The problem for SteamOS is Still Nvidia.

Nvidia GPUs on Linux cannot A: handle big picture mode and B: do the instant sleep mode thing that the Steam Deck can do

This is similar to why Apple only used AMD for a long time during the Intel CPU era.

The only difference is that NVIDIA GPUs can't handle big picture mode and sleep power things on SteamOS, whereas macOS did support NVIDIA GPUs, but from what I remember, there might've been some sort of headache for both Apple and NVIDIA that was sorta kinda nasty enough for them to distance themselves throughout the 2010s as an OEM-included component.

Idk, I've been watching it for the last 4 - 5 years and it used to be much more structured. Shows were pretty regularly 1.5 - 2 hours, and 5 - 10 topics would be talked about.

Then merch messages got added, and shows grew up to 3 and sometimes 4 hours. With the latter 1/3 (sometimes 1/2) being merch messages. But 5 - 10 topics would still get talked about.

Now, shows are about 2 hours, maybe 2 topics get talked about, 2 others might get mentioned, some merch messages might be read, and for the other hour, it's just tangents.

Tangents used to be a nice personal break from the news, but now they're 75% of the show.

I know I am exaggerating the numbers a bit here, but that's what it feels like it's become.

10 years is REALLY good for a laptop, even a MacBook these days. Nothing wrong with continuing to use tech until it no longer does what you need, but eventually it's nice to get something fast / new again.

IKR?? The only repair it ever needed was a battery change (twice) and last time it was also cleaned out and had some of the thermo paste reapplied.

Oh and I needed to swap a key after around 3 years, because I splashed some port wine on the keyboard when it was brand new and the key was sticky....and one day it literally flew off but that was a user error.
It needs a Windows reinstall every once in a while. Honestly, it runs games I play at a satisfactory speed, and most software is fine, maybe Adobe is mildly slow in some cases. But it is getting slow enough that Firefox is often eating up the memory and probably the newest AAA games would not be compatible. After all, the GPU is an Nvidia 980 and I believe it has only 4GB memory?
But yeah, it is still perfect for a lot of work. It was my first ROG gear, and I really love it. I'm sure it will still be used for a few more years to come for like movies and stuff

I loved my first strix, 1060 with 16gb ram a nice i7 lived for 8 years, died of a hardware fault. Power supply inside the laptop broke. New Mobo, not worth replacing.

My battery died first after around 4 years and the replacement (still an original ASUS part) died sometime around the end of the COVID lockdowns. It is now running a noname battery without issues ever since. Each was about a 100 USD cost (plus another for the cleaning), but the laptop was originally 1200 GBP, so it was still worth the cost. Probably wouldn't be worth a third one, but who knows.

Oh I get it. Although I found that doing a cleaninstall every few years made a huge difference in speed. It's just a huge pain in the butt with all the software I'm using regularly, as naturally all licenses need to be entered again/accounts need logging in etc. Plus with the gear being old, I often need to install components that no longer install on their own, like the printer plugin or some of the firmware or ASUS ROG specific software that would otherwise install automatically.

But if you're doing freelancing work, you'd probably need an upgrade every 5 years for software to run at optimum speed

They've also been included in the VOD description for almost every episode since I want to say 2018, or potentially even earlier, thanks to a summer intern who went back through a significant chunk of the history and timestamped them all.... And then when NoKi's timestamps started to get popular, they started to become the community's "source of truth" for timestamps, hence why almost everyone who watches WAN knows who NoKi is

The easiest distro to use if you only want gaming is Bazzite. Steam OS still has some issues if you are using a desktop instead of a handheld.

And Steam OS does not work on systems with Nvidia GPUs

And Mint is great for newbies, my only issue with it is the default DE.

Ironically that's kinda the reason why I stopped dual booting and returned full time to windows. I updated the nvidia drivers on Ubuntu and, while I could login just fine via the terminal, I ended up in a login loop when trying to login with the GUI, except for the one time when I selected Wayland and it logged on for like 5 seconds then locked me out again, which then made me install every DE under the sun to try and get it working again, but I got nowhere...

Publishing of podcasts (not just WAN Show) to various platforms takes time. Sometimes this is because the creator needs to do something on their end. Sometimes it's part of the approval process of the platform. It'll be available on Spotify when it's available.

A few years ago I had an issue that required a re-install of Windows, and when I did it it totally required a new user to be created. I had to change the permissions on all existing folders to the new user, it was a serious PITA. If I recall correctly, it also wouldn't even let me use the existing user license and I had to obtain one of those grey market licenses to even install Windows.

Not sure whether you guys have government required MFA apps, but I currently am forced to use 2 (one for Denmark and one for Hungary), which are very specific government developed apps, that only work for specific things, but these things also only work with these MFA apps. And on top of it everyone definitely needs at least one MFA for their tech space, and I also have the Microsoft MFA on my work phone for my work account stuff. So I'm at 4 MFA apps, which number is impossible to shrink further down...and I'm really glad that so far none of my apps forced me to use an app other than Authy (which is the app I chose to run with for personal device authentication).

Yeah Slack has got loads of strong points but it’s so expensive! It would cost my org £250,000 a year just for Slack - and that’s not even on the Enterprise edition (which we should be using). I just can’t justify the cost in any way. But I see so many tech companies using it (we fit into that category).

Google Chat has actually become pretty good. It’s still lacking on integrations but as a chat platform I’m quite impressed by it now. Especially as it’s native to Google Workspace, and the integrations to the wider Google tooling is excellent (better than Slack)

Well, I mean, 4 apps Vs 4 passkeys, and passkeys would likely cost money. Now, for a person with a stable income it's ok, but a retired person would have an even harder time managing costs on that piece of hardware (and probably most countries would charge for it just like charging for a driver's license, ID, passport etc). And say, the old person's kid could help with logging in remotely in some cases, with passkeys it would be impossible (let's say there's something that's high urgency and the child with the passkey is abroad). It's also something that's easily lost, I know my mother would loose it in 4 minutes (whereas she has no problem using an app).
So if it's an option, sure, could be good for some people, but it's still 4 passkeys to replace the 4 applications. The main issue is still the need for using something for each situation. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with this, but the original topic was how it is so annoying to have more than 1 MFA apps.

Fair, for a technical person it is very convenient. For a non-tech one, it's very unlikely that they even use a PW manager (even Google or Firefox PW manager, let alone a secure local one). And government MFA will be used by everyone or nearly everyone, which is the main issue here.

Yeah the Danish state app is great as well. The Hungarian one is quite okay. In general, all EU member countries have to have some kind of government authenticator set up by the end of 2025, and these tend to be pretty good. But every country uses their own app, some more widely (in Denmark EVERYTHING is tied to your MFA), some to a very limited degree (in Hungary only government processes are tied to it like healthcare, tax and government sites). All of which are independent from other infra authenticators (fxp Windows will always tie to its own, at least in a company setting), and more independent authenticators (such as Authy which I chose to use). I find all 4 are good for their original purpose, but it's still 4 different apps I have to take care of (but luckily Microsoft MFA is on the work phone so I can technically ignore that one for most of my life)

I think the bigger reason is the last several both, or especially Luke, has had reasons he has to leave around a specific times.. like when his birds were sick.. Cause it was still late a lot after the incident.. then theres been one or the other having to catch planes, having after-wan events to get too, Dan needing to be out by a specific time, etc.. The Luke thing probably forced them to be better at managing their time though cause that was a few months where he had to be home every day by a set time..

Nope. Only one of my credit card issuers do, and even then, it's not like I can generate a new number per vendor - I can just change the SINGLE temporary number for the whole account.

And as someone that has had their number stolen from a restaurant, it's a minor inconvenience. Your bank's fraud department calls you, you confirm the charge is fraudulent and you get mailed a new card.

And then I don't have a CC whilst I wait 1-4 business weeks for the replacement card. Tis why I also carry cash.

Also, did you find out how your card number was stolen? Was there a skimmer on the payment terminal or...?

It's less than 5 business days. Well was before USPS went to shit.

Not where I live in Canada. 😛 Finance related lettermail takes anywhere from 1-4 business weeks here, and I'm only 5 minutes from a city with 100,000 people. Replacing any kind of card (ID, CC, etc.) is a big pain.

The particular card had only been used in person at a couple of restaurants. A waiter must have copied the number down, the passed it off to organized criminals that encoded on a new card. They used the card in a different state, so triggered the fraud department.

Ah, righto, see I'm not legally allowed to let either of my cards out of my sight or physical possession. Says so right in the cardholder agreement. It's part of my legally required duty to protect the card from fraudulent use.

I wonder how that would work if I visited a country where it's "normal" for your card to be taken out of your sight for payment... would make it rather difficult for me to pay by card I'd imagine.

Only recently has Chip readers gotten ubiquitous.

Many restaurants now bring the card reader to the table. Just because the scam was so common.

It may, but that would be more effort than just logging into Paypal.. and given my history with Canadian Banks, I actually trust Paypals security more than the banks webportal :p

Wasn't that long ago that my bank used to trim any password to 6 characters, AND make it case insensitive.. 😐

Also Paypay has much more incentive to not get hacked than most other sites selling stuff.. so they are a risk I'm willing to take.. Hell even Steam, I use paypal, and set it to not remember my paypal account.. so its an extra click each time, but my data isn't there if someone gets in..

Fewer points of failure.. its not perfect, but its still safer 🙂

Off the top of my head I think only Apple, Amazon, and Paypal have my CC info saved..

They've (mostly) smartened up since then, but heckin heck - finance and insurance are TWO industries that I want to be years ahead of others when it comes to account security.
