels, sometimes even videos from the few channels I had notifications turned on for (so it couldn't be a timing issue because I would hardly ever watch videos right after the notif. and I would only use the notification link if I couldn't find the video in my sub page)

proud valley
#

I'm still mid wan show vod watch, but I wanna throw in my two cents about youtube views.
Some time ago some youtuber mentioned how over 50% of their clicks werent coming from the subscriptions tab. And I very often save my videos to Watch Later, or when I'm just scrolling about, a fresh video drops in the recommended tab, before I could even check my subs, and that may count as a "discovered" video, not as a sub clicking a video they were gonna watch anyway

trim obsidian
#

That is true. I put almost everything over 1 hour into watch later and anything that I don't want to watch at 2x into a different private playlist to watch outside of the feed. Basically I refresh and sort it all out between the queue, watch later and playlist, then watch the queue and fill in the rest of the time with the other two locations. (currently almost 2 days worth of content in each location. I need to trim.

proud valley
#

Same here. Long form almost always goes to watch later. And I also have phases where I let the list build up to quite some many videos. I very rarely run out. It's often about what I'm in the mood for.
I also make a mental difference between videos I actually want to pay attention to, or just put it on as background noise.
Like talking head videos, like GN's news videos, or TechLinked, all get listened to quite close to release.
Buuuut I admit, that LTT's biggest head scratcher, the recent desk video, I not only watched like a couple of days ago, so nearly a week later, buuut I did bundle it into the background noise list, so I barely paid any attention to it

#

Meanwhile there are some creators, whose videos I watch like two weeks later, because they require a nice calm alone time, and a bowl of snacks.
And honestly, I'm sad I havent been doing that with the new scrapyard wars season. I watched them as procrascination from other tasks, but I definetly didnt apreciate them enough

tiny mauve
#

Tbf though at this point I expect to actually watch only like max 5% of that, but saving the videos to WL helps me ignore them instead of wasting away watching the whole internet

timid ruin
#

Evidently, I don't YouTube correctly....I watch perhaps 2-3hrs worth of videos per week (!) plus WAN show (since that one is family time with my partner, otherwise I'd watch it on Spotify). I have a few channels that only drop videos on specific days, and there are some followed channels that are occasional drops, but I rarely miss content I really care about (since my partner watches most LMG videos, he pre-filters a lot of content for me, so I only need to queue up what I really want to watch....and with multi-episode contents like Secret Shopper or Scrapyard Wars, we'll just wait until all episodes drop and make them family time).
On my channel I'm yet to run into a members only video, but on my partner's YouTube Premium it's definitely a thing, especially from a hoofing channel we often watch together. Otherwise I haven't experienced any big changes, apart from some very occasional missing videos from my Following list which is my default YouTube home tab anyway on my Firefox startpage (I never know the precise name, but the small quick icon page when you open a new empty tab).

tiny nimbus
#

I see even DankPods Wade has been talking about ending YT channel memberships and going Floatplane-only, specifically because of the way all the members-only videos litter his channel page seen by channel members and non-members alike

Apart from the ads that sneak in when I use Firefox Focus on my phone (due to location they're non-English), I haven't noticed this at all, and I rarely watch non-English content. Sounds absolutely bizarre. Does this happen from any browser? All I've noticed is that sometimes it takes a few minutes for a video to start (and YT has a popup message something like "See here why it takes too long"), which I assume is an adblock thing. But it doesn't really bother me anyway.

What I find extra annoying tho, there's one bloatware (Cross-device services, that are meant for Chromebooks, which I don't and won't own), which acts independently - if I uninstall updates, it automatically reinstalls them every day just after midnight. If I disable it from the system app screen, it re-enables itself when I restart the phone. That was not an issue until my phone came back from repair in June and received a full firmware and OS update to the most recent.... llamaLikeThisI

timid ruin

Also, honestly, what can creators do, really? They can talk against it, but that isn't really gonna change anything, tbh.
The other thing is, several countries make it not just legal but pretty normal to run political ads around elections. Now, if you want to play content at school (it's pretty common for teachers to play educational content to their class), you most likely won't have Premium and likely also don't want to accidentally play political ads (this is an actual situation a friend of mine had, he was teaching history in a special needs school, and during election season there was 2-3 (!) ads during short videos - now political content can get you in trouble while teaching, so he literally had to use adblockers to avoid breaking the school rules). I know it's a niche example, but there are legitimate situations where ads (or at least certain ads) should absolutely be turned off.

Linus was talking about WhatsApp notifications on iOS needing contact photos, so this is kinda relevant https://mastodon.social/@mysk/115204746326765802

🤯 Instagram is testing new iOS push notifications that include a profile photo. Each time the notification is shown on your screen, it triggers a GET request to fetch that image, letting Meta track every on-screen impression.

The app still misuses push notifications to send detailed device analytics about the device (uptime, battery, volume, locale, timezone, memory, CPU, etc.)

Like Adobe and O365? Absolutely.

But yeah, "expense it" is not a thing for school teachers lol - it's not even an Eastern European specific issue. Unless you buy Premium from your own pocket (which in weaker currencies isn't feasible from a teacher's income), you won't have it. But yeah, my point is, adblock usage is in some cases essential and definitely excusable...and it's not even the creators' responsibility anyway. The whole "let's punish creators for viewers avoiding ads" is ridiculous.

This ^^
Ads are part of a lot of things. There's a difference between something being reasonable (such as customiseable ads based on interest or at least the option to opt out from certain types of sensitive topics; reasonably limited amount of ads corresponding to the content one is matching etc), and being just money-obsessed and grabbing. I mean, if you want to make your platform subscription-only, please do. But creating or recreating something that's utterly unenjoyable due to the lack of ad content- or quantity control is a joke. I do use free phone apps that have apps, and they work fine the way they are, but the fact that I can no longer use Facebook for what it's intended (aka seeing updates from friends I'm not in a daily contact with) without scrolling pages and pages of junk recommendations (not even ads per se) is really getting under my skin recently. And all platforms do this. My partner pays for YT Premium, and it's still shoving members-only content into his face. But again, I'm especially talking about situations where ads are not just a nuisance, but can be harmful, because money is above user experience.
And to put this on creators is especially spineless, not to mention, likely absolutely useless.

#

Anyway, I'm done ranting.

cursive tiger
timid ruin
# cursive tiger and yet it's still much better than tv or at least it used to be today mediawor...

TV here in Europe was pretty regulated. There was typically an ad break every 30 or so minutes during movies and shows, and no as breaks during news. An ad break consisted of about 3-5 minutes of ads and about 1-2 minutes of programme recommendations. It was easy to go for a bathroom break, pick up a snack or just do whatever during the break, and it made it easy to record movies to VHS back in the 80's-90's and early 2000's without ads. The national stations could stretch it further, they could air movies under 100 minutes without any ad breaks.

These practices haven't changed much, except that a lot of these channels are now streaming online, which makes a lot of the content available for everyone free of charge and often also ad-free. So yeah, I'd heavily argue whether YT is better than telly, but then again, I've heard that it's actually rubbish in the USA and Canada, so I'd imagine Australia and NZ is similar to the US model

tiny mauve
#

I've heard that it's actually rubbish in the USA and Canada

I usually watch IndyCar on pirate streams bc I prefer the English commentary. Rubbish is a compliment to US TV ads. The amount of ads in general, but even worse, amount of pharma ads, is a fucking joke. Not to mention that it's an actual break. In the middle of an ongoing race. I assume it's the same with other sports, which would be even worse, as racing can have really long lulls in action compared to other sports. Here (🇧🇷) we just get a side-by-side. We still get to see the action (or lack thereof) and they still get to show us ads. For sports with breaks eg football, besides a few side-by-side ads during the match, they do break, but only during the breaks.

I'd imagine Australia and NZ is similar to the US model

I don't know how long or bad they are, but I do know Taskmaster AU has like 6 segments compared to 4 on the OG. And I believe TM NZ has 5, but I could be wrong. Mind you, this is a 45-ish minute show without ads

cursive tiger
# timid ruin TV here in Europe was pretty regulated. There was typically an ad break every 30...

yeah we have similar regulations here, but the ad breaks sometimes have empty spaces if in your region specifically there aren't enough ads to air during that time, but this was the first i ever saw a completely empty ad break and it was right when some of the highest numbers of people watch

in terms of advertising we're not quite as good as the uk, but much better than the us and canada from what i've heard

we also don't anymore have tv licenses, which i think is probably negative overall but not a horrible thing

I'll be honest, I have no clue how TV currently works. I stopped watching telly when I was 12, so I'm very behind the technology, but mum loves watching rubbish shows and series, and she only ever signed up for Netflix apart from the TV service. My best educated guess is that there's a TV box you can plug into your modem, so it's technically also streaming, but it handles the mix of channels you pay for.

#

And then it all goes into a TV monitor or smart TV

#

But I'm pretty sure ads still work the same way

#

(oh yeah, just checked one of the mainstream channels, it's now working like Netflix; two packages, with or without ads and either monthly or yearly - I'd imagine tho that there are still packages via an internet provider's TV-box that collect several channels together for cheap with ads, so it's essentially retaining the feel of TV under the coat of streaming)

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but recently Hack Club, the non profit organization empowering teenagers to code around the world, got extorted by Salesforce.

We use Slack for our main source of communication, and Hack Club has negotiated a deal with Salesforce to pay $5,000 per year to use Slack. Everything has been perfectly fine for years now, and Salesforce had good relations with Hack Club. Last night, they told us if we don't pay $50,000 one-time plus $200,000 every year, our Slack workspace will be deactivated and all of our chat logs will be gone.

They gave us 5 days to figure out a solution. Large corporations like these need to be called out for their bullshit, and I'd love it if we can get this topic on the WAN show. This has been a huge headache for everybody working at Hack Club HQ; they've been working all night trying to export over a decade of chat logs and attachments. Not to mention you need to contact Salesforce directly to request a data export, so we've been needing to resort to other open-source tools to accomplish this.

Currently looking into getting a Mattermost self-hosted server up as a Slack alternative. If we can get this covered and call Salesforce out on their bullshit this Friday, maybe they'll learn not to mess with non-profit organizations like this!

Thank you!

#

What's bizarre to me is how they didn't give us any prior notice, not even a months warning. I'm hoping we'll be able to export all data before it's gone forever.

That’s strange, I did on my first one ever had problems starting the laptop but that was due to the hardrive having a bad boot sector and over time it destroyed itself. It was one of the first gen nvme

#

The cursor is the only issue I have, it’s slow but it’s because it’s not that powerful to begin with. Slow compared to today’s laptops

#

But fast enough to keep up with what I need I just need to be patient

timid ruin
#

And it didn't even manifest until after I installed my single PC version of Adobe and Office offline lifetime licenses llamaLikeThisI

#

(I mean, I installed a lot of my software, but I was waiting with those two so that I could activate the software keys once I'm sure everything is fine, and then a few days later it started having the booting issues llamaLikeThisI )

Wait are you running cs6 on windows 11?

#

I’ve heard some major windows issues because people installed that

tiny mauve

Obligatory reminder that it's right and just to pirate Adobe software.

#

And tbh, Office as well.

#

Licences should never be single PC, but single user, if "single" it must be

Aaaaaa

But nope

#

Just a standard Adobe Acrobat

plain aurora

A friend installed it and required to use a backup to go back to where it wasn't installed

timid ruin
#

Yeah, I got a local lifetime license which doesn't work with online features

#

So no Creative Cloud stuff

#

But Windows is fine

#

The issue I encounter happens before windows even has a chance to load

#

Right on the ROG welcome screen

#

Once the Windows logon screen appears, everything is good

#

But sometimes it takes a few restarts to get to the logon screen

# random trout I didn't know Adobe still sold those. Or maybe they do but just for Acrobat Stan...

So, Adobe last had perpetual licenses for Adobe Acrobat Standard and Pro 2020. These can still be found as existing codes from resellers (I got it via a Hungarian online market, where the actual retailer was Romanian). These are still legit, but obviously outdated for cloud stuff. I only need Acrobat for pdf creation/editing and some other basic stuff on a sporadic basis, so I didn't want an expensive subscription. This perpetual license was like $40 or so and it's working perfectly. However, this doesn't have any of the Creative Studio stuff, such as Photoshop.

#

Same with Office 2024, I only need it for Word and Excel, so I bought the perpetual license (which is the last one Microsoft will ever release)

#

It's basically all just still existing keys redistributed

To be fair, I don't mind software subscriptions for some types of software, but if I don't use all the features, the developer must offer a price point that makes sense for my limited needs. (I'm not paying for X subscription if it includes 20 major applications or features of which I only need 5. Have a subscription that gives me just the 5 I need or I won't be your customer.)

Tbh I miss 5.5 and 6. Those were great versions

# random trout To be fair, I don't mind software subscriptions for some types of software, but ...

Totally fair, I feel the same way. I use subscriptions for streaming services (I would even consider my Twitch channel-specific subs in this category), where a single-access license wouldn't make sense (the movie rental features very quickly can rack up costs, and you don't end up owning the media anyway), but for a software that currently knows the thing I need it for and I really don't need support/updates, I really do want the option to just hold a version locked license. I have the same for Snagit (I think 2021 maybe), and I love how I can just keep using it forever. All I'm forfeiting is the latest version upgrade option for every yearly version release, but honestly, how much upgrade do you need for a screen capture/basic editing software?

tiny mauve
#

keep using it forever with an asterisk, if it needs internet to be activated.

timid ruin
#

Snagit doesn't need internet activation as far as I can tell. The software key is tied to a version number, works like old software pre-internet.

#

Adobe needs internet or phone activation, so it is what it is. Probably Office was the same....

i get that they can't all stay forever but it is a shame to see so many people who've been with them for so long and helped to shape the channel in so many ways leave in such quick succession

timid ruin
#

I mean, if you've been with the same company for so long, I can see how there's only so far you can get without being either independent or trying something completely different. I feel like around your mid-30's it's a natural change, especially if you had a very good experience in such a nice but still pretty small company. If the environment inspires you to be more or be something different, it's not really a shame. I miss Alex for example, but it's great to see how he enjoys his own YT channel.

A source familiar with the events told me that Shopify’s pressure was both carrot and stick. Essentially, do what we ask and we’ll reward you with more funding, long-term financial stability. Don’t do this and you’ll never see a dollar of enterprise money again.

Hey everyone, I saw on one of the recent WANs a conversation about the new Microsoft launcher and lack of custom filters. Since then I made it my mission to implement in my app. This isnt a sales pitch or marketing as im in Beta testing. But finding like minded people is hard. If anyone wants to give it a try drop me a dm.

I’d love to share it more openly, but right now the project includes sensitive components like encryption/decryption logic and Home Assistant authentication handling. Until I can properly isolate or abstract those parts, I’m keeping it in a closed beta to avoid exposing any potential security risks.

Once it's cleaned up and safe to open-source, I’ll definitely consider putting it on GitHub for wider review. Appreciate the interest though and happy to share a beta copy directly if you're still curious to take a look!
